Mekong River Dolphins and People: Shared River, Shared Future

The iconic Irrawaddy dolphin was once plentiful in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam, but was decimated during the region's turbulent recent past. Now threatened by fishing nets and proposed hydropower dams, the species is on the verge of extinction in the Mekong. With fewer than 100 dolphins remaining in the river, the Cambodian government has banned the use of gillnets to prevent the accidental catching of dolphins. Gillnet use is potentially destructive to both fish and dolphins. Restrictions on gillnet use however, can create hardships for the people who use gillnets to feed their family and make a living. To support these people, WWF has partnered with local government and development agencies to provide education and alternative livelihood opportunities in communities along the Mekong to mitigate these hardships and gain support to save the Mekong's critically endangered dolphins.

it's really sad to see a lot of species are disappearing in Mekong area. I'm from there and I feel ashamed when watching the video.

My parents worked with WWF before. They are environmental conservationists. They taught me about sustainable development and well balanced ecological system. I seeing it different from WWF here I think it is essential to build the future of kong river owners in ASEAN countries. We need to manage the river in cooperation with China This can be an engineering ambassador pioneer project China already did build dams up river And the rest river flows through a few ASEAN countries If we do not manage It will be China that manages the whole river for its own benefits Heaven knows how clever they are And I actually care for pink dolphins and that big fish equivalent to the salt water whales. If the engineers try to think thoroughly and include the environmental conservation aspect into the building process They will be able to conserve the fish Via maega dam projects And The fish will not extinct
