Pretty comprehensive video and I was in a similar situation having interviewed both MD and DO. Finishing up my first year at a DO school now. I too had an interest in PT way early on, was a college athlete, and personal trainer for a while so when I went on my interviews and really had a chance to learn even more about the osteopathic philosophy, that's when it made sense that DO was where I needed to be. I came into medical school with interest in MSK heavy specialties like PM&R (and some interventional subspecialties in PM&R), Ortho, and FM/OMM so definitely felt that calling to be at an osteopathic medical school!

I graduated M.D. in 1978 trained as a general and later vascular surgeon. Served 30 yrs in USN and also did 11 yrs in private practice in a high end city (Santa Monica, CA) I was unfamiliar with D.O. when I applied to med school in 1972 ( pre-internet world). In my years in practice I never have seen any difference at all in allopathic or my osteopathic colleagues in as far as their practice, education or ability to render great and compassionate care to patients. I always felt fortunate while deployed (OIF.OEF) to have the OMT "tool" available for some challenging Marines with serious soft tissue issues. I would recommend any pre med seriously invest in D.O. med school apps while applying to allopathic schools also. If accepted to a D.O. med school one should go and get your enthusiasm, motivation and desire to practice medicine in gear and don't look back wasting precious time. Get in gear and start living your dream and passion.. I am retired now but would do it all over again if needed. Best profession there is.

Thanks for the explanation. I've never understood anything about DOs but have been treated by a few over the years. They had a pretty similar yet distinct personality versus the MDs I've had. All the DOs seemed like down-to-earth people who really enjoyed their work and life in general. They actually smiled sometimes. The MDs I've had come across as very serious, rushed, and somewhat unhappy or perhaps bored with what they're doing. I think you'll fit in better in the DO community.

I am an incoming OMS-1 and am so glad I chose the DO route!! Thank you for representing us and setting the record straight. It is quite sad that some premeds discriminate against the DO path. Getting into medical school is not easy by any means. If you have the option to choose between MD and DO, awesome! Honestly, at the end of the day, you will be a doctor that is there to care for your patients and that is all that matters.

I had been accepted into multiple programs, both MD and DO. I always wanted to be a small town country doctor so for me the DO route was a better fit.
