I think you could integrate robotics with machine vision, in which machine learning and AI could be applied to process the image, extract characteristics and train the vision model.

Absolutely! AI & machine learning are excellent new tools in mechatronics engineering. I use them extensively for my research at UW in assistive technology (e.g., wheelchairs, prosthetics, exoskeletons) and continue to see penetration into more engineering processes and techniques.
