I’ll never forget reading the book after growing up the on the Winona Ryder version. Jo was not only unhappy about John liking her sister, when Meg wasn’t sure of her own feelings yet she egged her on to completely crush him so he’d never pursue her again. It was really cruel and when Jo was going back to the room, she was so convinced Meg had done it she was going to have a good laugh at John’s pain and then feel self satisfied that everything would go back to normal. She found out that Meg had realized she was in love with John, and she tried to tattle on her to their parents for being inappropriate. But when the parents approved of the marriage, Jo sat and sulked until she realized the marriage had to be on hold for a couple years until John could find steady employment. Then she started thinking confidently she could break them up in that time. Then it basically time jumps to the wedding 😂 Jo was amazing in so many ways but completely hateful to people who she thought were less intelligent or interesting. And she constantly made her sisters feel bad for their dreams and ambitions. Only hers were good enough. Except Beth since she was content with life at home too. She was just self centered and emotionally immature for most of the book.

Jo’s comments regarding Meg getting married to John, stem from her own unreadiness to marry. Jo didn’t understand why women rushed to marry so quickly when they grew up. Jo just wasn’t ready yet. She hadn’t gotten there yet. She needed her independence first and to meet a man who cherished who she actually was instead of who he expected her to be. And she found that with prof. Baer. He was from a different country where women weren’t that constrained and could do what they wanted with or without a husband. He saw Jo as she was and didn’t expect her to change herself to suit what he wanted. The men in that area would’ve found Jo to be too independent and intimidating to suit them.

I think it has to do with Jo not WANTING things to change rather than just not going anywhere. She knows the life she had with her mother and sisters was a good one but this new life (one where her sisters are getting married and leaving home) is unknown and that scares her. Jo will eventually have to go somewhere (not just because that’s how the story ends) but due to her uncertainty about where she belongs in the “real world” (that at the time didn’t give women that many opportunities) she is fighting it.

I doubt they were significantly less happy than women in most any other time period. People tend to regress to a baseline emotional state based on their native disposition regardless of the conditions they find themselves in, just like the way a new car no longer gives you joy after a few months or a heartbreak loses its sting over time.

The book makes it clear that Jo didn’t want things to change whether her sisters left through marriage or other ways simply because she didn’t want their family dynamics to change. I think the movie conveyed this pretty well. The family was her safe haven and all she was truly certain of. She wasn’t sure she wanted to get married or if she could have a decent career (given the era) or whether she would fit into society at all (she was something of a rebel and a tomboy). She was also scared that because of her prickly personality, she would wind up a lonely old maid without many friends. She wasn’t trying to hold Meg back out of selfishness so much as trying to hold on to what she knew and was used to.

There's no chemistry between the actresses I mean Emma Watson is such a bad actress and Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh are such strong personalities - the whole movie seems so pathetic. You can read in read in their face very well that they're carrying bot the true charisma of the figure but their own. I prefer the Mini-Series version with Maya Hawke who is just excellent in her role.

You know honestly if you watch the 1994 version of it, there are more feminist ideations in that. But for your suggestion that it ruins it, I find that absurd. Some poignant and true observations were made that women couldn’t have been blind to in that day and age. Sorry that offends you so much.
