This medley of two hapa haole songs (Hawaiian style music with English words) is the backdrop to tell the story of the romantic days gone by in Hawaii Nei. Song of Old Hawaii was written by Gordon Beecher and Johnny Noble in 1938. Born in Maryland, Beecher arranged many songs with Hawaii born composer Johnny Noble. Both contributed to the hapa haole style of music while introducing Hawaiian music to the world.
Lovely Hula Hands was written by R. Alex Anderson in 1940. Born in Hawaii in 1884, Anderson was at a party when he saw a hula girl dancing in the middle of the room and started thinking about a song. While on a cruise in New Zealand watching gulls in the back of the ship, the song’s line “gliding like the gulls over the ocean” came to him. The song Lovely Hula Hands became a hit, one of Anderson’s many hits in his lifetime.
