Oh my!!! I see why Heather fell in love with him! He is soooo completely adorable!!! I love hearing all about him! He is super lucky to have come into your family and is now living his life in happiness and love! What's the average lifespan for degus? Oh goodness I love that his best friend is a stuffed turtle! That is too much!!! ❤️❤️❤️. I definitely want to see more of him and learn more about degus generally! Thanks for a fabulous video!

I'm so glad you liked it Cari!! Yeah, Heather got to give him chin scratches haha so after that you're basically friends for life :P Degus live very similar lifespans to guinea pigs, though depending on breeding, can average between 5-8. I know! He loves that turtle. Before Mr. Turtle, there was Sir, Hedgehog, and he used to drag him into his wheel and nap, it's the funniest thing!

Oh, I know exactly what you mean about Gus living alone. We just have one gerbil, Nutmeg, but she was alone when our neighbor gave her to us. Since she's been alone all her life we think it would just stress her out to introduce her to another gerbil.

I have a rescue degu myself that has to be housed alone. We tried for months to get a proper introduction into our main colony. She even successfully managed to live in the main colony for about 4 months once, but soon as mating season came along it all fell apart. She is now happily housed on her own, but has a divider a few inches from another colony of degus so she can have some interaction without the rather vicious fighting that tends to break out with her.

Gus is gorgeous! I would love some degus in the future =) I like that they are diurnal and that they enjoy having a fuss! Really fun to watch as they're so inquisitive x

Thank you!! I really do recommend degus as pets, they are fabulously entertaining, and they have such wonderful dispositions. I could watch him scamper about for hours lol

Gus is such a sweetie!! When he came for a chin scratch? 😍 I loved hearing his story, I don't know anything about degus but I'd love to learn more about them. That bubbling noise he makes is so cute too!

Thank you! He really is a fascinating little guy, and they are really unique. The bubbling sound is probably my favourite sound any of the critters make, and he'll do it for hours if it's a nice day lol

Aww Gus is so cute! I know he doesn't have the proper cage but you should totally do videos on him. I also have a lone male Degu named Pixel who we got neutered and we are currently looking for two females for him.

He's adorable :) I've got 4 degu ladies living in large homemade cages, I've got some videos on my channel x

Aw thank you!!! Degus need hay all the time (you didn't see any in the video because he'd just been cleaned lol), because like chins it's their primary food and important for their teeth x

Great video, Gus is so cute. What a shame that he has to live on his own. My guinea pig Dylan is the same, he was badly bitten by his brothers (all 7 were kept together!), so now he is scared of boy pigs. Gus seems very happy on his own at least, he is obviously very well looked after. I love the ferret hammock!

Yeah, it's so hard when you KNOW they are supposed to be with someone, but you need to weigh the options about what's actually better for them, and sometimes that means bending the rules a bit. 7 boys together?! Oh gosh, that must have been an intense situation. He's a very happy boy, which we're grateful for, as alternative options are somewhat limited. I love it too! But more importantly lol he LOVES it

The person who had the 7 boars together was told it wouldn't work, but she didn't do anything about it until they fought. Luckily they have all now been rehomed in pairs with experienced owners who can deal with pigs with emotional problems. You are right, the main thing is Gus is happy, sometimes rules have to be bent for the benefit of an individual animal.

Thanks! We were contacted by a person who needed to "get rid" of him. But there are ways of adopting through degu rescues or general rescues, depending on where you are from!

Degus tend to live 6-8 years :)

What a cutie pie. I have 2 girls, a blue and agouti/white. They have a massive cage. Bluebell and Snowflake. Snowflake is such a little chatterbox, Bluebell likes to bark when she hears noises.

it almost sounded like a crazy hammy sound. Hamster can be loud when they want to be. poor little Ruby screamed her head off when I met her, thats why i wanted her lol, and she kept screaming when i first brought her home. now shes quite happy and when we open the cage shes ready to jump out lol

im just gonna keep commenting, there was ONE at my local store and i felt so sorry for it since he/she was all alone. I think someone surrendered it to them ebcause it didnt have a price tag on him. But i was thinking if someone decides to get him/her i bet they wont know him/her needs a friend or two

The Cavy House That's what I'm thinking too! I think it was Evie, she can make the most HORRID sounds if she wants to lol. And that's the problem with pets like degus, guinea pigs and gerbils etc who should have companions, pet stores aren't going to enforce that kind of husbandry, so it allows for a mistake right off the bat, and it just sucks

Your Gus is so adorable!! A lot of people don't understand that the rule book is only a guide and that Degu can still have such unique circumstances that forgo the guide. Clearly, your Degu is incredibly happy and content!! You can just see how he is simply by the way he responds to you ^.^ I am looking towards getting my own Degu, and i'm getting supplies prior to pet shopping - I was wondering if you could tell me where I can perhaps get the quadruple pot thing...

I'm not sure if you take video requests, but if you do, I would like to see how you chin-proof the room Merlin stays in and what room he plays in? I've been trying to find videos on it, to make sure everything is safe, but I can't seem to find any useful ones.

Hi! I can certainly work on that! It will be a few videos down the line, as I have some that are ready to go already, but I will definitely do that! Merlin lives in a massive cage, as we are not in an environment that would be good for free ranging, but I will definitely film how to chin proof the area he plays in :)

i have 2 degus both females i have a big like long but a small in height cage what would you recommend for me because i really want them to be able to climb and i have nothing for them yet but a hide away box that they had with them when i got them and a wheel what cage style do you recommend?

Degus need more floor space than height, it's obviously beneficial to have height as well but floor space should come first!

+Michael Cartlidge actually if you read pretty much any degu related website it'll tell you that degus are naturally climbers and are very jumpy animals. I myself own two and have a cage of three layers 118cm high. honestly to anyone out there this video isn't good. degus should live ONLY IN A pair. as they are a group animal and solely depends on other degus. the reason this degu is allowing petting is simply because he is lonely and desperate for attention.

Zaneta Sokolowska INCORRECT Degus thrive in groups, they don't feel lonely and like to groom eachother, if anything it's sad, imagine there only being 2 of you. Wouldn't you feel lonely? So I don't recommend on you getting Degus as you are not clever in any way, it is not going to kill them or harm them if they live with more then one other degu. So there you are now shut your mouth.

Now I want a degu 😳 lol but Ik I am not prepared for one lol;) maybe in the near future lol

If you get Degu's, definitely get two (the same gender unless one is neutered), because they are colony animals :) I'm so glad you like Gus!

I'm not 100% sure, as I've never had gerbils, but I think 2-3 years?

Meant to ask...do you ever give him dried herbs or forage as a treat/to mix in with hay? I read on www.degutopia.co.uk that it's ok to do that.

Generally no, if I'm being totally honest. There is a lot of debate in the degu community over the reliability of that website these days, unfortunately. And Degu's have some pretty real diet concerns, so simpler is typically better, however lame it may sound. Some of the most up to date degu info is on German forums and whatnot, they're really into their goos lol There is a forage from Bobby's Bunny Boutique that I think he will be able to have once a month or so, which I will be getting. The issue over here is that we really don't have herb mixes and whatnot available, which sucks because lots of critters would benefit from it. I love Chinchillas2shop - it has great stuff! I'm super lucky because my friend runs a Canadian shop that is very similar, so we get to avoid shipping costs :D x

You should read Books BEFORE you buy a Degu! 1. The Cage is way to small 2. Never have one Degu alone! Min. 2 or even more. 3. No Plastic in the Cage, they eat. everything and plastic has nothing to loose in a Degu Cage.

WUZAKING and you my friend should actually LISTEN to what I said in the video. I'm very much aware of how normal degus should be looked after. We had to modify everything for him and is special needs and disabilities :)

You should NOT read books about animal care, most of them has very bad and outdated information (such as keeping rats in 10 gallon tanks or that hamsters can have pine and cedar bedding).
