    It's probably worth pointing out that the Quick Boomerangs are able to damage EVERY generic enemy in the game. One of the Wily Stages has a big fish that jumps out of a pit. It's meant to be immune to everything, but the Quick Boomerangs kill it outright.

    Yeah, it's easy to tell where the game gets "Nintendo Hard" and how this can easily be attributed to lack of polish and balance testing. However, it still became the most iconic "Classic" Mega Man title, to the point where so much of Mega Man's moveset and soundtrack points to this game in the Smash Bros series. I don't think that, after talking about the mechanics of the game itself, enough was said about how these mechanics and changes, ended up influencing the series moving forward.

  • @Brawler_1337

    @Brawler_1337

    3 жыл бұрын

    On the notion of Nintendo Hard, it’s also worth bearing in mind that the age of the NES was a very different time for video games. The 80s marked the heyday of the video arcade, where players would pay quarter upon quarter to play their favorite games. Now think about designing an arcade game. Do you want it to be relatively easy-going for the player to complete? No; you want it to be hard and sometimes a bit unfair so that players will spend more quarters getting better and trying to beat the game. An arcade game isn’t an experience to complete, but rather an opponent to defeat. This also complements the social atmosphere of the arcade well since you can brag to everyone when you finally are able to beat a game or get the high score. It’s an achievement worth celebrating. Obviously, home consoles are a different beast. They don’t require money to play once you own the system and games, and you’re probably going to play them alone or with a few friends you have over your house. Despite this, many 8-bit games were still designed as if they were arcade titles. They’re relatively short, hard as hell, and limit your lives and continues. Hell, some still kept a score even though high scores aren’t much of a bragging right if your copy of the game isn’t public to prove you got that score. These aren’t design flaws; they’re just what gamers expected in the 80s. It was also what game designers knew how to do, because most of them probably worked on arcade games as well. It wasn’t really until the 16-bit era that game designers realized the strengths of the home console and started tailoring games toward them. Now games could be encouraging to the player, presenting enough difficulty to be engaging but not so much that the player will get frustrated and quit. Games got longer, continues were no longer limited or locked behind a code, and scores were no longer important. Game were no longer your opponent. I think I’ve rambled a bit, but my point is that Nintendo Hard sections of 8-bit games were likely intentional because that’s how an arcade game would do things.

    Hard? This is one of the easier Mega Man games. Like most of the NES games, it was designed to be rented, and won in one or two weekends. In general, you could usually learn the weaknesses through trial and error in about that much time with most Mega Man games. It's somewhere around 48 attempts max to learn the best path through the game, and then just a matter of pulling it off. This one is easier, because most of the weaknesses are super effective. Mega Man 4 and 6 are the more infamous ones for not having really effective special abilities.

    @@Hollow_Tim Both of these explanations are correct. Obviously when people designed games for the NES, many of them were stuck with the design philosophy of arcade games (hence so many games still used the point system even though nobody cared at home) but it's also a way to make the game feel longer and maybe even more rewarding. Plus people had no idea what they are doing many times so they designed games with a really weird logic sometimes (like the infamous Castlevania 2 'crouch in a corner so a tornado can take you away' puzzle) and many times misjudged how well an average player can play or understand the game compared to them after they played the game a billion times. It was the wild west of video game making and there weren't guidelines and set paths to take. That's why games like Mario or Megaman are so outstanding. They managed to create principles which work to this day in those untamed times.

    Oh neat a new video from you. I remember playing this game on 3DS, first with the Virtual Console and then with the Legacy Collection on the 3DS. Aside from Quick Man’s stage. I enjoyed the game. Playing the game also made me learn that like the Metal Blade, the Quick Boomerang is almost as good what with it not running out of ammo as quickly as the Metal Blade which has being able to be aimed over the Quick Boomerang.

    Always happy to see a new Pikasprey video in my feed, especially when it's Megaman! I love the Megaman series, and MM2 is one of my favorites in the classic series, but I'm glad you were so fair with it. It feel like it's a little too widely accepted that MM2 is some sort of perfect game, or the best in classic series, but I think it's historical importance to the series gets mixed in to the narrative. That said Megaman 2 absolutely *is* still a fantastic, must-play classic game, and definitely the first recommendation I give when people ask were to start with classic Megaman

    Over 600 comments at time of posting this, so someone had to mention these before, but on the off chance nobody has: -Best use for Leaf Shield is when riding those platforms on tracks when Telly trios infinitely spawn (the flying cylinders with rotating eyes that track you), as you're not moving so it stays intact. It's a lazy man's ride so you don't have to dodge or shoot them, giving you a breather. -Using Flash Stopper mid-stage is really good when activated just prior to one of the giant enemies popping in (lantern fish in Bubble Man, fire-breathing cat in Wood Man, etc). If activated before they spawn or teleport in the whole way, their hitboxes aren't active yet so you can just run right on past. Granted, their patterns aren't that bad, but it does offer another option. -Quick Boomerangs can damage almost every regular enemy in the game (including some that are invincible to everything else). Its quickfire property makes it easier to rush through certain areas better than the Metal Blade, though -The destructible walls in the Boobeam Trap room don't respawn between attempts, only on game over. If one sucks that bad, they can break all the walls, die, farm to full, and try again. However, it is possible (and my preferred method) to have one Crash Bomb left after this puzzle boss. On the left wall, if you hit just underneath the exposed trap on the left or the top of the barrier right underneath it, you can take out both the wall and the trap. If you want to conserve mobility item power, you could break both the walls on the lower right with a single bomb as well, though that aiming is a bit of a pain (I'd rather just use an Item 3). Granted, these may not be as obvious as they were to me on a first playthrough (except for Flash Stopper, as my read of it was pretty much the same initially- took watching speedruns for that idea to change).

    A really insightful video on one of my favourite NES games ever! The crash bomb boss was always a part of this game I hated, so I'm glad you talked about why that was so bad but it was really interesting to hear your thoughts on other parts of the game I kinda gave a pass to due to nostalgia, like the final boss. I actually didn't know a lot of the stuff you said in this video, like some of the weaknesses and skips with the 3 items. This and Zelda 2 are the only NES games I've beaten multiple times and enjoyed. Great video

    I cannot agree more with your points here, MegaMan 2 is the game that truly made the franchise stand out, but it's far from being the pinnacle of the series that a ton of people claim it is. Sadly, due to the time constraints there are so many new issues that even MM1 ends up being a better experience (critically speaking). So, great review, I'm really enjoying your takes on these games, looking forward to the MM3 review.

    While Mega Man 2 has some improvements over the original (like the passwords and the E-Tanks), I still believe this is one of the weaker entries in the classic series. Maybe I am biased because of its overpraise but from a more analytical stance, there are plenty of issues with it: Unbalanced weapons, badly designed bosses (Air Man and his unavoidable tornadoes for example) and unbalanced dificulty in certain areas (like the dissapearing blocks section of Heat Man). Even Akira Kitamura is aware of some of its unpolished parts. Thanks for the video, though.

    from an analytical standpoint? it's definitely one of the weakest i think, but it also happens to be the one i've replayed the most this might be because it's one of the easier entries, stages are pretty short, bosses die fast with their weaknesses (and many die fast even with just the mega buster on normal mode) and the more you replay a game the easier it is to get through the next time so i've definitely built up a tolerance to most of its bullshit so even though i'd probably put it near the middle in terms of my personal "mega man ranking" I really like it anyways, i like them all really except for 4 and 7, and even then 4 and 7 aren't even bad games I just don't like them too much personally

    One of my proudest moments of my gaming life was cracking the password system logic so I could assign myself any combination of weapons and items on starting the game. I'd noticed a lot of my password saves looked roughly similar and figured out how they worked. Looking back it seems this wasn't actually that hard but I'm still proud of it.

    I've really enjoyed this look back at a series that was a little before my time. Growing up in a world where Mega Man was already Ubiquitous in gaming it's really fun to see how it all got started. It also just blows me away that Sega created a Hedgehog who can run faster than sound and Capcom made a robo kid who can shoot lasers... and the winner of the mascot wars was a plumber... who can jump.

    For years on Wily Stage 4 I would purposely not get any of the pickups along the way. When I got to the boss, break ALL the walls and die. From there go back to the beginning of the stage and collect the power ups to fill up your Crash Bomber, and use the Sniper Joes at the end to refill as well. From there, the boss is easier. It was only as an adult I learned how to beat the boss without losing a life.

    I kinda hate the Metal Blade dominant strat in this game. Part of the fun in Megaman is messing with the different weapons but when Metal Blade is the best choice in 95% of situations it kinda takes that fun out, plus it makes this one of the easiest Megaman games in the series (easily the easiest on the NES). I still love this game, but now I usually play it without the Metal Blade.

    Bubble Lead is actually Bubble Lead, pronounced "leed", like when you lead something, like it leads the way forward so you won't fall into pits. I know, it was confusing for me for years as well, but after playing the Japanese version, it's no longer a question, as it types out the weapon names phonetically. Then again, the Japanese version has Clash Man instead of Crash Man, so I don't know...
