At 8:05, blacksmithing has always been a specialized trade. Most 9th Century Saxons had minimal blacksmithing skills. I am a boomer. I had compulsory industrial arts classes. Everyone had to make a fireplace poker by hammering a piece of steel into the right shape. None of us could shoe a horse, but we could all make nails, which was the most that anyone could expect from the average 9th Century Saxon, so everyone I went to school with had blacksmithing skills that most 9th Century Saxons would respect.
