Meaning, The Self Destruct Button - Teal Swan -

In this ingenious video by Teal Swan she explores meaning and how we destroy ourselves and other people with it. Meaning is the key to unlocking the understanding of suffering. drawing conclusion and attaching meaning to things is a way to get through to our own suffering as children and how we overlay meaning onto new situations that we treat as old.

"What am I making this mean?" "Separate out the event that actually happened from the meaning that you assigned to that event, and then question the meaning that you assigned to that event." "Question your meaning instead of assuming it." She takes such deeply rooted human issues and breaks it down until it's so simple. I love this woman

Literally watching this an instant breakthrough as to why I have hard time letting things go. Everything a pet died when I was younger I'd think "why does everything I care about get taken from me?" I hold onto material things to fill that void and keep people at arms lengths in my heart to protect myself. I feel that wall around my heart melting as I start to cry and type this out. Now that I see it I can let go and be more open. I thank you for your videos!

This was essentially the biggest tool I used for recovering from anorexia. Questioning what I was making everything mean forced me to see where I had created all this pain in my reality, and it gave me the sense of power that I could create new, more positive better feeling meaning out of all of the things that had happened and would happen in my life. Total game changer!

The foundation of our self- perception is formed in early childhood. If we're lucky, we have parents who give us enough *love* to equip us with the understanding that their- and others- negative reactions in certain situations are momentary and related to the event, not their basic and entire view of us.

ON point, Teal. Placing meaning on an emotional experience is totally ok, but if the rest our lives are shaped by only that one interpretation, we are locked in a tiny box. I think this is where critical thinking comes in.

Nice! I used to wear those glasses because of things my father said/done when I was young. However, as both adults, we communicated and communicated until we both reached mutual understanding. My father was in the military, and when I was young, he was experiencing the most stressful time in his career. He has ptsd because of (which he's working to release). My father always loved me. He just couldn't channel his stress. I forgave him and he forgave me.

Love ain't as easy as saying "I love you", because that can be a partial truth or a lie. But I don't think love needs to be all pure fairytale either. For some, love seems easy, but I never understood love, not how it forms, not how it goes. Only after watching Teal's videos I kinda get what love is. Kinda.

This lesson is so so so so important, I wish she had extended it and given a multitude of examples. Understanding this concept can pull you out of the depths of depression. You have to give every challenging situation a positive meaning. When you feel bad about a situation, it is not the situation that is making you feel bad, but the meaning you have given the situation. Tony Robbins does a good job of explaining this in most of his videos. But I like how straight forward and simple Teal made this. Instead of interpreting the meaning of what someone does or says to you and then drowning in anger and hurt because you feel they meant you harm, just ask them their intention. I like that :)

I used to work for someone who did some relationship counseling. I would sometimes get calls from clients describing something the other one said or did and then they would say the other one was thinking such and such. And then they would use that to assign some meaning to it. I was amazed at how much people read into so little and with no real information or basis for doing so. The meanings assigned do not always make sense and would lead to insecurity, anger etc.

I am in therapy because of how my parents raised me. I often try to find meaning in why my parents did things like: My mom wanted me to be just like her, because she had a bad childhood and it was almost a way to get a second chance. My mom often becomes frustrated and starts yelling, because her parents never listend to her and she wants to be heared. Is this the same as seeking meaning?

Once in awhile I am draw to watch one of your videos, and every time I discover something special. I want to thank you for this one, as I have found something that is helping me so much! As per your advice, I have been asking myself, "What meaning am I giving this?" when I find myself in a situation that is being interpreted as negative, and it instantly removes the filters! In that moment it becomes easy to see that it is merely my ego, desperate to give meaning to each and every experience---that's what it does! And it does a damn good job at doing it, which is a good thing, because the ego is a vital part of our human existence! But this little trick allows me to move my awareness out of my ego and into my heart, where I can experience the present moment without filters. It's really amazing. While I have lived by the knowing that it is the meaning we give to experience that matters, I have had a hard time putting that into practice with the 'little' things. 'Big' things are easy in that there is so much to work with in terms of flipping it and finding the silver lining. But little things--personal things--like what someone says or doesn't say; what someone does or doesn't do have been a source of struggle for me. I have been working on acceptance, but realize I have been attempting to do that from the awareness of my ego (with all it's filters). Moving my awareness into my heart brings instant acceptance, and the little things don't matter so much. They stop being personal, and I am able to be at peace with the situation. Thank you so much for this wonderful, little trick!

Thanks for the reminder of how much MEANING I bring to the event. Great talk , great advice. I knew a guy whose neighbors hated him cause they always heard him hollering at his elderly mother, but the truth was she was almost totally deaf and he had to yell at her for her to hear him. He told me he was ALWAYS hollering at her just to have a simple conversation. The neighbors assigned their own meaning to that event. :)

Teal, thanks for making this video. I assure you, this is the first of many videos I will watch. I totally understood the wisdom given in this video. However, when you suggested people were responsible for the positive and negative feelings they feel because they decide the meaning they assign to both. I found myself assigning the meaning to what you said as being if you thinking even a person who is victimized chooses to feel victimized. However, as soon as I assigned that meaning I knew it was wrong. I hope as I watch your videos I discover what wisdom you have to offer that helps me to deal with the experience that made me assign the initial meaning I find unfair to others and unhealthy to me.

Robert Wright, author of "Why Buddhism Is True", referred to meaning as "essence". We put meaning/essence to events as Teal has explained, as well as to material things, and people. It is like the amount of energy or value we do or do not place on things, and the kind of essence we assign to things can be positive or negative. Basically it's all an illusion, and a construct of the mind and feelings that we personally assign or place on/to things that give those things specific meaning. And we all know those "essence" which can cause a large range of emotions, will eventually guide or even control our lives.
