Growing up, we never really had a mounting blocks available, so ground mounting was most often the only option. My horse was 17hh. I was VERY good at ground mounting! Plus, this was many years ago, before anyone thought about the health benefits to the horse, so only lazy people used mounting blocks.

Also question what they think riding is? I can't stand people who think horses are dumb because horses can be trained! I know how smart and loving they are!

Not always; I don’t use a mounting block to mount, as there’s really no danger in NOT using one. That’s just riders being lazy because they have “tall” horses and “stretch their muscles” if they mount from the ground. You ALWAYS have to be able to mount from the ground, that is why you do it daily.

What they mean by you should be able to ground mount your horse is that you, as a rider, should be physically fit enough to mount without a block. That is not to say that if you are short with a tall horse that you must be able to get on from the ground. It's saying that if you are so out of shape that you can't lift your leg high enough or pull yourself up then you shouldn't be riding. This only works for a horse that is proportionately sized to you. Mean by this if you are riding a pony (for instance a halflinger) and are 5'6 then obviously you would be able to mount from the ground (don't ride horses that are too small for you, just an example + most halfies are pretty strong) but the opposite also takes effect. If you are 5'2 and are riding a 17 hand warmblood, you are most likely going to need a block. It is much easier on both you and the horse to use a block but you should be in some sort of shape to be riding ( not saying you have to be super skinny, not trying to offend anyone)

Thanks for asking, Mighty Mouse 101! (Love your avatar, btw.) If Cody and I go out on a trail ride, we switch back and forth between English and western, depending on our mood (he’s about to turn 28 on April 1st, so we take it easy these days). I do have dreams of leasing (maybe buying - who knows?!) an eventer and getting back into competing, but I’d have to get a lot more fit before I’m ready for that. But a girl can dream, right?! Especially if it’s about horses! Have a great ride! - SmartPaker Sarah

Cody actually just recently moved closer to Sarah here in MA, and we’re not sure which of them is more thrilled! You can see footage of Sarah and Cody together in our video review on the Hadley Knee Patch Breeches (kzread.info/dash/bejne/nmd7y9xqcqzOfMY.html ) and the Ariat Sunstopper Show Shirt (kzread.info/dash/bejne/dKt-l8aFlsurctY.html ). Mounting from the ground is NOT bad for the horse if you were actually taught how to do things CORRECTLY...

  • @emoheartsJR

Not trying to start anything or cause drama, but mounting from the ground is actually not very good for a horses back. Now, if someone is a little 80 pound skinny minny and the horse is a 16 hh giant. Then no, it won't hurt the horses back. But most horseback riders are over 80 pounds and the average horse is around 15-15.2 hh.

emoheartsJR if you hang on your saddle and put all your weight into one stirrup, it is bad for the horse. A lot of riders can get on without doing that, or causing any sort of damage at all. A good test of that is actually taking off the cinch and mounting. If you can do that and still have the saddle on the horses back, you're definitely not hurting the horse.
