I love your melanie reactions you guys always see further to the meaning than most people and I think that's amazing!! it's crazy how her music and videos have a lot of layers and people seem to not get them at the first but y'all do. she wrote this song as an "advice" to young people to get what they want in their relationships and nothing less. also the lyric where she says "step seven: this one goes to eleven" references to the track 11 on the cry baby album "pacify her" where the boyfriend cheats on his girlfriend. and last, the only feature she has it's a song called "copy cat", its funny cause it's like how you said, she wanted someone with her same style for that track and that's why she featured Tierra.

Also her tours are usually very theatrical, I went to the K-12 tour and it's really focused on theatrical performance, signing and dancing. It was a complete experience

I think the song is playing off how in highschool ideas of relationships during that time are just so intense. You think your first bf/gf is who are going to marry, you can easily be pressured into giving up your virginity to keep a relationship, fight and make excuses to keep unhealthy partners just because " you love them so much", hormones make everything so dramatic like it's life or death. Sounds like Melanie is saying, if you can't handle this intense kind of relationship, I don't want you.
