Pavel Georgievich Bryusov was born on January 23, 1938 in Nizhny Tagil in the family of an aircraft designer (nephew of the Russian poet V.Ya. Bryusov). In 1961 he graduated from a secondary school (Russian) in Lvov and entered the medical faculty of the Lvov State Medical Institute. The first student work and the first operations were performed in a student scientific circle under the guidance of Professor G.G. Karavanov. After graduating from the institute, he was drafted into the ranks of the Soviet Army and sent to the Far East, which for a long time violated his plans to master the then-nascent thoracic surgery. He served as a senior doctor of the regiment, but spent every vacation for 6 years at the clinic of thoracic surgery of the Military Medical Academy. S.M. Kirov.
In the period 1968-1970. studied in clinical residency at the Department of Hospital Surgery of the Military Medical Academy named after. S.M.Kirov, mastering thoracic operations. In 1968, he was included in the medical teams that performed, under the leadership of the Chief Surgeon of the USSR Ministry of Defense, Professor A.A. Vishnevsky, the first two heart transplants and a lung transplant in the country. But in 1970, at the insistence of the Minister of Health of the USSR, a team of transplantologists of the Military Medical Academy named after. S.M. Kirova was disbanded, and P.G. Bryusov, after completing his residency, was sent to Moscow to the GVKG im. N.N. Burdenko. In residency, he collected material for a Ph.D. thesis and successfully defended it in 1973 (supervisor - Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences I.S. Kolesnikov).
In 1985, he was appointed chief oncologist of the hospital and began to widely use extended and combined operations for locally advanced cancer, and also made lymphadenectomy according to I.S. Kolesnikov a mandatory condition for oncological surgery. In 1986, he mastered all operations on the esophagus and began to widely promote resection of the esophagus with simultaneous plastic surgery of its gastric tube (Lewis-Davydov operation) for cancer. In the same 1986 he defended his doctoral dissertation "Massive blood loss in surgery" (consultant - Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences V.S. Savelyev), in which he first substantiated the theory of the dependence of the body's compensation mechanisms during shock and blood loss on the amount of oxygen debt.
In 1987 he became the chief surgeon of the hospital, deputy chief surgeon of the USSR Ministry of Defense. The tasks of active development of reconstructive surgery have become topical due to the large influx of wounded from Afghanistan, which required the performance of complex, often multi-stage operations.
In 1989, he was appointed chief surgeon of the USSR Ministry of Defense and in this position became the last (sixth) chief surgeon of the USSR Ministry of Defense, the successor to the famous domestic military field surgeons (N.N. Burdenko, N.N. Elansky, A.A. .Vishnevsky, K.M. Lisitsyn, E.A. Nechaev).
In 1991, he was awarded the academic title of professor at the Department of Military Surgery, in 1994 - the honorary title of Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation.
In 1997, P.G. Bryusov was awarded the State Prize of the Russian Federation "For the development and implementation of modern concepts for the treatment of severe concomitant chest injury and its complications" (co-authored).
He has 30 years of experience in the departmental work. He was the head of the Department of Military Field Surgery Military Medical. faculty at the CIUV (1990-1993), head of the Department of Surgery at the RMAPO (1994-1998), head of the Department of Oncology (2001-2009) and again head of the Department of Surgery of the State Institute of Medical Education of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation (2010-2011). In 2011-2015 - Professor of the Department of Military Field Surgery of the Institute for the Improvement of Doctors of the MUNCC named after. P.V. Mandryka of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, since 2015 - Professor of the Department of Surgery of Emergency Conditions and Oncology of the branch of the Military Medical Academy named after. S.M. Kirov. He created a national school of military field surgeons, trained 52 candidates of medical sciences and 11 doctors of sciences. For a series of works on military field surgery and active international activities in 2002, he was awarded the International Prize for Military Field Surgery named after. M. DeBakey (USA).
Professor Bryusov P.G. also does a lot of social work. In 2015, he created the section of military field surgery of the Russian Society of Surgeons and was elected its chairman.
