When my dad was in high school, I'm 52, he made a 2 piece plaster mold. He then painted it and cast parts from wax. He then made a 1 piece mold with plaster from the wax piece. He then took the mold to his metals shop in school and poured molten aluminum into it. He never tried to remove the wax, just poured over it and it burnt out with metal replacing. Hid it before teacher seen and let it cool. He would just break the mold away, remove the sprew, and sanded it. I seen 1 pair of the brass (aluminum) nucks he cast in school.

Hey I been bouncing around on KZread looking for ideas on my project. Your idea is beautiful. I would also like to suggest the vacuum former method. Basically, all you need is a box to stick a vacuum in, with a mesh top. You sit your model on top of that mesh. Then you create a frame/border to hold a PVC sheet with, above a stove or some heat source hot enough until the plastic start sagging. Then you can quickly set that heated plastic sheet on top of the model and create an accurate mold of the model. I hope this helps someone.

Concrete, cool, I would try to make it a little finer, though. I have thought of using plaster of paris, but I think it will be too fragile. I have been wanting to make clothespins from recycled plastic since the ones you can buy are either wood or really cheap thin plastic that busts apart in the sun in a year or less. I think this could work. I may have to grind the slots for the springs with a dremel, or just saw or file. Concrete wouldn't support really fine bit of the slot, but otherwise, clothespins are pretty basic. I can use wood ones for a model and use the springs on the new recycled plastic ones. I have some ancient plastic ones I might want to use for models, too. Save all my old springs and make new clothespins!

what I do is on the stove with a spare butter knife to give things shape and push them together, maybe gripper, and elses (usually harder and higher melting point) to push it against and cast its shape on it. allows me to be more liberal and it’s quite fun also, modify the stove: if possible, instead of the lid thingy, alluminum foil piece to concentrate the gas into one stream its so sad that, unless blue flame you’d get the soot on it :((

@@selfentertained1932 yes...I do realize the final plastic part has to be detailed. What i'm also pointing out is that the inner sides/walls of the concrete mold are harder to reach with whatever tool you use/need to make them smoother.I find it way easier to approach/look at a piece of material from the outside. So when your plastic piece has been kicked out of the mold, 1st ,it is lighter than concrete to handle, 2nd, plastic is easier to shape than rock. a dremel rotary tool would work great for that... Pretty neat the way you started with a piece of paper, then cardboard, then wood,to end up with concrete..thumbs up..

Just use fiberglass or carbon fiber. The stuff is cheap and EASY! Both are available in cloth and you cover your foam shape with layers of whichever fiber you desire. It will be FAR stronger and look much better. You can learn to use a vacuum bag to get the air out. It is way better than this method.
