Love your videos about your chickens! I have 4 and I think they are excited for spring! Thought I’d tell you what they eat: crushed corn, layer pellets. And for snacks: vegetables, fruits, oatmeal and honey plus some more. Glad you’re doing good!👍

One thing is with male ducks they often try to mate with chickens..if there is not enough female ducks ( male ducks can kill hens) also a they need oister shell's ( or scrambled eggs with egg shells in ) and grit.

Chickens should have access to calcium separate from their food, you can get oyster shell. The grit is good to help grind the food in their gizzard so we have a separate feeder for grit and oyster shells to free feed on. Our chickens love scratch and mealworms I just throw them on the ground. Ours also get most of our veggie and fruit scraps (they love strawberries)

Yay! Chickens! They look like real sweeties. I am not sure of the breed of your little ones but they do have a game bantam look to them. I am not surprised that they didn't use the dirt bath right away. They can sometimes be a little chicken about trying new things. They will figure it out eventually. Your heatlamps make me a little nervous. I have seen pictures of too many coop fires. Make sure they are really firmly attached. Your duck boys also make me nervous. Chicken and duck... um...reproductive bits...are not compatible and if your guys try to mate with them it could kill them. When I first got my ladies I tried mixing their food and scratch together only to find that those little stinkers will throw food everywhere trying to pick out just the scratch. Now they get food in their feeder and scratch on the ground. Silkies can be prone to all kinds of health issues so my silkies and bantams get a bowl of mash with vitamins added once a week. Also they get black soldier fly larvae or mealworms as a treat to boost their protein a little. I think you are really going to love having chickens.

Silkies are actually pretty winter hardy chickens. They get sick and catch illnesses quickly bc of weak immune systems and over breeding, but they do very well in the cold and suffer more in the summer! When you decide to turn off the heat lamp I would try just moving it closer to the door and then taking it away, so it’s a more gradual change. You can also feed chickens old fashion oats uncooked or cooked. They also love peas and bananas! If you need to deworm them or give them any medicine mash up banana and mix it and they will eat all of it! Ducks especially love bananas! And they float in the water so it’s great for ducklings and encouraging them!

I would also just buy a large bag of layer pellet with 18% or higher protein and add to that! For the ducks add brewers yeast a tablespoon or two every week, ducks need niacin and brewers yeast or nutritional yeast has that. And instead of buying food, calcium, and grit separate just buy oyster shells it is pure calcium and grit! And much cheaper than store bought crushed rocks! Just be careful to not buy medicated food, it has hormones in it that make ducks grow too fast and will hurt their heart. I did a yet long study for 4H on poultry diet and bred show quality silkies and polish for 4 years! I stopped because of the pandemic!

If you can get some poultry netting or are able to safely free range, the chickens would be able to be housed with the ducks since they would have a big enough area to get away from them. And chickens LOVE to free range. I’ve even seen one of ours running around with a frog in its mouth lol they love eating bugs, frogs, sometimes even mice!, and worms. I have about a half acre field that’s fenced and my chickens and goats are together (I put the chicken food in the chicken house at night/early in the evening and lock them up so they can eat). I had ducks all last year with them but after awhile they got so messy since I didn’t have a pond that I had to keep going back outside to refill the goats water. They just weren’t a good fit for here.

You can get the producer prides mini layer pellets. It’s a 40lb bag but pellets are a lot easier for them to eat and less waste. I noticed with crumbles they sneeze a lot more so I just prefer pellets when they get big enough to digest them (chicks of course need crumbles)

They're so cute!!! So exciting getting chickens. :) The two smaller ones remind me of game bantams, but I'm no expert lol. I don't use heat lamps, but I've heard they can (and have) started fires in chicken coops, and if the power goes out, going from warm to cold too quickly could cause shock. Just a heads up to be super cautious with them. I've found that the 2 x 4 roost that you mentioned, laying flat, is actually the perfect roost so they can cover their feet with their bodies on cold nights. :) If you want added heat, I've heard Cozy Coops or Sweeter Heaters are safer than heat lamps because they're radiant heaters, but I don't have any personal experience with them. Tip for the dust bath - if you ever have wood ash laying around, you can put that in there with some sand, dirt, etc. For treats, my ladies love mealworms and come running if it even looks like I might go get the bag, which is not just funny to watch lol, but also super helpful for getting them back in the coop quickly. Chickens are such awesome, quirky little characters and so relaxing and fun. Congrats! :)

And I don’t recommend heat lamps at all! As long as they have a draft free area to roost then they are fine. I never use a heat lamp. A friend January of last year lost his whole herd of goats from a heat lamp. Barn fires are soooooo common from heat lamps. That’s something I never use.

I'm glad you removed the ducks. Male ducks think of only one thing and their junk is not made for chickens and they can seriously hurt and even kill your chickens trying to mate with them. Just keep this in mind in the future.

Also chickens do not need a heat source once fully feathered. Heat lamps in a coop is one of the top killers of whole flocks. Because no matter how good its secured one day it may fail and fall and there goes your flock and coop up in flames. Many chicken groups on fb to learn and many people keep chickens in - degree weather without heat. Not to mention if the power goes out and they are accustomed to heat they could die because they aren't acclimated to the cold. I am a chicken lady if you can't tell haha.
