    What's interesting is that this movie came out during the mid 80s when Disney was at their low point since after Black Cauldron failed after it's release, this was one of the few animated movies that scared Disney so much to the point where they started to begin their Renaissance era in 1989 starting with The Little Mermaid, since Disney was really trying to improve with their animated films seeing how other studios were capturing the Disney feel more than Disney was.

    That and also while it is not politically correct to say anything positive about America now, I would say that it is a step up from the pogroms of the Russian Empire. And of course in the late 19th century America was a step up from much of Europe, especially Southern and Eastern Europe. Of course, the American dream now is to move to Europe where there are absolutely no cats and the streets really are paved with cheese.

    An American Tail takes place in 1885 and Fievel is about seven (1878 birth year). He'd be 61 by the time the Nazis invaded Poland so he'd be too old for servoce.

    ikr? Literally nothing of An American Tail ripped off Maus, they both tell completely different stories in different events. The only similarity between both stories is they both feature mice and cats in a historical setting of back in the day? In that logic, people might as well say Finding Nemo ripped off the Little Mermaid because they both feature the sea underwater. Twisted logic.

    @@poppie267 Unfortunately, that can't be said nowadays though. An American Tail is becoming very under-appreciated these days and it's not given the love and respect it deserves in recent times. Which is insane because An American Tail is a really great film and is genuinely not only some of the best Don Bluth films, but also some of the best animated films as a whole. Even Don Bluth fans(The community you expect to see An American Tail get the love and attention) barely talks about An American Tail at all. Oh sure, you see see they talk about Secret of NIMH, Land Before Time, All Dog go to Heaven, Anastasia, and even Titan AE a lot. And how they keep making essays how underrated NIMH and Anastasia are all the time, but An American Tail? Next to nothing unfortunately. Yeah, I know what's the true Don Bluth's under-appreciated classic is. The answer is An American Tail.

This coming from even myself who loves Fievel Goes West for what it is, it's not as great as the original An American Tail and I do highly prefer the original when it comes with both of these films. Like, to be totally honest, I know how you feel. It does get pretty annoying lot of people only bring up Fievel Goes West when talking about a An American Tail film. Like there's more to this franchise than just Fievel Goes West. You and me are one of the only people I know who gives appreciation and recognition towards the original An American Tail.

I hear praises of Secret of NIMH, Land Before Time and All Dogs go to Heaven, and Anastatia all the time by Bluth fans and animation fans in general, but An American Tail is normally treated left in the dust for some odd reason.

    5:07 That wasn't in the original version. That's from the 2004 DVD release. For some stupid reason this remastered version includes extra sound effects as well as rerecorded dialogue in certain scenes that sound worse than the original version.

    _You know this will only deal with the cats directly bothering you_ And thus the sequels happen. In all seriousness I do want to see your opinion of the main antagonist of Fievel Goes West because while is a villain cat, he’s also more nuanced as a villain.

  • @retrofan4963

    @retrofan4963

    It's also worth noting that the video to direct sequels of An American Tail addresses the situation of mice living free and harmony without worrying about the cats after the mice won against the Mott Street Maulers cat gang from the original An American Tail. In the video to direct sequels( AAT 3 and 4), mice form a security gate making sure the cats don't bother the mice, that's why in AAT 3: Treasure of Manhattan Island, the cats aren't the situation and aren't the main villains this time around, instead the main villains are the racist rats factory owners, and in AAT 4: Mystery of the Night Monster, the new villain cats Twitch and his gang try to get around their barrier of the security gate by negotiating with a poodle name Madame Mousey to kidnap the mice for the cats since she also hates mice as well. So in the video to direct sequels of An American Tail, the mice did do something about making sure cats won't directly bother em after defeating one particular gang in the first film. Interestingly, An American Tail 3 did imply that Fievel Goes West is all a dream, either that or it forshadows the events of Fievel Goes West and Fievel's American Tails soon take place in a nearby future taking place after An American Tail 4.

    I think my only real problem with this film is that a lot of scenes after Fievel falls off the ship and ends up in New York and the end where he is reunited with his family, felt more like filler than anything. (Especially with the montages where he walks around town and keeps mistaking things for his family) I know people criticize The Land Before Time for having filler as well but at least some interesting stuff happens as well.

  • @retrofan4963

    @retrofan4963

    3 ай бұрын

    I wouldn't say they're filler. The scenes where Fievel mistaken his family for something else serves a purpose. It shows how much Fievel is going through while on his journey to find his family. The whole point of Fievel's journey is to show no matter the hardships and cruelty you're going through, don't give up and keep going of what you're looking for. Fievel still being resilient to continue looking for his family despite being teased quite a lot serves that point and succeed making it an emotional experience. not to mention everything Fievel stumbles upon through his journey serves a social commentary of the experience of America through immigration, including the subplot of mice fighting the cats for freedom. There isn't much filler in this film in comparison to the Land Before Time.

    An American Tail 3 actually feels like an actual successor of the original An American Tail and actually continues the themes of the original, same with An American Tail 4 as well. Fievel Goes West on the other hand feels more like it's trying to be a remake of the original An American Tail, while making it more lighthearted/comedic, with a added western scenario.

    Based on how Tiger form his bond in strong friendship with Fievel, I'll say the reason Tiger joining the Mott Street Maulers cat gang is due to various circumstances Tiger is facing himself. For all we know, Tiger may join due to for honoring his family to get a job of killing mice despite deep down Tiger secretly likes mice as friends and he wouldn't want to hurt em, but for the sake of impressing his cat kind and making his family proud(despite losing them), he joins anyway. Thus, he treats more as a job rather than what he actually wants to do. There can also be cases where Mott Street Maulers is the only job Tiger can find and since Tiger did establish that he is a lonely cat who would love to make friends, it's clear he also joins to try to be friends with these cats, but the thing is that the rest of Mott Street Maulers cat gang don't respect Tiger and treat him like he's an idiot, including Warren T. himself, which Tiger confirms he can't stand Warren anyway. Unlike the villain cats, Fievel treats Tiger with respect and forms bond with him for who he is, thus making Tiger realize as a wake up call he doesn't need the Mott Street Maulers anymore since he actually found an actual genuine great friend and doesn't need to pretend for what he actually isn't. Which is why when Warren fired Tiger, he's actually glad since he actually feels free, finally can express who he really is and wants to do.
