Yeah! I don't know anything about game code, but I'm surprised by this as well, especially since the first salvo that kills fake zero aren't "real"

Alternatively, hit detection is disabled during cutscenes. Notice how the first shot at 1:13 doesn't hit X while Sigma is still on-screen. Those are, indeed, the projectiles used in the battle against Zero.

Something to do with the Dragon Punch. EDIT: Appartently I knocked the shell out of the playable area.

It can't be done under normal circumstances. There is a cheat that will enable the shorter you can to be done at any degree of HP that can be entered through a cheat device like a game genie.
