It is a good exclusive guide for discovering how to repair your electronic items minus the normal expense. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my old buddy Taylor finally got excellent success with it.

This is a great video if you have never really used a meter before. I appreciate you going over the basics!

Good work on this tutorial! A lot of tutorials spend time describing what a resistor does or what resistance is, but you got to the point quickly and only pointed out the importance of having no current flowing through the resistor. That is an important thing that some people might no know, but is very relevant to your tutorial. My color vision isn't great, so reading those tiny bands is basically pointless for me, so this tutorial told me what I needed to know. Thanks!

Be careful NOT to touch the tips of the probes when measuring resistance. It will affect the measurement. Your fingers have fats and salt water on them, so the resistance through the probes (when just touching them together) should be about 0.3-0.4 ohms when they are 'uncontaminated" A value above 1 ohm is too high. Also when measuring components, be careful not to "smudge" both ends of them with Your fingers while measuring. This too will affect the result. Use some plastlina or TackIt to hold the component(s) in place so You can measure without touching. Otherwise this tutorial is good. Do not measure resistance in components or parts of a circuit while it is live and turned on. Unhook the component(s) before measuring, and be sure that all capacitors have been discharged before measuring ohms.

We create parallel resistance by fingers, aproximatly at our body has 3-6 x100 kOhms. by such type measurment is not true

Can you measure a resistor when it is still connected to a circuit (a motherboard) and the circuit is powered off?

So what does it mean when my resistance starts at (setting on 2k) 1.65ohms then immediately drops to . 002 then 001 then 000?

I am trying measure ohms of fuse relays in my car. Do i need to pull the relays and check where they plug into the box, or remove an check the relay? I figured both. The battery is disconnected btw.

The electrons flow (-) to (+) but I guess it doesn't matter too much in the case of the resistor since you can place it on either side of the appliance/load in a circuit and the resistor will do its job.

If your circuit had a switch could you measure the resistance simply by switching off or do you need to de-solder if its in a component?

Peter Gamston you must disconnect at least one lead from the circuit before measuring the resistance.

What reading does my meter has to be on to measure a resistance for 360-440 ohms pulse generator for my motorcycle?

i gotta ask ! 1 why cant you do it whilst its in circuit ? and 2 what difference if you did do it ir circuit then what difference would having it read whilst voltage flowing or no voltage? also ....do you think it would make any difference if you made very short probe wires what for measuring resistance? ps great vid !!

My meter has a flashing dash on the screen when I have it set to resistance and I’m touch the two probes two each other or measuring resistance on anything.

i have the same meter as your using, but how do you read a resistor at the other settings like 200k or 2000k or 20k what do they mean ?

In most circuits, negatively charged electrons move from negative to positive. However, "current" is defined in terms of positive charges, so it flows from positive to negative. Ben Franklin named the charges + and - back in the 1700s. However, the negatively charged electron was not discovered until the beginning of the 20th century , long after the convention of positive current was established by physicists and engineers. So the definition of current relies on a "flow" of fictional positive charges. It's equivalent in math is adding 2 positive numbers is equivalent to subtracting a negative number.

My multimeter is weird I have the wires in the right place (EX) black=com Red=the one right above that and it shows negative. YES IM AM PUTTING THEM IN THE RIGHT PLACE, my question is should I be worrying about it?

You only used 1 resistor and you only used the scale at the bottom of the ohm meter. Would have been nice to hear you explain the difference of the other values on the scale.

Can resistance be measured with pins in a connector? Like for a car. Need to measure resistance for the chassis and comfort networks. And tbh I have no idea how that's done lol

When I measure ohm by fluke, it starts with a big number then goes down to a number. Why it does that? (e.g starts with 315.7 ohm then decrement down to 150 ohm)

Hello teacher i have a question suppose the bettery is 220 volts AC ; and resistor 220 kΩ (220 000 Ohm); bulb is ME current = voltage/resistance 220/220 000 = 0.001 amps ( 1 milliamps) if my math righ so i think, i don't get electrocuted because 0.001 amps is low current flowing through me thank you very much

Hey i know that you can measure cold ohms. But for warm ohm ? Is there an instrument for that ? Cus you cant measure cold ohm in a motor Or the new led lamps..... Only resistors and verry old lamp. And thats like it......

Let say i want to test resister of 4.7k ohm then i have to set a scale to 20k right? What will happen if i set the scale wrong? will it break my multimeter? I'm very new to electronics.

I learned to always check the baseline of my multi-meter before testing ohms of any circuit. Each use.. each day.., or more often the better. It's done by selecting the setting you may need and first verifying the infifnite reading (looking at the meter while test probes are apart.. touching nothing) vs the closed circuit reading (looking at the meter while test probes are constantly and steadily touching). I think of that as checking my multi-meter's baseline. The video was showing that very clearly. The perfect ideal is a meter with 0 or as small of a value as possible for a baseline with closed circuit. But often it doesn't always happen to be perfect. I've found this same thing in my own collection of multi-meters. Sometimes the meter's battery is too weak or getting a poor connection, other times its a temperature issue.. Battery's power levels are weaker while very cold, or the components inside the meter are likely to change while they are colder or hotter, many times the contacts in the switch of the meter have a slight bit of corrosion, and whether one of these or a combination is the cause... that's all it takes to affect the baseline of the ohms meter. I have some older analog types of multi-meters that have an ajustment knob on the front that is for adjusting the meter to "fine tune" its closed circuit baseline. I've peeked inside some digital multi-meters and spotted inside some have variable resistors. I suspect these are for the use of the manfacturer's to set the baseline of the meter and or other fine tuning requirements that must be set at prior to final inspection and assembly. Great video. I hope my observations and comments helps.

guillermo canchan No, you must disconnect one or both leads of the resistor you wish to measure. Even if you turn power off, there are other paths thru the circuit that your meter will measure. So you must isolate the device from the circuit.

You can treat a fuse like a low-value resistor. Ideally it should be close to 0 ohms. If the fuse is blown it will display an over-range (“1 .”) or blank on the meter

At 2:46, you say "You cannot measure the resistance of a live circuit" -- why?

Because you will damage your test equipment.

The meter reads all over on the thing I'm testing and then stabilizes at a low readin, this thing should have about 23ohms but it's reading .0135 ....

What’s purpose of measuring ohms/resistance?

The wires alone should get zero resistance but I have multiple of these meters and sometimes they connections to the meters them selves are not good so press down on the connection on the meter or change the batteries if I don't get a zero for resistance on the wires are but more than likely it's simply because the wire connections are not tight to the micrometer

Why can't you take the ohm reading when there's volts through it?

The meter measures resistance by applying a very small voltage across the resistor and measuring the current through it. You cannot measure the current through the resistor without disconnecting it. If you try to measure the resistor in a live circuit, there is already an applied voltage and current flowing, so resistance will not be properly measured.

I’m assuming you’re using conventional theory for how electrons flow? Electricians use electron theory where electrons flow from negative to positive.

what if i'm reading over 200? If I set it to 20k to get a reading and it says 9.8 what are the ohms? Thats an impartant BASIC detail left out.

I'm wondering the same thing, is it 9.8 Thousand (9,800)or just 9.8? I get no reading on the 200 but on the 20k I get 2.2 ohms which makes no sense, if it's 2.2 why isn't it working on the 20 setting!

Ok I figured it out I'm pretty sure, 9.8 on the thousand (20k) setting then it is in thousands so 9.8 thousand is 9,800 ohms.

You do not need to remove the device from the circuit . Just one end and it makes no difference which end. Good video otherwise!

Shoaib Sh The resistor is marked as 22 ohms with a tolerance of 5%. So any value from 20.9 to 23.1 is within spec. The meter and probes have about 2 ohms additional resistance

I am measuring ohms on a sensor that requires 4.0 ohms. If my multimeter also puts out 2.0 ohms resistance on its own, then the correct reading I'm looking for would be 6.0 ohms?

Doesn't current flow from the negative end to the positive end and not the other way around? You say that it flows from the positive to the negative but that doesn't seem correct.

You are correct, but physicists, electricians and engineers consider current to flow from positive to negative. This follows a convention established by the esteemed Benjamin Franklin (yes, $100 bill guy). Old Ben identified 2 opposite types of charge but did not know that it is actually negative electrons that travel from negative terminal to positive terminal. Electrons weren't identified until the turn of the 20th century. So we think of fictitious "positive charges" flowing + to - instead of negative charges going - to +. Resulting charge flow is the same. Sort of like subtracting negative numbers is the same as adding positive numbers.

All multitesters I have seen have a fuse. usually 10 AMPs if that is the max capacity of the meter.
