    Brilliant idea and product! The use of the cam is reminiscant of the old mechanical automatons! Much simpler than using 24 micro linear actuators and simpler sequencing! The cutouts are very precise, almost like EDM! Well done!

    Your clock looks so clean :) Using magnets to pull back the segments is a really neat idea. Stating the obvious, it’s not very legible but I don’t think that was what you were going for. That’s fine, there’s a trade off people are willing to make between looks and practicality which even changes depending on their situation. This is neumorphism in real life and I like how it looks. Mechanical noises aside (which can be reduced), this is a more subtle way to tell time - like the Sun moving across the sky - that still has the precision of a digital clock.

    Just paint the walls of each segment, they'll stand out from the surface surprisingly well as each wall is exposed, only visually confusing in very specific lighting conditions.

  • @SireSquish

    @SireSquish

    Perhaps using one of those variably refringent paints - like chameleon paint for cars. The different angle of incidence would make the protruding segments more distinct. OR, alternatively, have a backlight and opaque paint on the segments and face - then the light shines through the exposed walls.

    I could imagine an 18th century digit clock with a seven-segment display using a spring and pendulum to drive the cam in the first SSD with the cam in each unit driving the next unit. An all-mechnical version might even have been possible in ancient Rome, except that they didn't have the Arabic numerals or the concept of zero.

    No question it could be done, and cam-driven digital displays are older than you might think - they go back to the early 1900s. Flip-card clocks could be entirely mechanical (and they were in the beginning, search on "plato clock"), but the ones you see are motor driven at least. I really like how compact the mechanism is in this clock.

    That’s so cool! Proposed legibility improvement: If each segment were a series of thin panels attached to a back plate in the shape of the segment, the edges of the panels could still match the color of the front of the display and sit flush when retracted, but the sides could be blackened, absorbing light and creating more contrast when extended.
