I have a plushie of Kirby that’s pretty much exactly that height, so I have a physical frame of reference. Every time I need to measure something, I just imagine Kirby next to it. One meter? I can't do metric, imperial is so simple and easy to understand. Everything being the same with a different prefix to denote size is just madness I will never be able to put my head around. Plus you would just cause total chaos on the streets, people would be guessing at what speed to go if signs became metric. They aren't gonna buy new cars will use old ones with imperial speedometers.

    @ThatBeePerson

    @@domehammer 2 things 1: Even if you don't want to memorize what the prefixes mean, really all you have to memorize is the order, in everyday life most people just use millimeters, centimeters, meters, and kilometers because thats usually enough. Same with weight, ect 2: just buy a new speedometer instead of a new car lmao Really the biggest hurdle would be converting from Fahrenheit to Celsius since thats one of the few imperial system numbers that'll actually be ingrained in people's heads, a lot of thermostats and ovens here in Canada STILL use Fahrenheit despite us being a metric country. Most Americans I've met who swapped over to metric have described it as "surprisingly smooth" It's not learning a new language, it's just learning to count to 10 again

    2:46 Fun fact about that Air Canada flight: They found out about their low fuel situation mid-air, and like most people, went to the manual to see what to do. However, the writers of that manual just kinda... never included what to do when your plane has no fuel. They were then directed to another airport, but realized they didn't have enough fuel to get there. Fortunately, the pilot knew of an abandoned airstrip, and tried landing there. However, turns out that the airstrip had been converted. Into a drag racing strip. Where currently. There is a drag race going on. Fortunately, the plane was able to land, despite the fact that the front landing gear didn't lock in place and went back into the plane, it actually caused the plane to lower on the ground, and the friction helped stop the plane, so yay!

    I mean America uses metric for international affairs (science, business, etc.) just not locally Besides that's changing too, just slowly, "inch by inch" if you will Additionally when you tell someone to do something they're quite unlikely to listen, this isn't an American trait, it's a human trait, the only reason I listen and try to use both is because no one told me too, I just learned in in school Plus it's not exactly easy for me, sure conversions are easy, but to me I don't have a good idea what a Kg feels like, what a km looks like Life is more than just raw data, it's also how the brain uses that data (addionally the only downside is that metric is unnatural and must be taught, since humans are wired to count, measure and perceive in multiples, not units, this is likely evolutionary because oh what's the difference between 51 and 50 wolves, well not much But 1 or 2 wolves is either bad or 100% worse) One of the biggest annoyances about metric harkers is that they completely forgot that science tells us why the US is taking so long, give us time and be nicer and it'll probably happen sooner

  • @theundeadgentleman4998

    @theundeadgentleman4998

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Sip_Dhit "addionally the only downside is that metric is unnatural and must be taught..." I don't know if you're aware but you were taught how imperial works as well, people don't slide out of the womb with the innate knowledge of how many inches go into a foot go into a yard go into a mile, if you're talking about what's easier to understand then I'd say multiples of ten are comparatively pretty simple to get your head around. Remarks like that are part of why people make fun of Americans that defend imperial in the first place; they're seemingly born entirely out of the fact you know one system because it was taught to you in grade school and barely even knew what the other system was until you were a teenager at the earliest, of course you think imperial is more intuitive (the other part that gets them mocked is that they're usually much more obnoxious at getting their point across because differing opinions on arbitrary systems make people extremely defensive). Like, I can even empathise with your struggle to visualise and convert from imperial to metric naturally; I grew up in a household that uses feet and stone despite living in a country that entirely uses metric, but even then metric is _leagues_ easier to grasp because you literally only need to learn one unit and you can convert it up and down by shifting the decimal point, it's not remotely "unnatural" (or at least no less natural than any other system of measurement).

    When you’re from a country that uses metric but almost everyone you know uses what I think is imperial to measure height so whenever you google someone’s height and it doesn’t say like 5’7 or something you have to convert cm to feet to get a good mental image and understanding of their height.

    oh yeah and i have to do this conversion almost daily too since we like to nerd out about animals and everyone else uses imperial so when my mind hears that an anteater is 7'2 feet in length it creates a fucking huge anteater then i remember feet is dumb convert and it's a normal 2,2 meters in length still very big but not stupid big
