Meet Airbus A400M Atlas: World's Most Advanced Large Military Transport and Tactical Cargo Aircraft

Ғылым және технология

The Airbus A400M Atlas is a larger and more capable option for air forces looking for a heavier military cargo aircraft than the Super Hercules.
The C-130 Hercules has been the legendary heavy lift cargo transport of choice for years in the western air forces. It has been in service since being introduced during the mid-1950s and has seen itself adapted into other roles like the AC-130 Gunship. It is now one of the oldest military aircraft in service. But while it is continuing strong in American service, it is being replaced in Europe with the Airbus A400M Atlas.
The Atlas has been in service since 2013 and is now serving in a range of European air forces. The Americans, on the other hand, have been happy to modernize and adapt the C-130 Hercules. Here is everything you need to know about the Airbus A400M Atlas, the European replacement for the C-130 Hercules.

On a torrid summer day a couple years ago, a Luftwaffe A400M was present at an airshow near where I live. I was interested to view the A400M, as I'd never seen one up close. When I walked up ramp and entered the cargo bay I lurched to a halt: damned if the bay wasn't AIR CONDITIONED!

@@richardlahan7068 I am fully aware of that. However, when the Falklands Crisis blew up the RAF had to lease at enormous cost the Belfasts from the civil operators. I suggest that you look at the range-payload etc statistics that demonstrate how effective the Belfast was and how an advanced engine on it could only make it better. Belfast was a solution ignored, Shorts was badly managed by government ownership and under Bombardier it got better. A Bombardier Belfast development could have been in service 20 plus years ago when this A 400M farce was just starting.

@@ruzicas.5819 "Why Europeans need to depend on US when they can built better and more advanced aircrafts themselves?" Because they apparently don't? You do realise even with the A400M those countries are still using American made C-17 Globemasters or C-5 Galaxy's right? "A400M best and most advanced military cargo aircraft in the world" False, for a new aircraft it is littered with issues i.e. the RAF has been having significant issues with theirs: "[The aircraft are facing an array of corrosion issues]. It’s happening between the electrical connection unions, the hydraulic unions, bolts, brackets. It’s on a lot of it in the undercarriage”." This came from a member of the RAF who even stated they preferred the C130 over the A400M FYI Airbus confirmed these issues to. Regardless the C17 and C5 are better in their own rights, the US also finds the C130 to be good for them until their new cargo plane is selected. "Airbus civil aircrafts- best in the world" Red herring much? last I checked we are talking about military equipment, regardless this is your opinion, it is not a fact, since you like going by "biggest producer and best in the world" that goes to Boeing especially as the Boeing 747 is still the most sold civilian aircraft in the world and the 787 is still more used then what Airbus is selling, and then there is also the new Boeing Transonic wing and 777X. "Airbus helicopters - biggest producer and best in the world" Cool? But we are talking military right? and they definitely aren't even close to best in the world their. The US owns that area and its not even close i.e. Australia hates their Taipan: "The performance of the MRH90 Taipan has been an ongoing and well-documented concern for [the Australian Ministry of Defense], and there has been a significant effort at great expense to try to remediate those issues" i.e. they retired 46 Taipans a decade before they were scheduled to be retired and replaced them with UH-60 Black Hawks. Norway also returned their NH90s because of huge issues i.e. they asked for a refund and instead went with the MH-60 Seahawk. The US (Sikorsky) has made more Black Hawks then all of the other Airbus military helicopters combined i.e. Airbus might be big but they aren't big when it comes to military helicopters, even more Apaches have been built so go away with this stupid bs. "What happened with US aviation? Do they know how to produce something new and good?" F22, F35, F16, F15, F18, B21, B2, C5, C17, Black Hawk, AH-64 Apache, Chinook, V-22 Osprey, etc etc. Then there are the US programs i.e. US’s Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft, NGAD, C-X: Next-Gen Cargo Plane, Future Vertical Lift program, etc etc. You really have no clue what you are talking about mate, the US has multiple programs ongoing, just because you guys finally made a transport plane like the A400M does not make you guys somehow superior at it, it is just a more modern designed plane i.e. the C-130 Hercules is from 1956, finally you guys made something that could replace it kudos it only took you 67 years to do it.

i dont think you can compare it to the ac-130. ac-130 is a powerful gunship. a400m is just a cargo plane, which makes for me the a400m boring

Their first attempt at a dedicated military turboprop, so it was always going to have teething problems. Its already vastly more capable today than it was even 5 years ago

This aircraft is utterly useless......... it requires a SOFTWARE upload and rebooT to switch from one task to another......... !!!!!! think about that........ if youre needing to re-task whilst airborne,,,,,,,,,it hass to land and be powered down,,,,,,THEN SOFTWARE UPDATED !!! before it can be used in a different profile!!!!!!!!! STUPID BEYOND BELIEF!!!! ( As an aside.,,,,,,, lets hope the "new" software isnt corrupted (m assumming its available!!) as an enemy...... all you hve to do is interfere with either the arrival of the software from another country!!!!!,,,,,,,,or corrupt it via espionage,,,,, bribery or industrial espionage,,,,,,, lets face facts..... someone in the design stage made this a reality to have the ability to prevent a 3rd party operating the 400m if it suited THEIR agenda,,,,,,,,,,,,,now WHO or WHICH country could that be???????hhhhmmmm.

Yeah this isn't true. It doesn't need a different software install every time role changes are carried out, and those are done on the ground. You can't change the equipment fitted down the back mid-sortie.

If only it was as reliable, dependable and could fulfil the special forces capabilities of the C-130J…….shame it isn’t 🫢

It's getting there. It's a brand new clean sheet design, which always take time to mature. Compared to even 5 years ago, it's vastly more capable. The real issue isn't the aircraft, but the willingness of customers to pay for capability trials.

What do you mean ? The c130 is 65y old, is technologically outdated and smaller than the A400M

@@xara7152 I think you’re getting yourself confused with the fact that versions of aircraft get updated during their 65 year lives. I.e. new avionics, structural updates, new engines, longer body, modifications, etc………
