Measuring the Refractive Index of Glass using a Michelson Interferometer, PHYS 382

There are plenty of descriptions of the measurement of the refractive index of a gas using a Michelson interferometer. But what about a solid? So, I tried measuring the refractive index of a slide of transparent solid material by rotating the sample in a Michelson interferometer. This video describes a little theory, the experiment, and the MATLAB function needed to analyze the results.

Beautiful! Thank you so much... how would you do this for a liquid? hehe

I suppose that I would approach the analysis in a similar manner. I would try to use a rectangular container for the liquid, with the container made out of a known material of known index (otherwise there would be two unknown materials). As the sample rotates, the liquid of unknown index is becoming thicker as is the clear solid of known index that contains the liquid. Without actually working out the problem, I can only speculate that it has a solution.
