Hello, I am conducting a project on managed realignment for a class. How do you calculate the amount you need to breach for a coastal area?

What a great question 😉 I would send that to the Environment Agency or Coastal Partners who calculate those areas and make those decisions. Ultimately nature is unpredictable to a degree though so it is never a perfect science.

As you are probably aware, this scheme failed on the 7/4/24 when the high tide smashed around the western rock berm and flooded across the undefended sea embankment to seriously flood Medmerry Caravan Park, with similar damage to West Sands Park in Selsey. The EA renaged on their commitment to "hold the line" east and west of the breach and the plan failed in epic style.
