The L2 and Synapse do it for me. I agree the L2 has the best tone and is an original. The Synapse (Which I own) comes close. My Synapse is one of my favorite basses in my collection. I have the 5 string version, I wanted to change the pre-amp on it but since its connected to the pizio pickup it not an easy task. And you're right its a little on the thicker side of things since to body is made out of wood. I have the L2 on my list to get. I also have the XT I was going to mod it, but never got around to it. Since I got the Synapse I don't touch it that much.

Are these good to learn on because of the smaller size?

I would love to give those basses, magical features. But in this case I would say no. They are smaller in size, but still full scale basses.
