I remember back in the day thinking to myself that these ladies were going to be in it for long run cause every song they released was a massive smash and everyone just loved them. Especially as edgier/harder dance music was starting to develop as the 90s rolled over and these 2 would have been able to pull those newer sounds off convincingly. If only we lived in an alternative timeline and Mel is still with us. How amazing would that be with all the future Mel & Kim albums to enjoy. Even after all these years her passing is still deeply upsetting. I miss her terribly.

Haha, Stock/Aitken/Waterman, whom we loved to ridicule and TRASH all throughout the 90's, how's it looking now? We can only pray that they would forgive us and go to work again, that we could have anything even close to music as listenable and enjoyable as this.

@days2NiGHTS2days Glad you like the video, but I didn't actually put it together - it's the official 2nd video for the song. It was the only video that aired on TV for the single in Australia. I guess the record company realised people wanted to see Mel & Kim in the video instead of the dancers, and had the sense to put this together.

@Kenta19191919 The dance on the stage is from their 1987 Montreux Jazz Festival performance of 'FLM'. I know Mel & Kim did their own choreography for the 'Showing Out' video, but had a choreographer for the 'Respectable' video. Not sure if they choreographed the 'FLM' dance themselves or had a choreographer.

The other official video features footage of dancers, without Mel & Kim.

@@MelAndKimVideos Thanks for all the info. I think the original poster was just making the point that sadly Mel's terminal cancer was by this time too advanced for her to contribute to making a video for this single. Tragic she would die at just 23 from such a rare cancer - the odds against it were massive. She was a shooting star who burned out much too quickly - but boy did she shine brightly! God bless you Mel.

Maybe my favourite SAW track. Does anybody know how this track came about, as it wasn't originally on the FLM album, so guessing it was recorded after Mel became ill. Also, does anyone know if the footage of FLM live at Montreux Jazz Festival is online anywhere in high quality. (I know there's a version on KZread but it looks quite grainy.)

To my knowledge, going from memory after reading Phil Harding's 'From the Factory Floor' book, 'That's the Way It Is' was recorded over two sessions, in October 1987 and January 1988. Initially, Kim laid down a vocal take, as Mel was too ill then, and Mel later came in and did her bit (or they re-recorded the vocals together). I think the song came about as a way of keeping Mel's spirits up/giving her something else to focus on other than her health issues. I think they also put the song out there as a way of giving the impression that Mel was 'fine'/to take some heat out of the media speculation - they didn't admit that Mel had cancer until after its release. There was a concocted story for why they don't appear in the (original) video, about the tape going missing/accidentally being destroyed (except for the footage of the dancers). I'm not sure how 'You Changed My Life', which the girls co-wrote, came about, though, or when it was recorded - but presumably it was done during the same sessions. As for HQ footage of the Montreux performances - I don't know if they're available in pristine condition anywhere, sorry.

@ZitkalaNoni Actually this isn't a tribute video, it's an official video for the song. There were 2 videos for 'That's the Way It Is' - one with the dancers (version 1), and this one (version 2) which used footage from their other videos and a live performance.

Mel + Kim aside, and they were gorgeous in every way, but people refuse to see a bigger picture regarding the very Stock Aitken & Waterman. SAW were not that different then (logistically so, if that's the proper word to put it) from the unbearable auto-tune crap we witness today. Of course, the times were a bit more "innocent" and pop trends in the (late) 80s were far more ear-pleasing, especially due to underground music that was constantly invading the pop charts, yes - but SAW were disliked and ridiculed with a reason. Because once they produced an ace pop song (of course, that being "You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)"), it all went downhill from there as they were audibly exploiting talent, adapting it to their instant, massive money making hit machine. Basically what they did back then is what people like Simon Cowells of today are doing for the last 20+ years with countless "X Factors", "BGT's" and "American Idols" (and there is a history of Mr. Cowell himself constantly knocking around SAW's door back in those days, Sinitta was his protegé at the time)... SAW very quickly became a monster franchise and that's how their songs continue to sound like. Now Bananarama, Kylie, Sinitta, Rick Astley, Jason Donovan or Sonia to name the very top few, may have sounded vocally distinctive between them and had great fun living a pop dream but at the same time what SAW produced for them was cut from one and the same cloth, over and over again. Yes, SAW's dance beats were irresistible and some of the songs remain classics, but every next one they released at the height of their chart reign (and this I mean in the worst sense of the word) became even more stupefyingly schmaltzy. It got to the point where we couldn't get away from SAW even if we wanted to, hearing them on the radio or TV, and it was just plain nauseous. At some point, even some of the mentioned people above probably realised the brainwashing SAW cloud above their heads did them more harm than good, regardless of their individual taste of success.

  • @MelAndKimVideos

SAW were very different to Simon Cowell - they (well, Pete wasn't) were actual songwriters/musicians, unlike him, with real musical talent. Pete's talents were more on the marketing/managing/artist liaison side. Although they used the best studio wizardry available at the time, I disagree that it was like today's ubiquitous autotune. They worked with some vocalists who could barely sing, and their vocal limitations (hello Jason Donovan) are obvious when you listen to their songs - unlike autotune, where everyone sounds interchangeable and not even human at times/it could be a robot, you can still tell that there's a human singing the SAW tracks, even if they are buried in backing vocals. Unlike Simon Cowell, SAW were not just seeking a quick buck above everything else, using disposable artists - they stuck with artists who had flop after flop (e.g. Hazell Dean), and took time to develop artists such as Rick Astley (who they hired as a tea boy before launching his career, to get him used to/comfortable with working in the studio). When did Simon Cowell ever do anything like that? While I'll concede that SAW's music became formulaic, they were capable of producing diverse styles, although they are never given credit for this. If you listen to e.g. Canton's 'Stay With Me', Brilliant's 'Love Is War', Princess's 'I'll Keep On Loving You', or Lonnie Gordon's 'Beyond Your Wildest Dreams', they sound nothing like the SAW formula sound. In the end, they stuck with what sold. SAW's undoing was that they saturated the market in 1989. Their downfall was inevitable after that. They also lost a lot of credibility through working with artists such as Kylie and Jason.
