i always try to romantisize the winter and call it cosy instead of nasty and grey. can be hard to do sometimes but i try to remind myself that without it being dark and dreary outside, we couldn't have warm-white lanterns or fairy lights or fireplace glows. you get to wrap up warm and have an excuse to knit clothes if you have the time!! also hot meals like soup or a shepherd's pie whilst it's cold and dark outside really hit the spot too. it's the perfect time to try and perfect those recipes. i know that's not a fix-all solution haha and it's all much easier said than done. from one seasonal affective sufferer to another, we got this!

I try to do this too and it does help a bit. I also try to accept winter as an integral part of a cycle and as a chance to allow myself rest and calm. Once I let go of the idea that I had to be as productive, social, busy etc as in other seasons it actually got a lot easier. We got this!

Right, so SAD sucks. I know and I deal with it every year along with my year round anxiety. It can get real hard this time of year, especially when the wretched time change occurs and it’s dark by 4:30pm. What helps me the most is getting outside. I make sure I get outside every single day for at least an hour. It can suck because it’s cold and often dreary and winter lasts 8 months in New Hampshire, but i do it anyway and I’m always glad I did. It really helps having pets too because the dogs and the chickens make being outdoors way more fun. I also make sure I take a multivitamin and vitamin D everyday because them good for the body. So yeah, basically, GET OUTSOIDE, even if it’s shit. ❤

I never cease to be amazed by how both you and Rosie keep looking younger in this new home and with a young child!! You are both absolutely gorgeous and your eyes seem to dance with love and happiness in your relationship. Yes, SAD is peeking its ugly head out about now for me also. My advice is to take advantage of any days that have sunshine in them for outdoor activities, keep busy with crafts and hobbies that you enjoy when you have spare time, and you already have the best of enjoying a loving home and family life. Those are the things that help me with SAD. I'm loving your new adopted chickens adventure! What a great adventure and experience for Ziggy to be a part of also! He just needs some toddler farmer bib overalls, a hat, work gloves and boots to be little farmer Ziggy when he's herding chickens and gathering their eggs ... that would be too cute!! Rosie is already a pro with the chickens ... her connection with animals says a lot about her soul's energy. You will get there with the chickens too ... I was very proud of how close you came to picking up one!! Hearing you mention your bff Emma brought back awesome memories of your early videos! She needs to come visit for a vlog, she's such a fun and beautiful soul!

I used to get quite unmotivated and depressed in the winter, especially because of the shorter days but I would say, try to romanticise the shit out of all of it, find all the silver linings and then that'll bring gratitude to the forefront. Like the sound and the smell of rain, the lights in the dark, hot drinks, wearing jumpers, eating hearty foods, carving pumpkins, Christmas markets, the colour of the trees, the beauty of snow. And then just knowing that all of that is temporary

I suffer from SAD really bad, a couple of things sort of help. 1. I count down the days until the shortest day, it’s usually around the 23rd December, I look forward to the day after as I know from that day on it will be getting lighter everyday. 2. I try and go outside every day and see the light, even if it’s freezing or raining. I wrap up warm and make sure I go out. 3. I make the evenings cozy. I close the curtains early so I don’t notice when it gets dark and make the living room cozy with candles and movies. 4. I ignore the end of daylight saving times. I know it actually happens and I abide by the new time but when it’s dark at like 6pm, in my head I say ‘well really it’s 7pm’. 5. I try and remember it’s not for long. Like right now is about the same daylight time as March and I’m ok.

Ok, so here is my story. I suffer from SDD so bad, this year I almost took my own life. It didn't have that a lot of stuff was happening externally that made things even worse - eg multiple deaths of loved ones. And I fell on my face (in that funny Simpsons style) only it wasn't so funny cos I broke my skull and the main nerve that ran through that area, so I couldn't feel my face for months. And on and on it went. It was a cold, cold hell of a winter, with not a single warm day, and no sunshine at all. Even though I live in Australia. *Grumble* This is what got me through it. I had an epiphany one morning of, "what am I going to do if circumstances continue to get worse". Because by this time I wasn't even leaving my house, I was so scared of the outside world and very un-me. I know you guys hate Cancerians but I am one, so very moody and emotional anyway. And when I get in that low state I start getting body pains (as If that wasn't enough). But the epiphany came on the first day of spring, and ironically when the sun came out. It went like this, "You don't need to wait for things to stop being hard to be happy." and i thought ... "Universe, is that YOU? If so, can I have a confirmation?" And the very next day I came across an American Idol contestants, Nightbirde, who was dying from Cancer but she was so positive and because and what she said next shocked me, She said "You don't need to wait for things to stop being hard to be happy" and sung an original song called "It's ok." I was in tears. Even Simon C was tearing up. But I know that message was confirmation from above. That SDD time was so brutal I almost couldn't go on. But I hung around long enough that I learned a lesson which was confirmed to me. SO almost died from SDD, lost a lot of muscle mass, had zero motivation to move or do anything. But the epiphany and confirmation changed everything. So next time winter comes around, I'll be ready for it. I'm going to be happy DESPITE anything that happens around me that may be less than positive or downright traumatic or intolerable. Just remember, happiness is a CHOICE. How good is that? On another note, love that you guys saved Chickens. You really are wonderful human beings. That's why you're one of my favourite KZreadrs. Always do what makes you happy and F the rest! x
