Meet The Maker | With Christoph Kemper From Kemper Amplification

Музыка

The modern-day amplification legend that is Christoph Kemper, mastermind of the Kemper Profiler, kindly popped by the Andertons TV studio for over an hour of pure gear nerdery. Cap chats with Christoph about his musical background, his extensive experience with synth design, and of course the impact that the Kemper Profiler has had on the guitar world - pretty fascinating stuff.

I am always impressed with forward thinkers. However, Christoph Kemper is pretty rare. He is also able to reasonably project the implications of his business decisions prior to committing to a course of action. Not only is he a great innovator/inventor, he is also a great chief executive officer. I think of Nikola Tesla or Elon Musk; they are/were both incredibly talented, intelligent, educated men, but had issues at times, especially Tesla, with the business end of things. I certainly appreciated this episode, Lee Anderton. Your willingness to (gracefully) ask the tough question and Christoph's candor and succinct reply made for a very thought provoking dialogue. Well done.

Being interviewed in what is your second language at such a depth is quite a daunting task too..... Though I wish Lee would have prepped up a bit more and not been so naive in off the cuff questions. He got caught out a couple of times...I don't know what happened BTS, but some very busy people would've taken offence at such loose questioning, wondering if their valuable time was being wasted on stuff the interviewer should've know about before hand.

I had the pleasure of a long chat with Christoph at Summer NAMM last year. Not 70 minutes, mind you, but much more than a "Hi, howarya". A lovely man, who impressed me with how he thinks about products. What impressed me most was his intent to strike the optimal balance between flexibility and usability. In other words, being able to achieve maximum tweakability with the least effort, greatest repeatabliity, and an easily comprehensible interface.

I got highest respect for Christoph, I own a Kemper, and there is nearly no quality difference between my tube amps and their profiles, wether its the amp in the room sound or recording. Also everyone should be greatful to not have a company that is trying to get you buying the latest model every few years. Thats a great USP, too, I find. What I struggle with is their marketing. I think they miss the most obvious USP they have: They are unique. A profile is like a sample of a sound. Modelling is like a synthesiser, re-creating via software an amp sound. Thats what they should be keep pointing out. Instead even Christoph allows a comparison (in this interview) profiling to modelling, but the only common thing is that they are digital. Thats like comparing a tube amp to a valvestate amp, as they are both analog. But thats not true, isn't it? I think we need to be aware what kind of products we compare.

The "recording doesn't sound like the amp in my room" problem also holds the solution - you need to introduce the "room" aspects into the directional dry sound. This means reverb + delay + chorus = room altered reflections you are used to hear, but the key is to make each one of them very subtle (just before you start noticing them) and together they make a big difference. At least those are my observations for the past year that I'm trying to record myself and watch mixing tutorials, like Andrew Scheps stuff. Also the "Haas effect" has a lot to do with your stereo perception and really good to understand for mixing.

Dr. Z have done this. They made proper profiles of their own amps and sold them on their site. They could take it a step further: design one of a kind amps and produce just 1, profile that and not make the amp available for purchase. Then the only way to get the sound is to buy the profile directly from them. 🤣

You are kinda directly in the spotlight, and when it works for you, you establish a following. Fine. But thats a different way to get where you are. And its up to you to work on how to do things properly, and this is not only the technical side of it (lights, sound, resolution, editing etc.).

35:30 What Christoph is describing was my first impression of the Kemper and it took me a day or two to realise that what I was hearing (and was throwing me a bit) was the mic'ed sound, like what you'd hear in the recording control room NOT what the amp would sound like when you stand next to it. Now, for home recording, that's actually very good....because you mix the amp at the source and just go straight into the recording DAW, no need to worry about mic placement, or quality of cabling etc...

People without that prior experience, or being told that is what is out of the box, will be surprised and maybe not what they want to hear first up...

What's funny is that I've been playing guitar for 12 years and I've always liked how studio guitar sounds, they sound massive, they sound full, they sound nice and cut without all the fizz and boom that comes with a normal guitar. And that's a tone I could never achieve ever outside of a mixed-studio situation where I route the guitars and they come out into in-ears already mixed. The kemper was a total game changer for me as a musician I can play with tones that are a bit more processed (LPF/HPF mainly, then slight compression) that get this already massive studio tone that I love to hear.

Simply knowing that you don't have to upgrade constantly to have newer firmware/software revisions makes me want a Kemper even more. I have also wondered why someone couldn't make a skeleton type chassis that you could load modules into. That way if you wanted/needed more power you could get the larger power amp or more processing power get the dual or quad DSP module and so on. If they could have a few base packages that you could control down to easy to install modules this would make things even more interesting. Just something I have thought about as I see more and more amazing digital solutions. Lastly, as others are saying it's refreshing to see a company ran with love rather than simply money. Granted everyone wants to do well but the love and respect of your customer base is something a lot of companies totally miss. Great video and guest and of course interviewer :)

Christoph is a really interesting individual. When he talks about “disruptive” technology. There is a lot of theory about innovation, how a paradigm changer technology is adopted by individuals. He knows about it.

Really interesting bloke with some cracking ideas about commercial business. Guitar players have the choice of what to use based on their preferences and needs, it's what makes us such geeks and keeps a lot of different companies in business!

Though I have no desire to own a Kemper (I've owned most of the Line 6 products at one point), this was an awesome interview. I really like the fact that it was just a simple discussion. The only thing missing was a couple of beers!!

I just ordered my first Kemper today, and then I see this pop up in my KZread subscriptions...I'm looking forward to the journey ahead! I love the sound of Orange amps in a room but after experimenting with all sorts of microphones and DI boxes I give up on trying to get the sound I want recorded. Now it's Kemper time, I can't wait to just load up a professional tone so I can get back to actually playing. First stop: the official Fortin and Victory profiles...

Tone Junkie has some great videos as well to learn! It took me a while to get comfortable with it, but once I did, I have sold every tube amp I own. Get the free packs from Tone Junkie, MBritt, etc.,. But yes, the Fortin and Victory profiles are amazing as well. If you want heavy stuff, try out the Josh Middleton stuff! (Guitarists from Architects, Sylosis). Try getting a good performance or two online and that'll make your life a lot easier!

Thanks for the suggestions, my Kemper is now loaded up with Michael Britt, Rabea and Nolly GetGood profiles and I predictably sold three tube amps and about eight pedals...nobody talks about the GATE on these things, I've owned every noise gate on the market and the way Kemper kills noise on a heavy tone is arguably more effective and satisfying than other solutions.

The discussion of mic'd sounds vs the sound coming out a guitar amp is really interesting. I'm chasing sounds I hear on KZread, but they're not straight out of an amp, they're recorded and processed etc. Maybe that's the reverse of the traditional problem Christoph was met with.

This was a very good and interesting interview. I have heard bits and pieces of some of what was covered before but this really walked through the development process nicely. It would be cool to have similar interviews. For example, Captain meets Andrew Barta (from Tech 21) would be very interesting.

Very interesting interview! It’s pretty amazing that Christoph doesn’t even play guitar, but managed to deliver a product that emulates gold-standard guitar tone & feel better than any other competing brand. He seems to have a brilliant mind for insights into what people really want when they can’t even explain it (e.g., that other modelers sounded good, but not *familiar*).

Nice interview. You’ve sked some controversial questions that many of us want to ask. Keep doing it. It is very interesting to hear the view of important companies about the guitar industry and their own decisions. Kemper has a big understanding of what he is doing. My only complaint is that his new products like editor, Kemper cone, new drive updates, etc. take a lot of time to be released. I believe they need to scale up the product development a little bit.

I use my Pedalboard and analog Amps whenever I can and I have the Kemper for small venues where you can't have a lot of volume on the stage and as a backup in case something goes wrong with my other equipment.
