Finally freeze frame for DVR.... MDocumentary is legend!

Matt, love your style in this really excellent startup guide for mDocumentary. You make it easy to begin using all the features right away, including many combinations of effects. I have a number of MotionVFX products for Resolve but I can see I will be using this one the most often and, lucky for me, I do have the DVR Studio ver so thanks for including the Magic Mask feature in some of your tips! Lots of good examples in this tutorial- Thank you!

Loving these tutorials. This is soooooooo much more helpful than the tuts (often silent) on other prominent VFX download sites. The M-Installer is brilliant....finally able to just buy something and set it to install in the same way for each new download from one place. So much less hassle!

Man, I wish the freeze frame could be controlled directly in the inspector. Going to fusion and linking up all those channels is cumbersome.

Love this pack and already bought a second one from MotionVFX. While using the timeline mDocumentary Year I noticed that there are no controls to adjust the text? The other timeline options have it? I cannot change it in Fusion either? Am I missing something?

I just bought this preset 2 days ago, please make another preset like effects on VOX channel or Jhon Harris channel

Hey Matt, at 2:51, you talked about the Compostite Mode for the LUT. I'm running the "latest" version of DVR (or so it says, which is telling me 18.1.4) and your little flyout graphic says 18.5? I don't see Composite Mode when I right-click on the node. Would love to try that out!

This was added in the new beta version. But you can do the same thing if you add a layer mixer and apply your node to the bottom node, then right click the mixer and choose color. Here's a video to explain what I mean: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hp-YyNulYbrYj7w.html

Hey Matt, yes, I found that link shortly after my comment on your video! That works great and just what I needed (except it seems the top mode doesn't have a "job" in that scenario from what I can tell?). Either way, yes, that works fine!

​@@skysavvydrone yeah, if it's set to normal it won't do anything unless you adjust the bottom node's alpha (either with a mask, qualifier, key, etc...) think of it like layers on the edit page. Just like stacking a clip over another and changing the composite mode in the inspector. But on the color page, the layer mix is upsidedown.

@@MattMcCool0 Ah, so the bottom node (the one that is getting the LUT) is actually being viewed as the top node in the stack order? I'm still getting acclimated to nodes, and except for the good'ole "Serial" node, I am just starting to explore the different node types and the use cases for each. This is really helpful and thank you! This trick seems necessary for applying LUTs vs. what I was doing. I was dropping the LUT onto a serial node and 9x out of 10, it looked horrible and would hijack all my corrections that came before the LUT. Then I'd turn the gain down of the LUT. I've watched numerous videos advising that this is not the way to apply LUTs, but there are many videos out here on KZread that still push that approach. Thank you again, Matt!

Hi Matt I’ve got quite a no of motion vfx for my resolve, some issue I face is sometimes the fushion base transition or effects can be slow and heavy. I love this mdocummentary and thinking of getting it but just wanna check will it be heavy n slow. I’m using a M1 MacBook pro 13 inch first version. Any input will be very appreciated. Hey there, thanks for checking out the video! A lot of Fusion-built effects can be a little slow, especially when you stack multiple effects together or edit in 4K, for example. We always aim to optimize our packs as much as possible without sacrificing quality but we can't defy the inherent limitations of Resolve itself. I would recommend enabling your render cache (under playback menu). I usually set mine to "User" and in my project settings I enable "Auto cache transitions in user mode". As for adjustment clips with Fusion effects applied, I find caching the Fusion effect filter to be unreliable at times - caching the color output seems to work better for adjustment clips. I've even set a shortcut to cache color output. And against common advice, I personally enable "use render cached images" on the delivery page (under Advanced Settings) so that my renders are super quick. If you plan on doing this, I would also recommend setting your render cache format to a finishing codec like ProRes 4444. This will create enormous files but good news is clearing render cache from old projects just became a lot easier in Resolve 18.5 (see Patrick's video for more info: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ap-DkrKhhbndg5c.html) So, I wouldn't expect any Fusion effects to playback in real time until significant improvements are made to Fusion, although I will say this pack is one of mVFX's best and it's worth the cache 🤩

He has created some effects for MotionVFX and has done some tutorials for them. Recently he has posted several videos on "Do this first..." and "Make this change to cache..." which address your exact issue. Final delivery rendering is not the issue, playback while editing is the issue- Patrick explains several settings to change. Good luck.

@@MattMcCool0 Thanks for greatly improving my answer to AT about this issue as I seldom know what I'm talking about. Really. Your additional comment on caching for color with adj clips is OMH (over my head) as well as setting up a shortcut to invoke it. Do you have a reference where you have explained this for beginners?

I'm curious as to how to adjust the speed of an effect. For example, the date animation goes by toooo fast in my eye and i'd like it to play a little bit slower. On FCP you have a slider for it but how do I do it on Resolve?

We don’t have such control in Date preset, but you can put the effect inside the compound clip and retime it as a regular clip, or use Fusion for more complex stretching.

Hi MotionVFX, Im trying to figure out how to replace the text in the typography for example, the dates/times? Is that possible or is it just a preset with a fixed text?

All of those things are published, some as regular text inputs, some as a number slider (i.e. years carousel) - if some parameters are missing, just let our support know and we'll update that - Bart from MotionVFX

Will some of these effects work in vertical format? Are they automatically reoriented or do I need to manually transform them?

All effects should adjust fine for vertical projects on default. Single things could need some manual adjustments but that’s a minority:)

Hi @motionvfx ! I have currently a issue with DVR 18.5 b5 : the mdocumentary freeze frame is making my life harder. The magic mask in fusion page doesn't want to render a freezed frame anymore and say "WARNING! Render Did not complete" so i need to use polygon masking or make a fusion clip with two same clip with one masked in colorpage in front. Did you spot this issue on M1 Silicon chip ? - THANK YOU :)

I had the same issue, but I guess I made it worked. Before I tracked it, I changed the time proxy resolution from 1/4 to full. This is under ''Play''

How is it that your playback isn't lagging when you use the freeze frame? I've tried everything and I still haven't found a fix!

In this tutorial, I ended up masking with a polygon+matte control, which is lighter than using magic mask. You can also cache the effect for smooth playback.

Is it possible to use keyframes? I Want to animate my tittles Little bit faster but some reason I can't. Thanks for the answer.
