One thing I love about Mecha Sonic's character in SMBZ is that unlike his Sonic 3 & Knuckles counterpart, he is an actual threat instead of a robot that just jumps around and dashes from left to the right and just standing only to let you hit him without even fighting back

It's hard to explain, but the mecha sonic from sonic smackdown was heavily inspired by Mark Hayne's rendition of mecha sonic in his SMBZ series, which is a sprite animation series. The SMBZ mecha sonic is inspired by Cooler from dbz and fulgore from killer instinct.
