I agree. There is build up. And while I do think pacing is odd and the adaptation sorta jumbles things around. I think the slow burn world building is doing a good job.

It is not about the immediate gains, it is the opposite. Remember that the power structures here are different than what you are assuming. Him becoming more popular in the human realm with certainly make the shitty goddess notice her more and will probably get in his way in his every waking moment. He need to balance out his infamy in where he can be safe from the goddess's influence, demon's manipulations, and hyuman's heirarchy all at the same time while protecting the his important demi-humans and achieving his personal objectives.

In season two, they skipped plot points on the weird laws the goddess made, one of which led to many girls trying to use him for his money as the world he isekai'd to has a weird business-only arranged marriage system where girls can use this to leach off all his money, steal his fame, and basically NTR him as these girls think he is too ugly to officially marry and want his money(None of the main heroines just random girls who approach him). He freaked out and avoided them before they could use him. So you are correct. From my understanding, the plot for this season is to set up his anger at the unjust systems of the world he isekai'd to and to set up character and world-building.

Agreed. I think the writing is fine. I do have some complaints on certain areas of focus from the adaptation that left out a few important bits from the manga/light novels, but I can gloss over that. For those paying attention you see a build up Makoto dealing with crap. Isi it excellent world building? Anime wise I'd say there is some work as the focus of certain characters for too long affects pacing and flow but we have nice paced build up that isn't too fast and not really slow (like DBZ slow). But it is still a good anime. As long as the anime doesn't rush then I'm fine.

Makoto feels like Rimuru, if Rimuru ever became 100% fed up. Like, not just a massive spike of anger and/or hatred at an army of humans attacking his town, destroying them to ascend to full Demon Lord status, but outright _apathy_ towards humans. If Rimuru were like Makoto, I could see a point in time where a human delegation shows up to accuse him of "letting" humans die in the forest of Jura, with Rimuru's response being "Did they stay on the clearly marked and paved road? No? They left the highly visible, safe, and well-patrolled trading route we built in order to fight giant hell-ants? That's not my problem. Tell your citizens not to be idiots; there's a reason we sequestered those ants in a corner like that." And that's why I love Makoto. He's like Rimuru, but his vengeance is smaller, softer, but much more devastating and long-lasting. He doesn't _just_ wipe out an army and then make plans to turn a country into a puppet-state. Nah, he's gone full guilty-until-proven-useful (not innocent, _useful),_ a callous pragmatism that is delicious to watch.

If there weren't the circumstances/rules of the world forcing his hand and people like Raphtalia pushing him to be better I feel like he would slip into Makoto's mindset quite easily, maybe a bit more involved and less apathic but that's balanced out by him being a lot more petty and vengeful.

He even explicitly said he wanted them to be saved if it seemed like they were on the verge of losing. He is the type that holds apathy to most people unless he bonds with them. Once he bonds with them and they show no intention of trying to exploit him, you have someone that will burn cities for you. The issue is... that he *will* burn cities if it means it saves you. Consumer Review Fairness Act. This law makes it so companies cannot manipulate reviews to only be positive, people must have the ability to share their honest opinions. From MY understanding of the video I think many viewers are upset with the sudden, very morally grey and selfish actions of the MC. I've only seen season 1 but to me it looked like the MC 100% could have prevented more lives from being lost. Viewers expected the MC to be better which could be caused by the author generally portraying him better OR the viewers expected too much. I'm not surprised this happened because the hyumans and goddess are portrayed to be bad so relatively speaking the MC looks better by default BUT the newer scenes clarify he's ALSO not a great person driven by morals. Personally I thought the series was mid. Nothing particularly interested me or felt new so it's just another dime-a-dozen series to me which is why I wasn't compelled to watch season 2. Even bad shows I'll usually finish them and those are at least memorable unlike shows like this to me.

Frankly, half the fun of the show is waiting for him to snap and put the jerks he’s dealing with in their place. It’s also important to remember that this is a high schooler who doesn’t really grasp how powerful he’s become in this setting. This is a kid struggling with levels of power and responsibility he’s not experienced enough to handle well. Seeing him hit his limit and begin to pull back from reflexively playing the hero was quite satisfying. It felt like real character development.

People seem to think Makoto is All Might or something. 1. Bro can't be everywhere at once, and 2. even if he could this is on the goddess from beginning to end. She's the one that forced him to come there as a 'hero', rejected him outright, threw him to the literal edge of the world, then summons a couple new 'heroes' and goes "yeah go save the world" without any real guidance on HOW they're supposed to do that. So, nah, Makoto has no responsibility to save anyone, and the deaths are on the goddess.

What's interesting about the bit about the headmaster demanding a part-time teacher do more, is that it reminds me of an element from another story I was reading recently. In that story, "runners" (basically freelance couriers) get a lot of flack for not running headfirst into danger to deliver supplies to adventurers who didn't pack enough potions or whatever. They get disparaged for being unwilling to take difficult or dangerous tasks for a standard delivery fee. But... these people aren't adventurers. They're just people who didn't have skills that could get them better employment, so they do deliveries for a living. Usually just running letters from one town to another. Insulting them for being unwilling to run into dangerous territory to deliver potions is the equivalent of yelling at a BAKER for not doing their part to clear the road of bandits.

The more time passes, the greater his influence becomes and the more he's convinced to maintain neutrality. The developments up until now has been carefully setting the stage to make this about Makoto's relationship with the other world. He's been put in a position to carefully observe and react to every faction in the world, and all these factions have been pushed into a position to firmly decide how they want to handle the mysterious being known as Makoto Mutsumi. Let's be completely honest, Makoto is no saint. Let's make a list. 1. He only saved Emma because he was starved for companionship. 2. He only helped the orcs because they fed him. 3. He only formed the contract with the Shin because he thought it would be nice to have her as transportation. 4. His main motivation for helping Toa was that she looked like his old classmate whom he rejected and made cry. 5. He only helped to cure the Rembrandts because he knew an alchemist who could make the medicine and he wanted connections for his business. 6. He only befriended the Wood Ogres because he needed the ambrosia flowers. 7. He only contracted the Lich because he wanted someone to teach him magic. 8. He only became an instructor at the Academy to get permission to start a shop without getting mixed up in politics. Most of his actions that have driven the plot are self serving. Is it convenient to him or not? Even in this episode, he only helped the VIPs get to safety because it would boost his reputation at Tomoe's suggestion. In this very episode he asked Shiki if there was any way to help turn the mutants back, because doing so would make them look good especially since the mutant in question was royalty. But upon learning that it would be difficult and lacking incentive, he quelled the thought because the risk greatly outweighed the reward. He's not evil for these things, he's just a dude that's trying to make things work.

Any changes happening to him is because he's slowly losing his will to care the way his old world wants him to. (Hell, he barely cares about those rules regardless. It was in his direct interest to save as much life as possible, and with his resources, he could have done so to a much higher degree while still remaining largely anonymous. Trade and more-so individual consumerism thrives when the local populace can live relatively peacefully and stable. Massive loss of life will lead to a huge blow to the local economy for a while. especially non-essential goods and services. Its always easier to pick apart a characters decisions in hindsight, but from the characters' perspective, and in their shoes... I doubt I would have done half as well as Mak ended up doing.

I get that he's lost all sympathy for hyumans, and rightfully so. But still, I think that he's always sorta helped others and done 'good' deeds for them for the sake of gaining their favor. And in that case, him standing around makes no sense. He didn't even try to save that mutated noble his students were fighting? Or try to protect those purple robed academy fighters? He would have earned way more brownie points from both the royalty and academy if he'd at least tried to do those things. Then more people would have been indebted to him, which I think is something he's clearly shown an interest in doing.

He was already told that first one wasn't happening. He asked if they could change him back and the answer was that it wasn't possible. The Purple Robes however were neither his fault, nor his problem. They showed up and were supposedly capable of handling the problem. They were literally the Academy's A team. He had no way of knowing they'd be weaker than his own students and by the time he learned that...they were dead. They didn't even last two minutes, so he wasn't saving them unless he immediately intervened himself and he wasn't going to seeing as he'd been betrayed by this very group of people not one time but twice in as many hours.

the thing about makato is he is true neutral to nutraul good, "I'm on nobody's side cause nobody is on my side" vibes. plus, he is still helping after getting shit on by people he was playing nice with. his followers are looking after and advising him though and are making pretty reasonable suggestions the he feels ok taking.

  • @GenerationZ313

I'm willing to bet it will end with the rematch and Makoto going off to conquer land for himself, which is a little disappointing as we may not get to see him meet the other heroes but given the uneven pacing it's not impossible. That said it going to suck when this season ends because while a few other shows in it's genre have managed to get more than 2 seasons, it's practically a coin toss as to whether we will get another one for this show.

Though there are a lot of cut content like they just on the spot explained how he knew the people in the red light district as well as that cat guy. in the manga he helped that cat guy get some medicine that's been plaguing his people in the slums but no hyuman were willing to sell. And according to a small explanation that cat and his people were to become the espionage and information network for the Kuzonoha company. And the perception of he isn't doing anything he explained to the king in the beginning that he would be coordinating evacuation efforts, he won't be (temporarily) engaging with the mutants but only safeguarding evacuation of the citizens with his people. By the next episode it looks like he would begin the extermination.

I totally agree that season 2 started off trying to add context and world-building to the story since season 1 (much like many stories) left things ambiguous, foreshadowed deeper future plot points, and alluded to future conflicts. It’s kind of just the way things go with stories where you are going to have troughs and crests. I haven’t loved season 2 but I have liked it and it makes me look forward to the action that is guaranteed to come in the future

The problem isn't that Makoto sits around, it's that the show itself focuses too much on side characters that means nothing, meanwhile teasing plot points that never pay off. Like, the thing with the Heroes. They both meet best girls, but not Makoto, who is essentially the Goddess' last resort, and the interaction we want to see. But instead, we get a bunch of whiny episodes about them being weak, then transition to more whiny episodes about the students being weak. And when the story does heat up, there's no risk involved. Like right now with the mutated monsters. They're busting up the city, but we know they're no threat, and ultimately will probably be forgotten about a few episodes from now. And, when Makoto finally does actually fight, it against something lackluster, like a damn bear.

dude, if you think the heroes are side points that dont pay off... boy are you in for a surprise. both heroes have massive importance in the story. the whole reason he was forced to fight the dragon slayer was because of the heroes in the first place. not only that, but, they are vital for the plot of the story.

The entire point is that they aren't side characters. They were supposed to be introduced in season one, but they were cut specifically because they didn't expect to get a second season and they want things exciting. The entire point of them needing to flashback to get everyone up to date was because the Heroes are plot essential and needed to now be patched into the narrative.

I haven't kept up with the Anime, so my knowledge of the events is only up to episode 11, because that's where the Manga is. I've got to say though, Makoto has been unmotivated to help people he's not connected to for a while. Makoto has two motivations when it comes to people dying, he doesn't want anyone who matters to him to die, and he doesn't want to kill anyone if he can help it. We've known about this "Not my problem" attitude of his since he killed the adventurers that caused the problems in the pocket dimension. He was brutal as fuck, but then started crying afterward because killing them didn't make anything better, nobody learned anything, nothing was brought back, the pain just spread further.

I believe season 1 pre-first ring explosion would have rushed around trying to save people as he was a lot more pro-hyuman. I think one of the problems is that his troubles don’t seem big in comparison to people like the shield hero, or ainz, who meet some seriously nasty characters. Because his troubles don’t seem big people will assume his big heart will forgive and move on without a problem. The regeneration scene is a showing of the inner workings of this anime. Any other anime may very well have let him become a hidden knight and support the female hero, and give him a redemption and cure, and all that other stuff. Fudge they even let you think that’s what’s going to happen for a bit… before mio says “no, die”. And that sets the tone, this isn’t grimdark like ainz but it also isn’t happy like rimuru,it’s more like goblin slayer minus the risky bits.

Relatable. While I agree that the driving of expectations via portrayal could have been better as a misalignment with audience expectation can be rough... That said it's also frustrating when the expectation of a series is too fixated from whatever stereotypes there is unrelated to the series. I haven't gone far with Tsukimichi yet but... Like, Eminence in Shadow for example. It has an MC whose very obviously from the start morally grey and outright says he admires forces from the shadows but people expect him to be batman... which annoys me a lot because he doesn't effing want to be batman! It's just random KZreadrs spouting that up and now everyone who watches thinks that instead of trying to watch & understand the show. He wants to be the guy behind the scenes, it doesn't have to be a hero! H.Y.D.R.A., Akatsuki, Darth Vader, Aizen, even batman's enemies like Ra's A Gul & league of shadows & such, and whatever shadowy villain also works for him and he's not against that whatsoever. The only thing stopping him is his own standards (like not killing others he sees pitiful or not disrespecting other people's ideals/dreams) in place of the morality he long left behind as for him those (common sense, morality, etc) are fat to trim from what's truly important for him. Though to be fair the anime may not portray what his standards is best, but it surely did say he abandons all "baggage" for his dreams. He quiet literally, in a matter-of-fact manner, monologues how he's aware he is apathetic, chooses to do so, and even if half the world population is suddenly gone he won't bat an eye, but if something he considers most important is slighted then he'll be pissed. Everyone, he effing has no intention whatsoever to be batman!
