Help me to keep making videos and restoring this Chateau by visiting my official PATREON page.

My name is Michael Petherick and I live with my family at Chateau de la Basmaignee in north west France.
My brother and his fiancé bought this building with some inheritance money three years ago and we are slowly restoring it to live in, and run as a business.
It’s always a financial struggle to keep the place going and we have to work hard to keep our heads above water, but we love it and wouldn’t have It any other way.
When they knew that they were buying the château, my brother asked me if I would like to move over and take part in their new adventure... so I packed my bags, gave up my life in England and moved here to help bring this place back to life.
We do all the renovations ourselves including construction, decorating and collecting antique furniture that we buy cheaply to restore. Our goal is to fill the château with beauty and life as it once was.
I have a passion for history, art and all things old.
These videos are a series of stories about my life and experiences living in a French castle
I’ll be showing all aspects of life here, from renovation and DIY, to crafts and baking, art, daily life and a bit of fun thrown in for good measure. There’s much more to see and our journey is still just beginning.

Michael, I'm a chicken lover myself and here is a tip for you: when it is getting warmer the chickens might get problems with red mite attacking them at night. I think these creatures are called that way in English, in Dutch it is 'bloedluis'. If they get attacked a lot the chickens get ill. To prevent this you could use some poisonous stuff, but a much healthier option is to use raw lin seed oil on all the wooden parts of the coop. The red mite will die in the oil. You have to repeat it a few times during the summer, because the wood absorbs the oil. I have never used poison and since we have chickens always used raw lin seed oil and no problems with these nasty little buggers! And happy chickens!

Chickens are great to have around. Ours have stopped laying double-yolkers now, but we used to get one almost every day when they first started. Please wear a mask when cleaning the coop, or a bandana or something... Bacteria, even in dried chicken dung, can cause serious lung disease, and dried dung powder gets airborne really easily to be inhaled. Ernest's "pok pok pok" made me smile. I don't understand how you've done the seeds - What liquid have you added? We take ours and sort-of smear them across a paper towel, straight from the tomato. The smearing breaks most of the gel-coating and the paper towel dries them quickly. We let them dry flat, then just roll them up and tuck them away... They stay stuck to the paper towel. When it's planting time, we peel them off or just tear the towel to bits and plant it with them. Fast, easy, and has worked well here.

We were amazed and couldn’t believe what had happened. Of course she thought that was all she had to do every time she wanted an egg. Sadly it never happened again but we did have several double Yolkers. You can bear your own fresh eggs especially free range ones.

@@hollywill2226 I often wish I could know him personally, but I only know what I observe on the videos. I am old enough to know a really wonderful guy when I see one, even if just on videos. I hope he continues to share his life on these videos, but I wonder how much of that can anyone take? Everyone needs to have their privacy and not be totally exposed to other people's evaluations and criticisms. Maybe Michael doesn't read comments; that might be best.

This was just lovely, Micheal. Just what I needed. It's impossible to choose my fav part, but definately the addition of your ladies in the chicken coop, and Ernest's reaction! 😘💙 Just adorable. Much Love, from Ontario, Canada 🇨🇦... Keli 💖

When we were little boys in Ohio and spending time at our grandmother's house, our mother would send my brother and me out to the chicken coop to fetch fresh eggs. Until this video, that memory had not entered my head in decades but I can see upon reflection just how rich those memories still are and how lucky we were. Here we see another little boy who will have fortunate memories. And his Uncle Michael will also provide many of them. Is there anything this guy cannot do, and always with a smile on his face?

🇨🇦❤️Oh Michael! You have brought me so much joy today! My parents always kept chickens and pheasants, (chickens for eggs and pheasants to eat), so it was lovely to see and hear your new feathered friends. I hope you can put a comparison on video between store purchased eggs and “real” eggs as my father called them. Yolks of real eggs are high and bright orange whereas the ones from stores are flat and pale yellow. The flavour is so much better as well, as you know. It was so lucky that you went to the rubbish tip with the family and discovered the items that would have been lost. The footage of your Dad and Ernest looking in at the chickens is beyond wonderful. (I’ve subscribed to Seans channel as well, naturally. Thank you for the link). Thanks for the information about the heirloom tomato seeds. I will definitely take advantage of that and grow some delicious tomatoes of my own. Finally, the impromptu piano concert made my heart soar. I wish you could have seen me smiling. I just couldn’t stop. I know that if Miss Potter had ever met you, she would have become your dear friend. 🐇
