But,remember war wasn’t exclusive to the ottomans, the Roman Empire took Jerusalem from the Jews, then again via the crusades who took it from Muslims in 1099. The very same things you’ve mentioned happened to the Jews first then the Muslims. There is much of history we need to consider and so much we will not know. We cannot determine who is wrong and who is right because we don’t know the truth. One can argue the wars waged were defensive, while another can argue it as exbantionist. We will never know. What I do know that war should be defensive in nature, and religion shouldn’t be forced and culture should be protected. Many ethical and religious traditions, including Islam agree with this. Even though the islamic or Christian empires may have not followed it, you cannot somehow conflate that into the religion. Religion is clear, war is defensive and religion cannot be forced and cultures are protected. Using your logic even Christianity can also be considered as a religion of war if we are to judge on the basis of verse 24 in Mathew chapter 10, which attributes to Jesus (peace be upon him) that he said “Do not think that I came to cast peace on earth. I did not come to cast peace but rather a sword.”…..if you’ve misunderstood then that’s on you.And the empires colonising others hasn’t ended still today, if you think it has then you have been fooled.

In terms of achievements, Mehmed was better than the timur, where Mehmed conquered Constantinople, conquered the combined European troops in a crusade that lasted many years, while Ataturk was not superior because he had the support of another country, namely the Soviet Union, in contrast to Mehmed who did it with his own strength.
