Meet Cordie: A Snapshot of Senior Hunger

Have you ever had air puddin'? Cordie Mathews has when there hasn't been enough food for both her and her great grandkids.
Cordie is a vibrant 73-year-old woman who always has a big smile on her face and makes sure she stops and says hello to every person she passes. She also receives food from one of Second Harvest's feeding partners, the Woodbury Pantry, for her and three great grandkids, and sometimes her neighbors to help make ends meet on their limited and fixed income.
Cordie represents many of the 16,000 Orange County seniors who face food insecurity. Find out how you can help people like Cordie never have to survive on "air puddin'" again at www.FeedHopeNow.org.

It’s so sad. I have elderly neighbors who are too proud to take a handout. I trick them and tell them I made too much dinner because of knowing only how to cook for a large family. I tell them do you want it or should I toss it out. It gives them the upper hand to think they are helping me out.

Great idea. By letting them keep their dignity, they are more apt to accept food, even though they may suspect what you are doing.

Seniors are limited to income because if health problems they can't work. Most receive around 1000 dollars a month and maybe 25 dollars in foodstamps. This are the people that came behind us worked and laborer to support the government, they deserve to be taken care of.

Thank you for sharing your story. That is why we fight so hard against hunger in our community. It is definitely heartbreaking to hear about those who have to go without so their kids can eat. No one should have to go through that.

She ate air pudding so her kids would feel comfortable eating while she didn't..... This is why motherhood is so unique and amazing. Mothers form a *special* bond with the children they carry. This is why women deserve to carry family name, because they carry life. Motherhood is EVERYTHING.

Poor old people have nobody to blame but themselves. They never took the time to get educated about finances. They are in survival mode now because they weren't in survival mode in their 20s and 30s. They didn't care.
