We had a P1 at the shop I work at for a photo shoot. The attention to detail on this car is amazing. Everything on this car is looks exquisite. No flaws in the carbon fiber. Fit and finish is really next level, from interior to bodywork. The car, whether you like the styling or not, is a work of art. I work on exotic cars for a living and I have to admit, this is one of the most finely detailed cars I've seen.

Seriously, this particular P1 has been through everything. It's got the license plates "PI OOV" and I've seen it here, on Top Gear, and in official races.

SuperStar O looks a lot worse in person and very underwhelming the first time i saw one. Just hasnt grown on me alomg with every other current mclaren .

In case anyone missed it, Sutcliffe drove both the LaFerrari, 918 and the P1 and concluded that the P1 is the greatest supercar of all time.

I think koenigsegg agera R still beat this car. You should see when the agera do full braking without touching the steering wheel.

Well done Steve back on top form. What a phenomenal car though. My two cents:- LaFerrari - fastest straight line speed and best sound. 918- Most comfortable, epic car, but unfortunately overshadowed by the competition. P1- Better and faster at absolutely everything else. The new benchmark has been set.

your opinion. I see the P1 and LaFe as classic cars with a hint of future technologies, however the 918 is the Future, now. and in the real world what matters way more then 600 kg of downforce is the torque. now check the torque figures and tell me again about performance :)

Good to hear from some 918 fans here. I still think the original comments are still inline. There have been some tests between P1 and 918 WS. Do notice I say WS model. I have yet to see a comparison with normal model vs P1. The 918 does have more grip but oversteer is always part of it's DNA because of AWD. It's great to see 918 WS very competitive with P1 regardless. The track models are needed due to lack of grip in RWD platforms. 918 Torque can be sent to the front wheels. P1 and LaFerrari don't have that option. The Engineers are clearly being held back. Look at the RWD torque numbers for comparison both are cut to around 664. P1 GTR has been reported to have 738 ft-lbs or 1000NMs.So torque numbers are inline with 918 at the rear.918 front motor provides about 200ft-lbs more. I do assume Ferrari XX will be very similar. Track models provide a testing ground for upgrades and future models. The track only models clearly reinforce the original comments.

McLaren already did the lap on the nordschleife but they refuse to give us the time. They sold all P1s so why dont they just show it? Is it because the 918 has less performence but still did better on the track or what is the reason? I really don't get it.

8 years on, this car still impresses. This is why the P1 is one of my favorite cars

The P1 is an absolute jewel of a machine. The performance is mind-boggling. But it doesn't look very nice and the interior isn't very nice. To be honest, I would get a 918, you get the performance, luxury, good looks, fuel economy and ride quality.

If you are looking for a Hybrid with this so called great interior. The new Lamborghini Asterion has what you are looking for in a car. No tests yet but they claim a better fuel economy and more hybrid options then the 918. Hopefully Asterion gets the green for production.

The design of the P1 in real life is outright insane! Seriously pictures and videos does not do justice to it. Also the car is sold out and it would take another 20 years for a brand new hypercar to roll out of McLaren. Though my all time favourite will always be the F1 LM edition.

Andres .C if I was in cave I wouldn't have messaged you like this buddhu Bandar, I know the proceedings but FIA first announced that by 2020 all f1 cars should meet expected norms ,they gave the time till 2020 becuse lot of low budget manufacturers could develop their engines as well by the time

7:08 is the time where this road test actually goes on the road... I also think that while he is talking about the car being in track mode, around the track, it is actually in sport mode. The wing is not high enough to be in track mode.

In what way does this even come close to stepping forward on the 918? in terms of outright performance sure it is slightly faster in most circumstances but in any other measure I dont believe it does. The 918 gets 67mpg while still being just as fast if not faster than the P1 in most circumstances. Another Ignorant comment on youtube.

Huxxy 918 p1 and laferrari round nurburgring . That would be a dream race . The laferrari would be dead last and the 918 would be the fastest . The 4 wheel drive 4 wheel steer would see to that . The ferrari is purely for show and is pretentious . The p1 and 918 are both real drivers cars

Yes, C. Harris knows how to make love with cars. It's really a great car, but the sound and design aren't sexy like Ferrari's to me :-)

I also wonder how many hours they had the car standing still at the charger to recharge the batteries :) I appreciate the technology they put into the car but if one was to take it to a track day then the batteries would probably be dead pretty fast - I'm just guessing but McLaren themselves said that the benchmark for the batteries was for them to last 1 lap of Nürburgring Nordscleife. I realise that the car will still drive but it is hardly a 900 hp car without the electric engine and the characteristics of the throttle response would also be completely altered with the torque filler gone.

I dont'know how many lock-to-lock turns it takes in these super-cars, but I can assure you that on a 4 turns lock-to-lock steering system the paddles on the wheel are annoying: once your steering wheel is turned you have to think very hard about which paddle to pull, and that's not always possible exiting a fast corner.

Peter Panhead Gimme an example of a 918 catching fire then... Many supercar manufacturers have had issues like that in the past, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Lotus. Shit happens with high performance engines. This is a wonderful piece of engineering that I would dearly love to own. The same can be said for its two main rivals, the 918 and the "the Ferrari". Anyone arguing about which is better without having driven them clearly doesn't understand the concept of subjective preference. Good day all.

One thing that annoys me more than anything is when people try to compare these cars to the tuned up 1,000 hp gallardos and GTRs. This is in a different league.

Jay Leno tested a 918 & tested a P1, he bought the P1, if you like the P1 check out his review he talks you through how it works

When he gives it the berries at around 8:08 you can really see how rapidly the shrubs at the side of the road start going past him fricking insane.

In the Motortrend test the 918 did the quarter mile in 10.0 sec. Haha P1.

It depends on what do you mean ''performance''.Koeningsegg can accelerate faster on straight line and it can beat any car in a drag race.But in a real race or on a race track he cannot beat LaFerrari or P1.Plus it has 300 bhp more than McLaren and 250 more from Ferrari its normal to be faster on a straight line.McLaren and Ferrari are more agile and they can turn better so overall no-one right now (street legal) can beat them on a race track.Straight lines drag races are for useless fat boys who can only put their foot on the pedal and accelerate. Veyron used to be super quick but its a fat elephant even a Fiat 500 can turn on corners better than Veyron

John marsh, the ring time for the p1, is that official? Or is that what the so called insiders are saying. My insider tells me the 918 slowed down drasticaly at the end of its ring lap. So I don't put too much stock into these so called lap times. I also keep reading p1 on a different level, so much faster than 918. From Harris to Sutcliffe, well turns out they are flat out wrong. Top gear head to head confirms 918 is a beast, much better car. Car and driver did 60 mph in 2.2 sec, 1/4 mile in 9.8 sec. And p1 was supposed to destroy 918, according to insiders lol. In usual top gear style they do end the review and try to save face for mclaren, p1 is more exciting because its so flawed that it takes time to learn its quirks, its more demanding to drive ect, rubbish. Its the p1 not a lambo diablo. Top gear lap time was a dead heat for p1 and 918. But the way they achieved those times is vastly different. Porsche is smooth, calm and balanced. P1 driver has to be on his toes or an expert just to hang with 918. If the 918 gave p1 a bloody nose, I fear the laferrari will put it in the gutter.

Autocar has done a drag race with P1 and 918. Results should not be shocking. Ferrari did decline as they always do.

Almost 20 MPG... that is nuts. Perfect car.

It is the greatest car of this century it beats everything hands down well done again Mclaren!

My brother hates this car, because it weighs to much and because it has an ugly aerodynamic, which only wants to look cool and stylish, but unlike a race car. Somehow he is right. And of course this fat Sutcliffe guy figures out only the positive aspects of this car.

You really do need to know next to nothing about this car to have that opinion. There is virtually nothing on this car that isn't about aerodynamics. Every curve is doing something practical. Watch the interviews with the lead engineer and realize how ridiculously wrong you and your brother are. This is quite possibly the most aerodynamic car on the road today.

Come on car guys...if your country built anything even close to this, like say the USA, which is whr I was born and raised, you would feel the same way. All Brits should take pride in this historic motor car. He has driven it harder than anyone I've seen up to this point as well..even our beloved Mr. Harris...

I guess it just comes down to preference. The hybrids are all amazing cars and I would be happy just to even see one of these cars in person.

One thing is for sure, you can't hate this car. And it's different from say a Hennessy Venom which is a brute with no refinements. Overall this McLaren does many things well, nice car.

This P1 is nice but if I had the money for a McLaren P1... I'd buy a Pagani Huayra,,Hands down...The greatest automobile ever created, It's an Art work not just a performance.

I don't know why people insist on comparing cars to the Bugatti Veyron. The Veyron is a big, fat, bloated, overhyped car. So it has 1000hp? So what. There are douchebags rolling around in 1200hp Supras. The Veyron has never won anything on any track, anywhere.

The only thing it won was the medal for fastest car in the world… even then Hennessy's Venom GT broke that record but wasn't official since they didn't sell enough to make it a "production car". The P1 is a completely different type of car, and McLaren won me over with the P1 and the F1 from the 90's. If I could pick any super car to own, I'd definitely look towards McLaren. Underrated if you ask me.

The Bugatti veyron deserves the hype, it's hard to believe that the car was produced back in 2005, back then it was a feat in terms of engineering and it still is today. It's never been a track car and many modern day rivals would eat it alive on track. However, it's stood the test of time and it's served as a milestone which pushed the motor industry forwards to develop cars like the P1. The veyron is a true motorcar legend!

+Dunkaccino25 Hennessey also only ran their Lotus in one direction and not the 2 ways required for the record, indicating that they achieved it with a tail wind and their car isn't actually that fast

Wow what a car and great video autocar.

I love the P1 so much. But I also like the 918 & LaFerrari. I genuinely just have an obsession with the rear design of the p1. It's the most jaw dropping rear end design ever. I have yet to see a LaFerrari in person. Hopefully soon so I can compare and contrast. Luckily I've seen 2 P1's & one 918 Spyder.

Sutcliffe, Harris and Metcalfe would make for an awesome car programme

What a machine! I think 12C/650S can't simply compete with 458, but this P1 pushes the limits forward and it's so desirable! Shame it has not a screaming V12 though :)
