Really is a lovely game, this. I programmed the english language translation (as well as other EU languages) so I was forced to play it all the way through. A very impressive game , throughout.

this one had really smooth gameplay, i liked it, didnt even need to compare with any Legend of the Zelda game, smilarity doesnt mean they copy each other, this one has its own story, music, graphic set and gameplay.

The level design is rather different anyways(this game has a bigger focus on things like platforming)

This was such a great game and even today it looks good.

This was my first rpg. I only played it because it showed Sonic made a cameo on the back of the cover

Good old Sega. They haven't lost their charm. Man I loved these classic games. Some are even greater than games that have been made today. Thanks for playing these games.

@@777Eliyahu I do still have the game. The cartridge is in great shape, but the box is horribly water damaged. I think it was that way when I got it at a flea market back in '98 though. The manual is missing, and I'm pretty sure I had it at one point. Oh well, it's a great game anyway.

Anyone who dismisses this as a second rate Zelda clone clearly hasn't played this or is a silly Nintendo fanboy (or both). It was influenced by Zelda but it's such an innovative, imaginative game that it demands to be judged on it's own merits. The story was great for it's time with twists that literally turned the gameworld on it's head such as gaining the ability to speak to animals but losing the ability to speak to humans, having to go back in time to change the future and at one point being changed into one of the monsters and seeing things from their perspective! Similarly the gameplay was full of innovation & variety - constantly evolving as you learned new skills and throwing new things at the player. Truly an overlooked gem!

Even though I started with SNES ALTTP three years prior to the Mega Drive (Genesis), those ridiculous competitions between x and y always gave me a strange, almost sad resp. deeply melancholic feeling. I remember, on the back of the game sleeve were those grandiloquent words "Besser als Zelda!" (better than Zelda) - it never, never, never felt good to me, like if I have to tear my memories into meaningless pieces for a moment, while perceiving the game with an even more rigorous evaluation only to reduce the fresh experience of the games own peculiarity. So, I didn't even try to compare, only just because of a similiar gameplay, it was another entertaining Adventure/RPG on its own! I still don't get it, why they call it a Zelda clone to this day: One might wonder, if they actually have ever heard of any other game with top-down perspective? ^^ PS: I could take one bad step foreward - There are small features in Soleil, which seemed to be a slight inspiration for Ocarina of Time! ... I hear them cry "Blasphemy!" ;-)

0:41 This synth-trumpet sound is great. I don't recall hearing it in any genesis titles. It almost sounds "SNES-like", (for instance Sim City on SNES), except much cleaner sounding. This game really has a fantastic soundtrack all in all that absolutely strays a lot from that gritty genesis sound in a lot of places. Really love it. Wish it wasn't so pricey... T_T

A very loaded comment, almost sounds SNES like. Indeed, but the SNES has weaknesses like slow-down which made RTS games like Herzog Zwei and Dune impossible. I regard the MD as the console of that era, given its influence on the industry and the many conventions like save states in game using 32-bit programming, games like Light Crusader, although unknown to consumers, inspired the guys at Blizzard and hence Diablo. When paused the game displays a dungeon map, with the players position indicated. The character can also freely jump - a raity on SNES adventure games, like Illusion of Time (Gaia) which had jumping points scattered throughout the stages. A beautiful game presentation wise, but almost laughable from a gaming perspective, and for me, that just defines the SNES, pretty games which aged poorly. Secret of Mana suffered horrendous slow-down during boss fight dropping sound layers and the characters move at 12 FPS after walking the seasons spring, winter... I hope you get the reference here - although, the game looked amazing in game magasines. SNES basically played catch up and marginally won after a vicious media campaign, based around: bad colours, bad sound, promoted by the biased game mags. In reality, MD had the full range of games, SNES was the perfection of JRPGs. Action RPGs and turn based strategy are the MDs domain. Also, Sega crushed Nintendo's monopoly and defined the gaming industry we have today. Who knows, without the MD, we might still be playing our NES at its over-inflated price range...

Without the SNES, Sega would've gotten lazy. Be thankful the SNES existed, so to create competition and force Sega to continue making games people loved. Of course Sega would be their own undoing by some of the terrible decisions they made (the 32X was a flop, the Sega CD should've been more than stupid FMV games, look at the Lunar games, Popful Mail, and Keio Flying Squadron and what they could do with the CD technology), killing off the Saturn too early in the US, and launching it with a dry run of 3 games for months (while in Japan, the Saturn library was very, very impressive), and the quick exit from the console industry before the Dreamcast could really get it's legs under it. SNES games have not aged poorly, it is the fanboy in you that thinks they have, just like the SNES fanboys who think the Genesis games have aged poorly (other than both consoles Amiga ports, which I personally can't stand). If anything, both consoles games have stood the test of time, you just can't bring yourself around to give the the SNES the credit it rightfully deserves. Comments like that show you are just as bad as the SNES fanboys Genesis fanboys detest, the EXACT same. As someone who owns both an SNES, and a Genesis, and has 352 games combined for both, all I can do is pity you, and shake my head at you. As for the processor thing, I'll give the Genesis credit for that, but like the SNES, it too had it's share of bad games. Going by the way you spelled colours (colors), you have to be from the UK, where the Genesis did dominate, but here in the US, and in Japan, the SNES got the upperhand, the 2 biggest markets for both Nintendo, and Sega. All my friends had SNES's, and the few friends I knew who had a Genesis, traded the thing in as soon as the SNES came out. I did the opposite, though I kept my SNES, I got my first Genesis in 1998 because I wanted to open another world of games for myself to enjoy. I was anti Sega for a good bit of the 90's, but I smartened up and gave the Genesis a chance. But you still seem a bit bitter towards the SNES for some reason. The console wars are over, time to stop playing the bullshit playground console wars game, and enjoy the library both systems gave us.

A hidden gem

1:07:29 This level has a huge game breaking bug. If you enter the castle without the Lion, you can glitch-bypass frozen Amon there without unfreezing him using the fire power, just by jumping around and throwing your sword bouncing. After that you can pretty much reach the boss level where you'll be trapped with no way to defeat him since you need both the penguin and lion.

There is another way to break the game in that level, too, although I don't know what triggers it. On my most recent playthrough I did not get teleported out of the castle after defeating Georama. I was able to leave the castle through the entrance, go back to Babel tower, take the elevator up without having the caterpillar leave the group and finish the entire heaven section of the game. Afterwards you get teleported back outside the tower, but it's impossible to leave because there's no pupa for you to get the Butterfly from and disable the barrier.

I discovered this game from Gaming Historian as a Zelda clone. It’s not so much a clone but inspired by A Link to the Past. But it’s far from being anything near it…

soleil does look a lot like alttp at first glance, though they are very different games who happen to be in the same genre. I would say if you're a Zelda fan Soleil is definitely worth looking into. It's a very refreshing experience, and has much more RPG elements than the Zelda series (aside from Z2)

Is this rare? I never knew that. I remember buying it with my birthday money for about £15 after renting it a few times. One of my favourite Megadrive games. It's really good in so many ways, especially the music.

Yes its a fairly rare game..IT came out near the end of Genesis life and practically no one heard about it. It soon ended in the bargain bin. Now the game is worth a couple hundred dollars..

Ive been looking for this game for days now! i never knew that it came under the name crusader of centy! it had soleil on the front of my mega drive box and my version was english! Time to get my ROM on!

Wow, this kid sure does enjoy mowing the lawn... its a shame the kids of today arent built the same way.

FYI, on the battle against Georama there's a game breaking glitch. If you deal the last blow while standing in the doorway Georama will give his "I'm defeated" speech and you'll leave the room. There's no way to get to the icy trees and you don't get your +1 HP. This makes the game impossible to beat. I just found out the hard way.

I can confirm this, I had it and it was called Soleil. And it was a German copy so I understood nothing. ^^

For all the people who say this game copied a link to the past just remember the nes Zelda copied the top down/ screen scrolling style from games like Hydlide which came out on the PC88. Just saying Zelda wasn't original either.

I'd say it was just a coincidence. Both games have this theme about violence against monsters and ultimately how bad it is in the end, but the graphics, presentation, and gameplay is much closer to EarthBound/Mother 2.

I just played through this game myself and I have to say that it was a decent game overall. It suffers from some flaws like the translation and a rather poor story. But the gameplay is all right and it's very colorful, so I'd definitely recommend this game to any retro gamer, I must admit.
