I first met Dr. Baron in 2009. I told him I did perfectly well with ibuprofen but was up to 4 gm (that’s 800 mg five times a day!) but suspected I would need surgery since that dosage was eating up my stomach. After films and MRI, Dr. Baron had to show me the test to believe the level of pathology. As a practicing neonatologist, opting out was not feasible if I wanted to continue practice. So, on Wednesday, August 9th, he did laminectomy and fusion of L2-S1. The first 24 hrs were rough but not so bad I couldn’t get up and eat breakfast in a chair across the room. Improvement was extremely rapid, even by Dr. Jeff’s USMC background. I wanted to go back to work on Monday (5 days later), but since he took 10 days for his own surgery, he insisted I take off at least that long (after all he couldn’t let some retired US Army grunt show him up!). He saw me for follow up two weeks later without a walker or cane. I was sitting there with a big Cheshire Cat grin lounging comfortably on a regular wooden chair. At that point he confessed he had done similar surgery (fewer vertebrae for both). The first was a professional boxer, the second an Olympic champion skier. They were both completely comfortable at their two week checks, too! I did beautifully for 10 years and then started to experience ASD (associated segment degeneration) at T12-L1 (L1-2 had autofused already). So, as soon as Covid-19 subsides enough for elective surgery, you’d better believe I will be calling on Dr. Jef to fix up for another 10 years. By 82 years old, I’ll probably let the younger men in the family do the heavy lifting! Dr. Marshall Dressel, COL, US Army (Retired). I’m now the co-owner, grounds keeper, handyman, and gardener at Sundara West B&B in Everson, Wa.
