Medical Stories - Recurrent Pericarditis: Nancy's Story

According to the National Institute of Health, acute pericarditis is the most frequent among pericardial syndromes and accounts for about 5% of all emergency department admissions for acute chest pain.
In this episode of Medical Stories, we travel to North Carolina, where we join Nancy, a retired engineer, whose love for athletic travel and adventure was curtailed by doctors’ orders to cut back on exercise after she suffered severe pain in her chest. Nancy was diagnosed with recurrent pericarditis, a rare disease characterized by recurrent episodes of inflammation of the pericardium, which is the sac containing the heart.
Featuring renowned expert: Dr. Allan Klein, Director of Cardiovascular Imaging Research at the Cleveland Clinic.

I just want to say how glad I am you are on the mend. Currently going through this and its recurrent episodes. Like you it has taken its toll on my health as I was an avid runner prior to my first episode. Thank you for sharing your story.

Interesting, I’m a 30 year old electrical engineer who has had recurrent pericarditis since I was 23. I’ve had probably 7-8 episodes total and they seem to be getting somewhat worse in severity and seem to be lasting longer in duration with each new episode. I’m concerned about developing constrictive pericarditis as my pericardium calcifies more and more with each new episode. I’d love to visit the Cleveland clinic and see the best heart specialists around and explore different options for my situation. Thanks for sharing your story Nancy.
