MED 11-stud head conversion, A-Series engine

Converting from nine head studs to 11 is an essential modification when preparing a high performance A-Series engine.
We keep ARP head studs for both applications: www.med-enginee...

Helicoils can be used to give the hole a lot more strength over just a tapped hole, it also gives you the opportunity to change it if there is a lot of wear. I can imagine they used helicoils because of this. Love the videos! I’m a mini fan and was a machinist myself, so your videos are so great to watch for me.

wow at 1:23 a real 970cc in the flesh, only ever seen one off hand built ones, that engine is like rocking horse manure.

Thanks for the great video`s I was told the front stud was to pull the block up to the head but I have never seen a problem with the front leaking other than the oil feed hole can slightly leak. Mike Owen

So MED, how much to carry out this modification please. And yes i have a 7 Port head to fit requiring 11 studs.

So now that you made a 11 stud block. What’s the best why to make a 11 stud head I have a 12g1316 head that I would convert to 11 stud

Measure and drill - bit more straightforward than the block as there's no threads to tap.

I drilled the extra two holes by using an existing 11 stud head as a template.

I too would be interested in seeing a head being drilled for 11 studs. would be curious to see how you locate it, and machine the surface on the head for the head stud nut

Drill and tap block and the get 2 bolts cut heads off bolts . Machine to a point on one end screw into block at the 11 stut holes keep tje machined point just above block put the head on give a tap with a hammer each end and there you are a centre pop each end now all you have to do is drill. Some people lol

@@chrismorris5608 Think you simplified that a little.... While what you say basically has merit, there are a few things you forgot to factor in. Firstly how do you drill and tap the block for 11 head studs if you don't have an 11 head stud hole head? If you had an 11 head stud head you wouldn't need to drill and tap it for the extra two head holes would you. So the first step would be to beg, borrow or steal a genuine 11 hole head (you don't want to pattern off a head someone guessed at). Then drill and tap as shown in this video. Then meticulously make sure the bolts you sharpen to a points that is dead centre. Perhaps a lathe to make sure they are perfectly centre. Now that you have two perfectly sharp and centered marking bolts, you need to ensure that the head is sitting perfectly in the right spot before you attempt to give it a marking tap. So you are probably going to need to put every head stud in the block to minimise movement, and on top of that use a method like the one shown in this video to ensure absolutely minimal movement. Now you are ready to give the head a tap with the hammer. Half ass it and the same results will follow.

@@DodgyBrothersEngineering well i was just trying to make things simple for people and you make it sound hard! I was an engine builder for 15 years too much info is a bad thing for some people and i dont feel the need to go into anything so deeply lve been in loads of ford mags worked at brands hatch building the race school engines in the late 90s but who cares now i would rather go on holiday to usa twice a year but still have 8k worth of mac and snap on i have not touched in 14 years lol. Thank for the chat mate its been very retro.

Why don't you just get bigger head studs, you drill out the hole then retread it

Fitting a helicoil stronger than just drilling / tapping into cast iron.
