Meltdown - The Tragic End of Mr. Freeze (Batman Beyond)

What is the measure of a villain? Does someone as cold as Mr. Freeze ever deserve a second chance at life? Or should he be seen in suspicion?

Meltdown is fucking brutal. After all those years, Victor is finally, _finally_ given a chance to live a normal life, and even though Nora'a passed on, he's able to find love again, and a chance to atone despite his past... and then it turns out said love was just using him and tried to _kill_ him, causing him to get pissed, get out his old suit and kill the bitch, then ends up trying to blow up the whole facility that used him. When Terry tries to reason with him, Powers, now having become Blight, makes things worse, leading Victor to decide to commit suicide while Terry can get out okay. The part of "Farewells" that plays during his death scene is _haunting,_ and his final line... "Believe me... you're the only one who cares..." In the end, both Bruce and Terry were right: Bruce was right about Victor snapping and going Mr. Freeze on everyone, and Terry was right about Victor wanting to atone and choosing to do the right thing, even if it cost him his life to make sure someone like Batman, his biggest obstacle, even if it's a successor, can keep living. It's a wonderful episode, and a testament to the great writing of Batman Beyond.

The fact that he wanted to seek redemption for his past is proof enough that Victor Fries was worthy of a second chance. The issue was that factors beyond his control forces him to regress to his previous villainous behavior. And that's why Fries decided to end it all, so that no one else will suffer by his hands again, because he figured he was too far gone this time.

One of the most tragic characters that makes everyone feel bad for him , sometimes were actually rooting for them so they can get some what of a happy ending only to shed tiers when you see this characters final moments broken and alone fated to this horrible end.

"And behold I shall become a Blight upon the land and everything I TOUCH Shall Wither and Die!" I LOVE That line. It's darkly poetic and shows that Powers is likely having an absolute ball just cutting loose with his powers. Makes it a shame Blight only appears in like three episodes despite being Terry's main enemy.

It’s funny because in season 2 of BTAS, some of the episodes primarily focused on giving second chances to the villains. But just like Mr.Freeze in Meltdown, it was either because of their mental state or because they were betrayed by a third party. I love these two shows whether they’re for kids or not.

I remember Penguin trying to go straight and tried to get into high society. But a socialite he got friendly with decided it'd be a good story to be seen with a former villain, and when he found out she was simply using him he got incredibly upset. "Oswald, if it's money you want, I can get you more..." "SHUT Up! All I wanted from you, dearie, was a little friendship. [Sadly] That would have cost you nothing."

"Meltdown" is also one of my favorite episodes from Batman Beyond because of how it concludes with the DCAU Mr. Freeze. Freeze is, as I see him, one of the very few characters who could be open to redemption though it would depend on certain situations like if Nora Fries was captured or is in harm's way that he'd go through any lengths to save her as an example.

It's sad how the guy with the most noble or understandable reason to become a villain ends up getting one shitty hand dealt after another, and in the end, dies alone and miserable. Least in Arkham Knight he died with Nora.

Batman Beyond was fantastic. It was early on Saturday morning and my insomnia ensured I'd always watch it. This episode in particular was always one in my mind, especially Victor's final words. Also, it shows the fundamental psychological differences between Terry and Bruce. Bruce feels he's always alone because any connection he tried to establish backfired, partially because he was hesitant to make them in the first place. Terry still has his family, friends, girlfriend, and a even a confidant at school who knows his secret. He values his connections and relies on them, despite the risk. He's willing to give people chances, while Bruce isn't, and after everything he's been through, I don't blame him.

I believe redemption is a chance that should be given, but I don't think that means the people they hurt are obligated to forgive them. It's a hard path, trying to make things right after so much cruelty, but everyone should be allowed to try.

I think that he should have been given a second chance because he was going to use his time trying to amend what was left of what he'd targeted. He was older, he'd served time, his story was tragic to begin with, and he ended up deciding to use his return as Mr. Freeze the human weapon to stop evil on its own.

Can we all agree that Batman Beyond was an amazing show that was way ahead of its time and is more than deserving of standing beside the original Batman Animated series as a worthy addition to the Batman Mythos? I mean they just don't make shows this good or positively memorable anymore. But then again many Television executives quality standards have gone down the toilet as far as I can tell.

I legitimately enjoyed this video: this is not just something personal from you, MangaKamen, but it is explorative and thought provocative. I would truly want to see redemption come to tragic villains, but it is a sad reality for certain characters that they cannot escape their ordeal, or the story risks losing them for their role. Of course there are plenty of exceptions, and my perspective may be wrong. By all means, I'd welcome nuance from my standpoint. That said, I'd love to see more content like this in the future!

Thanks to the context of the episode, I do see that change being worth a fair shot at redemption. Despite it ending poorly and leading back to the villain he was, he was a nice guy that looked like the man before the villain. No universal answer to this if we go down to specific interpretations but to me, great heroes would give chances often.

This was a great episode from a great series and I look forward to more like this. As for the question about redemption. I do believe that we all deserve a chance at redemption. But the thing that I like about this episode is that it also shows that even though you may want to make a new like fir yourself that doesn’t erase the damage you’ve done or that the people that you’ve hurt in the past have to forgive you. And that the most you can do is to make amends the best way you can. The only problem with Freezes redemption was that he was betrayed by the people he thought he could trust and who were trying to kill him. So he was forced by factors beyond his control. In a way I believe both Terry and Bruce were right. Hope for the best in people, but prepare for the worst.

Masterful breakdown of a really touching episode. A big part of the reason the show isn't talked about more, in my eyes, is because a lot of the comic continuations have been of substantially lower quality. Thus, people in the comic sphere have the memory tainted by the modern takes, and people who only follow the shows...well the ratings weren't as good as BTAS and justice league.

Another episode of Batman beyond I really think that needs a deep dive look into. Is the one where Terry has to infiltrate a juvenile hall prison system. Because I think a lot of stuff that happens in that episode is surprisingly dark and chilling. I mean one of the kids literally get sent there because she writes a school paper article about how horrible the places. The school thinks of this as problematic , And because of new laws put in place that will punish parents for kids actions. Her dad just throw her away into the juvenile hall facility. And I will always remember how the episode ends where she just walks up, glares at her dad, and just walks away because he obviously just pissed away any chance of her giving a shit about him anymore.

To me, Mr. Freeze will be one of the best written characters. I watched this episode later in life, only in few chunks. 4:21 Hey, I learned that from you. I won’t get ahead of myself but thur out it made me cry. Freeze is a man underneath that ice cold suit. He had a heart beating without a real body. Batman care about this villians, that is pretty touching, in most media people would go all out and kill but to see him go out his way show he more than brute he has a heart. The end faked me out, I thought he would be a main stay and be with Old Man Bruce too but to see his demise was sad. For me I say give the second chance and keep a watchful eye, if people seem to slip up try to help out before they revert comply back to be something worse. I been in Freeze situation before and in Terry shoes, and all it takes is a extension of warm hand to get through cold time. Happy Holiday. Keep up the good work and don’t mind episode to highlight a character moment. The moment that makes a character that beating heart. ------------------- *Lillie takes notes on how to beat batman from Misty* Ice attacks. Never knew the batwing and his gears own weakness. "Believe me... you're the only one who cares." That line says so much about Mr. Freeze's relationship with Batman. In general, whether it be Bruce, Terry, or another under the cowl, Batman has always been sympathetic about Freeze's position, legitimately wanting the latter to perform. However, due to inner rage and actions of another bastard or villian, Mr. Freeze was never able to reform, even though all he wanted was just to be with beloved wife and live as any normal man and likely would have taken the oppotunity if given the chance. When Fries says that line, you can tell how much Freeze given up by rejecting the hand on the one person who has constantly try to help him. The saving grace to Mr. Freeze's end is how he spent his last moments: saving Batman by forcing him to leave him behind.

Also him choosing to take his own life in the first place goes to show how much he's afraid of becoming who he was before. He knew full well he never deserved a second chance but in his perspective, getting a chance at a new life is something that should be a right, not a privilege. I agree with every part of that. Him rejecting Batman wasn't just about them being the only ones who cared, it was also about the chance that the processes could fail, just like how the cloning failed and he didn't want it to fail because he didn't want to be that person again. It's probably why he refused Bruce's hand in the first place, knowing that even if Batman saved Nora, there was still a chance it wouldn't work on him and he didn't want that, knowing the path he was on was wrong and the process failing would leave him on that path. I don't know why he let Batman save Nora though, he knew full well she could wind up on the same path as him if it didn't work.

I did enjoy the episode explanation of one of my favorite series. However, I do believe the reason it wasnt really received as well was due to pacing and the tone that was selected. This did feel like a more "episode breakdown" episode rather than a "Series breakdown" episode. I do think that this style of series does need abit more work, but that would require you to kind of test and fail without falling to negativity. (Came here from Twitter because I genuinely love Batman Beyond and do want to see you continue this series, but it will have downs since it isnt your normal content)

The thing about giving someone a second chance is that trying to just sweep everything under the rug and pretend like it never happened is the wrong way to go about it. Think of it sort of like helping someone to get over addiction. Having the potential to be a certain way should be a part of how you interact with them - you don't invite an ex-alcoholic to go to a bar even if they've been dry for years not just because it might tempt them but also because even if it doesn't it's simply rude. When someone has already shown to be untrustworthy, having your guard up around them is only natural. To quote the manga "Liar Game": "People SHOULD be doubted. Many people misunderstand this concept. Doubting people is simply a part of trying to get to know them. 'Trust.' That act is without a doubt a very noble one... But you know, what many people do, that they call 'trust,' is actually giving up on trying to understand others. And that has nothing to do with 'trust,' but is rather... Apathy."

3:32 Terry, even broke the Bat Signal and he said *next time use e-mail.* 4:45 oh my god, I remember Ra’s Al Ghul did that Conscience clone thing into his own daughter. 5:54 it’s true that Nora backstory basically gave Mr.Freeze an iconic identity. He just a simple one dimensional villain before the animated series. But Freeze from 2004 Batman has the best design, fight me. 8:41 I wish Harley Quinn is more like this *(Edit:* Though in the 1st Batman animated technicality already did before Harley relapse). She help Joker to kidnap and Experiment on Tim Drake in this continuity. I wonder Harley’s Granddaughters are related to Joker? Heck in Injustice universe they ignore that Harley help Joker Committing Genocide Metropolis including Lois and her unborn child. Batman is like, yeah I’ll ignore what Harley has done focus on Dictator Superman. Not saying Ignore Dictator Superman’s action. But still Batman still ally with someone who cause all this. Seriously, Harley Quinn in Injustice deserve prison along with Superman. 10:04 He literally said he doesn’t call himself Bruce in his thoughts. He calls himself Batman. Terry said that’s my name now. Bruce said yeah sure. Seriously and no one thinks Bruce Wayne is the mask? 11:58 I meant to say this in your Miles Morales video. I thought you don’t read comics. You said that in Tiger & Bunny video. I believe Mister Freeze should have his second chance of redemption. It gonna be a tough path to get redemption but you keep moving forward. When I asked why they decided to invite me to a gaming MCN in particular when my channel has never focused on video games, they refused to respond. If it wasn't for that I would have accepted because they clearly didn't care if I made non-gaming content (and the one I actually got any response at all straight up told me as much). It still bugs me though because I still don't get why that was a thing or why it was only ever gaming MCNs. It was probably because that shakycam recording of a battle recorder video of a Level 1 Starly doing a FEAR strategy on a level 100 Arceus being my most viewed video at the time but if that's true, why couldn't they have just said as much?

I say redemption. Victor can never make his past go away, but he chose to live with that weight. And say he truly did get a second chance to make things right. It's the actions he commits to that show the growth of his old self to his new self, and honestly, Victor deserves a chance to be happy and make things right from his past. It's what we choose to do with the lives we're given.

It’s extremely sad, because he was on the fast track to redemption, a second chance at life, but factors outside his control and the awful other villains who wouldn’t try again made him regress to his vengefulness as a villain. “Believe me, you’re the only one who cares.”

I Honestly can Resonate with and Relate to Victor, I Was Once like him, Grieving from the Loss of his Loved One named Nora Which He Tried Everything to Save the Loved One he was Losing, Even Resorting to Uncivil Methods to Save the the One He Loves Which Lead to Him heading to a Dark Path where He gets Engulfed with Bitterness, Irrational Behaviour, Nihilism, Etc. And He Had to Let go of the Past and Healed from his Past and Paid Retributions to His Sins and Past Crimes. And He asked for Forgiveness to His Victims, That's why He is so Human to Us. We Need MORE shows like this. We Need Shows with THOSE THEMES, And Today No thanks to Corporate Greed/Incompetence, Parental Self-Righteousness, Child OverProtection and Other Factors, We NEED THESE Kind of Shows! WE NEED Shows that Show the Very Humanity in Those Topics, We Can't run Away from it!, WE NEED IT!

Given that Freeze's relapse was a direct response to being betrayed and almost murdered, yeah he specifically "deserved" the second chance Powers gave and then stole from him.

Honestly Bruce is a lot warmer of a character than people are willing to admit, even at his most cynical he's got a big heart that cares. It's kind of shows in this episode at the end when he tells Terry they were both right. That's an issue I have with BvS, man just wanted to kill Superman and not even kind of humor him being not bad. (Another related issue is Ben was 44 at the time, and I personally feel like that was to young for him going hyper cynical. Even considering Miller's Bruce being 55 in "The Dark Knight Returns". That's just me.)

I remember in the time I watched the episode "Meltdown" back when Batman beyond used to be on Netflix so many years ago, I didn't understand what was going on, I didn't know what things people would say, I didn't feel that much of emotions for whatever I saw from whatever movie and TV show I watched, and I didn't understand that much of things from stories of Batman, but now I do, and since I'm 18 years old and smarter right now, and I know everything from every story of Batman, and I can see how hard it was for Mr. Freeze trying to live a normal life while some people wouldn't except on him being a changed man and still see and fear him as the monster they used to find him as, and while most of Batman's enemies wouldn't get second chances because of how they love being who they are that's psychotic, and killing monsters, and getting payback on the ones who made them be who they are and stuff like that, Mr. Freeze is like the only villain who would understand things and wouldn't want to harm anyone unless he wanted to or because of someone forcing him on doing terrible things and stuff like that, and I guess it is kind of sad of how Mr. Freeze sacrificed himself and left Terry to live.

I think there is a sadness that Bruce does not give a second chance to Mr. Freezd-after giving sympathy to Harly Quin and even the Penguin after he realized the poor Penguin got manipulated. But Freeze? Freeze used up his chances with Bruce-but not Terry.

As a Christian, I believe everyone deserves a second chance, and even a third or fourth, depending. But, as with everything, it all depends on the person. There are some people who will never reform, even if they seem sincere. So it is best to follow the principle of "trust, but verify".

Victor freeze is the Peter Parker of Batman villains. He's the only villain deserving of a happy ending that will never come. His true goals from the very beginning were of love, even if he hid them behind a heart of ice. Victor freeze perfectly Encapsulates the idea of tragedy. He is essentially the end of Romeo and Juliet where nobody wins. I do wish that DC would give him a true final send off but rock steady is probably never going to do that, especially since their partnered with sweet baby. All I expect is more disrespect of his character. True story though. My last name actually is freeze as well so I've always had a special place in my heart for Victor freeze, especially since I have had many tragedies involving love. So I think I understand his character very well. No joke though. I also look like him Before the accident.

You know, Kamen, something i clearly miss are channels that talk about older shows and what makes them so great. Most channels are only negative, crying about "This is bad! and That is woke!" all the time to the point it becomes superfluous. As such i really appreciate this video and would actually like to see more of that.

Did Victor _deserve_ a second chance? Absolutely not and that's not even debatable, even he knew this himself but chose to not think on it until the very end where he chose taking his own life over going back down the path he walked before because he was _afraid_ of becoming that person again (it's something I personally know too well because I have my own past I'm not proud of). The question instead should be: _Should_ he get one? And my answer to that is yes. A chance at a new life should be a _right,_ not a privilege. That's just my perspective though and I know a lot of people wouldn't agree with it.
