Me VS My Dometic RV Refrigerator, Replacing My Thermistor

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today, I fight with the Dometic refrigerator in our RV to get it to stop freezing everything we put inside of it. My weapon of choice? Some inexpensive 20 gauge beading and jewelry wire & masking tape that I had laying around.

Wow props 👏🏼 you got it Done and that's exactly how you can run that thermistor. The other way I do it is to cut the thermistor removing the connector that connects to the board and tape the new thermistor tip to the old thermistor and fish it thro that way. But good job your awesome.. Im a Rv technician by the way....

Lawren, thank you so much for posting this video. The craft wire idea was a life saver. We did not have wire but, we did have fishing line. You were right. The hardest thing was opening the black box. Again, thank you!! By the way, I think it is so fun to watch a fashion designer fix a fridge. I love the men of this world. They are beyond awesome. Honestly, they have my deepest respect and admiration. Our world would come to a screeching halt without them!!!! Seriously!!! I watched all their videos. They pulled out all the tools and cool gadgets. The snip, cut, splice, and rejoin. They are in their element with their tools. I understand what they were doing but I just kept looking for something easier, then I saw you. My husband and son were so funny. They could not understand how simple it was. They were ready to dismantle everything. I was at work and walked them through the whole process. My son is more like me. He is looking for simple so I had Dad give him the phone. Even my husband told me to contact you to thank you for your help.

That’s so clever! I have the exact fridge and couldn’t imagine how to replace the thermistor exactly because it’s wired through the back somehow. The way you threaded it through is super smart.

Thank you! These are very helpful and concise instructions for changing this thermistor. This method will preserve the seals around the new thermistor. Clipping the wires on the new thermistor to reuse the old harness will allow moisture to travel up the cable into the thermistor's housing and degrade its life.

Great Video! When the thermistor is unplugged or the wire is cut the motherboard goes into "bypass mode". "Bypass mode" causes the fridge to run wide open all the time. That's why it was too cold! There was no temp regulation at all! I didn't see anything "janky" at all.

You should get rid of any absorption refrigerator. Fire hazard. I know from experience. The chemicals leaked from the coils in the back and destroyed wiring that ran along the floor at the back of the fridge, shorting out the wiring. The fire totaled my 40-foot Country Coach diesel pusher. The RV ceiling turns into a broiler in a hot minute. My unit was working just fine until it wasn't. Also, the "normal" heat in back often results in charred wood usually noticed only when the fridge is taken out.

I'll keep you posted if that does the trick I have a feeling it will.

I forgot to update I replaced a thermistor exactly are you staying and it worked wonderfully my refrigerator isn't freezing everything anymore. I found a good way to set the thermostat I got a govee Bluetooth Wireless thermometer and now I can monitor the to the temperature on my phone and able to keep it as close to freezing as possible without it actually freezing.

Thank you! Ours kept freezing everything, so I ordered a thermistor. We taped the new one to the end of the old one from the outside, and were able to pull it up in through the fridge. Just a little wiggling with a screw driver when the taped section got up to the hole, and it went right through. The neighboring camper thought we were all that. 😂

very good video! I have the same issue of too cold in frig. my cord was not cut off however. won't the new cord go through into the frig from the back without the extra wire you used? I'm out camping now. I'm wondering how long it took you, since my frig is full I want to do this fast. if I unplug from 30 amp and put my coach batteries on store, will that be sufficient to block electric while I'm doing it? good job! I'm always thrilled when I see a women do these things. gives me confidence that I can do it also then. not to mention the money we save also as you said.

  • @lawrencappelletti

Thank you! Yep! That’s actually what I would do. I would most likely unplug from the back, cut the part off that plugs in so it fits through the hole (the hole inside of my fridge was just big enough to get the cord through), then I would line the cord up with the new thermistor, tape them together, carefully/slowly pull through from inside the fridge & then plug the new one into the motherboard from outside. Not an expert, but just my two cents. I also tried to wait until my fridge was more on the empty side, but from start to finish (including my overthinking & taking photos) I would say it took me about 30-45 minutes. I unplugged and turned everything off just to be on the safe side. I really hope this was helpful; I always feel like if I’m comfortable giving it a shot, I’ll try to fix what I can myself. Some of the prices and turnaround times to get things fixed are NUTS.
