I can only imagine that his bagpiping and overflowing war spirit really helped lift up the mood in the soldiers who fought by his side. I mean imagine being so terrified as you are heading to the front lines but the dude in front of you is standing tall with a smile on his face and blasting some inspiring bagpipe songs from your homeland. Then, once you arrive, he draws his sword and screams war cries as he charges in. He must have really got everyone’s blood pumping and spirits high. That kinda positive energy can honestly make a difference in a life or death situation where some may feel too afraid to even move or do anything productive

Highly agree. The fear of being killed can cause people to freeze up, or move slowly across the access point trying to hide and take extended cover and be overly cautious. This is particularly dangerous and counter productive when doing something like invading land by boat into a fortified position. Hesitation means you remain in the field of fire way longer and are way more likely to get killed.

The Pipes are the ultimate psychological weapon. To someone unaccustomed to the sound, I believe it can be unnerving. Nothing can make morale crumble faster. Also, if the pipes are on your side and you hear them on the wind, you understand them to mean "hold on; help is coming".

When I was in the National Guard, the Sargent in charge of our Scouts played the pipes. You have no idea what it is like to be woken up at 4 AM by a piper! The difference between a set of bagpipes and an onion is that nobody cries when you chop up the bagpipes!

This chad is like your character in an mmo rpg game, maxing out on weird abilities, being unstoppable, and giving morale boost to his party. Even the story line fits. Hell, this guy even had plot armor. He was just destined to meet te great escapists, so the story could progress. What a legend.

Oddly enough, one reason they have to come up with macho heroes like Rambo is ... because no one would believe the real-life heroes actually did what they did. Mad Jack is just one example. Another is legendary Medal of Honor winner Audie Murphy, who for this reason asked that Hollywood tone down his own biopic -- in which he starred as himself!

Rambo was about war veterans (especially Vietnam) and PTSD. He's not supposed to be a hero, he's a victim. Remember, his first movie isn't about fighting a war, it's about being hunted down by small town authorities that pushed him too far.

This guy needs a movie about him made.

When you speak of WW2 and bagpipes, you can't forget Bill Millin, who played his pipes under fire on Sword Beach during the D-Day invasion. Later, when German POWs were asked why they didn't shoot him, they said they thought he had to be mad to do that. He later played his pipes as Lord Lovat's troops marched to Pegasus Bridge.

The man launched his bag out a train window to avoid carrying it home 😂 that’s the best way to start a film about him 😂

How in the hell was he able to accomplish all of these amazing feats while also dragging along the worlds largest set of brass balls with him?! What an absolute unit

Massive props to the animator for proper depiction of a broadsword as a basket-hilted sword. Armchair novelty historian sites and channels tend to refer to it as Claymore(!), in that one famous photo of him from a landing, when he's visibly wielding a sword, despite it being of not best quality, it's rather visible it's closer to a basket-hilted sword rather than two handed sword.

As a man who has tried very hard to be some sort of modern equivalent, and failed miserably but meeting a few shadows of “Mad Jack” along the way… it’s troubling. Many of you got it right when you described him as a main character in a video game. At 43 I’ll be heading off to Ranger school, at 29 I graduated BUD/S. I’ve been a mountaineering medic, dolphin trainer, white water rafting guide, explosives expert, COVID researcher and currently learning to fly. I say all this to let you know I’m not joking (I’ve played at being a cowboy, plumber, Alaskan fisherman, and a dozen other jobs along the way as well). The thing is, while I’ve done these things, I’ve never excelled at any of them. Half the time I left before I got fired, often I did get fired. These talented bastards (I say that with a smile and a small amount of jealousy) really do still exist today, but at 42 I’d really like to find something I’m good at that scratches that itch. I just failed a flight examination given to me by a boy young enough to be my son. Anyways, have a good one everybody!

If a man wishes to do something and he puts his mind to it there is nothing that will stop him short of killing him. I was 26 and told by 3 different doctors by the age of 30 I would be crippled in a wheelchair unable to walk. In 2004 I saw a doctor who done Xrays on me and my back and his exact words were "How the Hell are you walking? These Xrays tell me you should not be able to walk and they tell me you should be on serious pain meds. But I know your walking I seen you walk in here and I know you refuse to take pain meds." I simply smiled and said well here is the thing I refuse to simply give up and will keep walking as for pain meds I have learned to live with pain and ignore it. I am now 51 and will be 52 in January and I am still walking and refuse to take pain meds. The mind is Amazing in the things it can do when focuses and harnessed. You having gone through BUD/s you know yourself that the human body is capable of being pushed far beyond what most people think is possible. Defeat starts in ones own mind as does Victory the choice is ours to decide which we will have.

I live in Coronado to this day, that’s typically the most falsified part of my story (at the time of my graduation from BUD/s there were around 6k graduates since the founding of the NCDU/UDT school first in Florida during WW2 later to Virginia and since the 60’s Coronado, and likely many tens of thousands who claimed to have). Should you ever find yourself on our little island, I am at McP’s every Friday afternoon 4-6pm. I’ll happily buy you a beer, I’ll be drinking a cider from my registered mug to Chuck.

On the subject of WW2 legends, please talk about Amedeo Guillet in one of your next videos. He conducted a private war against the British in North Africa during WW2, led an army of local fighters and fooled British Intelligence so many times it is incredible. He was believed to be immortal by both his enemies and his men and once led a successful cavalry attack against an entire British armored column. After the war he joined the fight against Fascism in Italy and became an agent and then a diplomatic, and he even saved the lives of many European ambassadors during a failed coup in Yemen. There is much much more to his story I would love for you to make a video on him

"Major Allison Digby Tatham-Warter" dude took out a frikkin tank......with an umbrella, and lead a massive prison escape, in plain sight of the enemies, via bicycle. another time Digby noticed a chaplin pinned down by enemy fire while trying to cross the street to get to injured soldiers. Digby got to him and said "Don't worry about the bullets, I've got an umbrella". He then escorted the chaplain across the street under his umbrella. When he returned to the front line, one of his fellow officers said about his umbrella that "that thing won't do you any good", to which Digby replied "Oh my goodness Pat, but what if it rains?" hes basically the "monty python" esque parody of "mad jack", but he too is badass, and actually a real person.

Like the Blackfeet tribesman who fought in WW1 with his Bowie and custom Tomahawk! Dood was a legit unit unto himself! It is said he would creep in on outposts and silently kill everyone and he’d leave one alive( every time to tell the tale. Heard the story from my great grandpa who was Blackfoot and Sioux. Have a small album of pictures of this warrior and his unit.

I would love to hear that story and see those photos. My daddy was in occupied Japan but at some point he was in a military hospital because he had a heart murmur. He said there was a man there who looked like a big Samoan or some island native. Everyone was afraid to talk to him because he was scary and everywhere this man went he carried a briefcase. My daddy being young and friendly offered the man a piece of gum while they both were waiting to see a doctor. He asked him what was in the briefcase. This man had fought in the pacific and the briefcase had clear pages, each one filled with trophies from every kill he had made. And he had made a lot of kills. He had everything from unit patches to human ears. He would sneak up on lone Japanese soldiers and cut their throats and they never made a sound. One time he killed a soldier that was eating a sandwich and so he took his sandwich. He told daddy that it had a little blood on it so daddy said what did you do? The man said I ate it, my grandfather was a headhunter. I wish daddy was still here to tell that story cause I can't do it justice.

This should be the best WWII movie ever made. I don't understand how Guy Ritchie or Quentin Tarantino didn't bring this story to the big screen yet. the video is pretty well narrated... maybe you should think about writing the script or directing the movie yourself...

A Thoughty2 video about the man known as "Mad Jack" ??? Just what I needed.. even though I know the story, I love hearing it, and Thoughty2 has an unparalleled ability to tell stories.

Yes. The dentists that died defending patients in a hospital from Japanese soldiers . Desmond Doss saved 75 men in one day under fire. Refused to carry a weapon because of personal beliefs . Audie Murphy the same as this guy . Time and time again proving how heroic they are. Some of the Gurkhas . Last stands all over the place. . And not just guys . Women, kids. Hero's come in all sizes and shapes.

He is one of my friends' great inspiration. The lad is in the army now and specifically asked to be sent out abroad because he got sick of cleaning tanks. He told me that, on one of his missions, he killed a man with a fork in a one v one fight. Not quite at Mad Jack-levels yet, but well on his way.

After leaving combat, I went aft and sat next to the to the aft lookout to unwind. It was peaceful. The albatross was riding the thermals from the stack. Then I heard this awful screeching behind me. Yep Captian TCJ had brought bagpipes to the hanger doors. Yep Tommy Two Tugs was even wearing his kilt. I was glad it was not the hanger door needing lubrication attention. Along with the impending helo launch. Why the Tommy Two Tugs? He did not trust the amid ships thruster inport. Yes that was what it was for. Also for movement at slow speeds. 360 degree movement. Sadly FFG 37 got sank as a target. It also put up a fight. Took 8 hours for it to sink, in July 2016.

I can attest to the psychological effects of a bagpipe played live. It absolutely drives away fear and induces a kind of battle high. In 1998, I carried my father's ashes down to our. basement garage to place them in the driver's seat of his favorite classic sports car. Instead of feel8ng grief stricken, I was buoyed up by a sense of triumph at a fitting end to a life well spent. I am rare in liking bagpipe music, but the effect only works when I hear them live. Churchill knew what he was doing.

I must admit that in capable hands the bagpipes will make you experience emotions that you hide inside. Certain songs will bring a lump to your throat.Your eyes may even weep.The only person that would laff at the pipes is the one who never listened to them.

How the hell has Hollywood not made a movie about this guy? What a great story! And kudos to Thoughty2 for a very very well-told tale -- perhaps his best video yet. A really nice touch at the end, to show a photograph of him (Jack I mean) leading his men ashore during the raid.

That was like a Glasgow fever dream I had while on buck fast , swords , fighting and bagpipes !

I thought this was about Bill Millin at first. He was another soldier who marched into battle on D day with no weapons other than his bag pipes, The Germans thought he was mad and didn't shoot him. He became famous for this and he retired down here in Devon and was the local celebrity until he died in 2010

I heard he had the bagpipes under one arm and a claymore (Scottish two handed sword) in the other hand, dunno if that's true or not, probably just a rumour.

I met Bill Millin, heard him playing the pipes on the boat going over for the 50th anniversary of D Day I bought his book which he signed.

i had watched a documentary on the fish oil factory mission but i don't recall the mentioning of mad jack in the retelling of the events. a man after my own heart in a lot of ways he was. thanks for creating this piece sir. and it counts for our kids homeschool history for today.

Probably depends on what kind of soldiers you're attacking. However, considering how badass that would probably look, I would imagine plenty of people would crap themselves. I imagine at least a little bit of mad Jack's look had to do with panic on the half of the person he was attacking.

What a legend, sounds like a stretch but this guy really reminds me of my grandad, played the bagpipes, never gave up on anything and was a courageous man.

Jack Churchill's story is a fascinating one, however your thumbnail shows Bill Millin, Lord Lovat's piper (or at least the actor who portrayed him) as they marched to relieve the troops at Pegasus Bridge during D-Day. Incidentally in the film The Longest Day, actor Richard Todd who had been involved in the action, plays his own CO, leaving another actor to play the younger Todd.

He certainly had something to tell the folks at home about, even his grandchildren, didn't he? I LOVED the longbow incident. That was one in a million!

I'm a 🇨🇦 and I do tons of research on WW2 and I'm pleased to see a story I have never heard of. Thank you thougty. PS I love your animation. Why isn't there a movie made about this bloke?

I've heard stories of my fellow soldiers in Iraq that were bound and determined to get a kill with their NCO saber so they took it along and I think it may have happened too, His legacy lives on!

The one thing about the "knife in a gun fight" trope is that military and police training would tell you that within 30' the knife attacker actually tends to have the advantage.

Hello and Good Day, quite a story about a truly amazing individual. The Allies were fortunate to have this so called Mad Jack... Mad I think is too simple of describing his apparently phenomenal behavior. Broad Sword & Bow seems to describe him well enough. Thank you Thoughty2 for introducing Jack Churchill to us, or to The U.S., as I never before heard or read of such a character. I plan to do a bit of internet research on Mr. Churchill. This should definitely be made into a film, or a mini-series. Would be fascinating for sure...

So many heroes during both World Wars. It seems there were more bagpipers during WW2. That is something I didn't knew. So thanks for this great and informative video!

Glad I’m not the only one who is annoyed by this- but far be it from them to actually honor Mad Jack by rereleasing the video with him labled as something other than one of the worst racist evils in history that he himself fought against…. Because that may screw with their video’s monetization! Which of course is their only reason for existing….

They really need to make a film about Jack Churchill and Sabaton need to do a song about him

There are a few men among millions of their generation. Who dodge bullets, love war, beat all odds. And lived to die of old age. With a fulfilled life behind him. I’m talking about a number less than 10 in each generation. Duke wonder why they exist, and if some divine power, or even a genetic trait for luck bravery etc...

This has to be one of my favorite stories so far.
