Meet Maiko in Kyoto | Mom is a former maiko

This video is a vlog of a trip to Kyoto by a Japanese family living in Tokyo. Today's video is kind of special. Because I'm taking you back to my home, where I spent time as a maiko geiko. I think that not many people, no matter how many trips they have taken to Japan, have experienced this culture. I have learned many important things in my life in this town called Gion. It is a place that always reminds me of my beginnings.
I can't post info on the maiko place, but the link to the beautiful Ryokan where we stayed is below. I couldn't find their website in English, so here is a link to a blog that someone wrote about it in detail. Please check it out!

Thank you for sharing treasures of Japan while you are teaching Sutan. I have never met a geiko or maiko. I always thought that geiko and maiko have a hard life, busy, working, practice, wearing heavy make-up and wigs, expensive kimono. The maiko do not have time for a boyfriend even though they are young. I hope Japanese people appreciate the sacrifices of maiko and geiko to continue the tradition.

@Tian I can't imagine how busy busy Moe must be every day!! I'm very grateful for the Kimonoko Community that has formed around her KZread, and sharing a sense of Omotenashi おもてなし. Giving hospitality/care to the guest with a pure heart, deeply from the bottom of the heart, with no other thoughts involved. もてなす(motenasu), the verb form of omotenashi, means think about others with a genuine heart and treat them with sincere kindness. (The origin meaning is not well known even to Japanese) When Moe heard it.... Moe said, “when I heard the meaning, I learned that we can make the world a better place if everyone tries to have 'omotenashi' heart."

This is really fascinating. I felt like ppl who work in culture-related career that passed down through generations is totally amazing. They’re the knight of history, working to preserve valuable cultures to next generations. Idk about japan situation but in my country, ppl who working to keeping old cultures be called ‘old school’. It’s not something everyone appreciated and not something that you can make money with. The social perception toward them is different from someone being ‘doctor’ ‘lawyer’ or ‘engineer’.

I missed the great opportunity to live in Japan in the home of traditional family in 1979. My Japanese room mate in a Pension in Paris has introduced me to Tea Ceremony. From that moment on I have fallen with Japan and its refined culture. I wish I could be living in a small town in Japan. I know I would be surrounded by beautiful people like Kimonomom and her most adorable little Sutan. All my life since my Tea Ceremony with Mariko, I have had many kimonos 👘. Arigatou gozaimasu Moe-san for bringing me back so much joy and now after so many years I have dreams again of being in Japan. You remind me of my friend Mariko. You symbolize the best woman of Japan. So refined and intelligent, so beautiful as the Cherry Blossom. Jocelyne Mirambeau 🙏🌷

That must have bought back many happy memories, Moe. It was good to see Moto entering into the spirit of the occasion and Sutan enjoying it all, until the 'all eyes on her' moment. Thank you for showing us a glimpse of your past, Moe. A thoroughly enjoyable vlog. Thank you.

Beaituful video, I especially loved how the Ryokan put in extra thought into the breakfast they offered their guests. The grounds are just beautiful, everything was amazing!
