Meet Melissa Mancuso, MD | Maternal Fetal Medicine | Women's Care

I'm Melissa Mancuso. I'm a maternal fetal medicine and genetics specialist, and I've been practicing since 2011. I did my fellowship at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. I did a combined fellowship in maternal fetal medicine and medical genetics. One of my passions is genetic disorders and the way they affect not only maternal care but fetal care. When I was going through medical school and we were doing our rotations in the hospital, I knew I was drawn to surgery, and I knew I was drawn to the outpatient setting. So OBGYN sort of fit the best. And when I was doing OBGYN, I thought, I love genetics because really, I think the root of everything really, illness, health, it all boils down to genetics. And so, I wanted to find something that could combine my love with genetics, with OB. And so, it just fits perfectly to do maternal fetal medicine and genetics. Maternal fetal medicine, I think, you know, sometimes is a scary place to be because people don't like to be considered high risk. But the way I look at it is that it's a second set of eyes or a second team that's just making sure that we ensure your baby, and you are healthy during pregnancy. When you're referred to maternal fetal medicine, it can be for a multitude of reasons, but usually it's because there's either a maternal condition that puts the pregnancy at higher risk for complications or there's a fetal concern. There could be an ultrasound done that was concerning for a potential birth defect. So, you would come to maternal fetal medicine where we could not only confirm that, but also talk about potential diagnostic testing as well as management during the pregnancy. There are also maternal conditions, such as patients who've had a history of breast cancer or who have high blood pressure or who have diabetes. And so, we're really the internal medicine specialist, so to speak, of pregnancy. We sort of take it all into account and we can manage both mom and baby concerns. I really want patients to know that when they come to see me, they will get my best. And you know, I am committed fully to not only caring for them but for their unborn baby. And I want to make sure that I have a healthy baby and healthy mom. And my family will tell you that I spend a lot of time after hours worrying about patients, checking labs, calling patients. Most people have my cell phone number. So I just really want them to know that they will be well cared for.
