Mckenna mausoleum and St Declans cemetery

• McKenna Castle and Mau...
Description from Irish archaeology
One of the earliest monastic sites in Ireland, Ardmore, Co. Waterford was probably founded sometime in the 5th century AD by St. Declan. This early Irish saint was associated with the Déisi Muman people of Waterford and his missionary work amongst them may have pre-dated the activities of St. Patrick. His monastery was built on height over-looking the Irish sea and today it contains a wide range of archaeological features. These include an impressive 12th century round-tower, an early stone oratory, a ruined 12th century cathedral and two inscribed ogham stones of possible 6th century date.
Although containing some earlier fabric, most of the surviving cathedral is 12th century in date and is probably related to work carried out by bishop Moelettrim O Duibh Rathra. One of its more distinctive architectural features is a Romanesque arcade along the cathedral’s western wall, which contains a number of panels depicting biblical scenes. Despite being badly worn in places, some of these images can still be discerned, including Adam and Eve, the Adoration of the Magi, the Archangel Michael weighing souls and the Judgement of Solomon.

The Round Tower
Possibly the most impressive surviving building at the site is the round-tower. Circa 30m tall, this structure originally functioned as a bell tower, as well as being a place of refuge during times of trouble. For extra security the doorway was positioned 4m above ground level and was probably access via a wooden ladder that could be withdrawn inside when needed. The tower has four floors and three small windows along its body, with four more windows located at the very top, one at each of the cardinal points of the compass.

Amazingly beautiful cemetary, touches my heart seeing babies and children taken from their parents, so so sad. I think in the open coffin there were a few bones left, horrible to think their final resting place was desecrated. Thankyou Sue and I think the robin is your guardian angel. xxx

I think I saw something possibly just fragments or matter, I actually seen what I thought was a tooth right inside on its own, like a molar tooth, it breaks my heart reading children and babies who have passed, I find it hard to keep moving after I read their names, I seem to always have a robbing with me lately ❤

I watched a program from the US. where people who restore, repair, and clean* old gravestones for a living were assigned from a young offenders program a set of adolescents to be taught the necessary skiĺls ( mainly cleaning) to restore the markers from an unreadable condition ... it takes about 30/60 to do one and bring it back to the state of ledgibility. Honestly, nothing short of a miracle!! GAVE the participants a valuable sense of achievement and in some instances , the community a tourist attraction. Recovering in others their misplaced History. I say this as it is a SHAME to see these graves vanishing into an unnecessary oblivion. Thanks Sue, I find the lilt in yr accent, calming and not to mention Charming...

Hi, I have said it a million times why do we let our cemeteries and graveyards fall into such a state, I've also mentioned that the unemployed could easily be given a program of at least clearing the over growth we see so many times I've also suggested those doing community service would be of value in this work too and I actually think they might benefit from doing it..its hard in Ireland, we are not allowed touch anything without permission from family, so first you Ave to prove no relatives left then you have to try get permission from the cemetery or historic society, that's even harder. It's a real shame, thanks for your comment

@@SerenitySueGraveyards Serenity Sue ... That indeed sounds in it's entirety a monumental task no slight pun intended ! Certainly more than legislative lobbying, and changes in party policies. A public forum ? With every country it gets back to priority in order of importance. Power and political office can make holders deaf and blind. Im told The Church holds great power in Ireland. As long as everyone does something to keep in the public gaze - it may get the rock moving. What you are doing in your own quiet way may lay the groundwork for gradual change. Rome, as it is said waa not built in a day. Keep it up its not only entertaining, informative, and valuable, it's an exposure of a national treasure to Ireland's children all over the Globe. May the road come up to meet you, with the Sun on your back ... I think that's how it's said...

I don't know what it is about old cemeteries like this, but I find them so peaceful and beautiful. Just as WE now have such tribulations and sorrows in OUR lives, so did many of them, but now, those things are forever past for them. I always imagine most of their spirits in heaven, and so very happy and free, and with the Lord, and it reminds me of the day when most of us now, will also be free from our own tribulations and sorrows, and nothing but joy and peace, for eternity. I guess that's the reason why ancient cemeteries give me such peace, and seem so beautiful. I don't always get the same feeling with many of the graves in newer cemeteries.....and I wonder if it's maybe because I know many modern people today, aren't as good, kind or faithful as they were in times past? But the older ones seem to have a much more peaceful vibe... Perhaps it's because of the people who are buried in them, and who they were, and the goodness in their hearts while in life? I've always wondered about that.

Hi Sue! Thanks for another great explore! That one was absolutely worth the second visit. I remember it from the ogham stone in the church. Coastal cemeteries and churchyards often have grand views because they tend to be located on high ground, and this one is a good example. How they built those round towers I can only guess at. That oratory is a gem, even if the roof isn't original. 🇦🇺 🇮🇪

@@SerenitySueGraveyards The mausoleum looks like it's been broken into several times through the years. I'm guessing that whatever remains were left have been reinterred elsewhere but I could be wrong. Going by the state of the lead lining I'd say someone was very determined to get into - or maybe out of - those coffins. 🦇 🇦🇺 🇮🇪

@@SerenitySueGraveyards I don't know how customary it is to bury people with their valuables. It's a practice I associate with ancient civilizations. I guess wedding and engagement rings would be the most common types of jewellery involved. 🇦🇺 🇮🇪

That was brilliant Sue..so fascinating, and always so much to see with your adventure! I think the small stone erected by The Water Guards, was in memory of lives lost. ( from here) who were drowned in Penzance while on a whaling ship. At least that’s what my eyes read. For my sake I’m glad it wasn’t all written in your native Irish, which beautiful tho it is needs a true Irishman to read and translate then! I’m a member of “Ron’s Gang” in the US, whose graveyard stories and adventures are so good, and he has mentioned your name several times now over previous episodes, so I thought I’d pay you a visit! I havnt been at all disappointed, far from it Sue! And have liked and subscribed to watch you more! Thankyou for the interesting things you find out…you were brave climbing into that old mausoleum last time! And I wasn’t getting a very good feeling from this side of a tv screen even! Do you ever do any paranormal investigations? As that place would be rife I imagine…need plenty of protection and prayers said for those sort of things, which I actually do myself, as I’m also an intuitive medium. With every good wish Sue, Take care, and stay safe in these very uncertain times with covid, omnicom etc…! Love from Helen 🙋‍♀️ in the U.K. 💕💐🙏👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🌹😺xx

So much history and sadness, but serenity and beauty at the same time! Enjoyed this re-visit so much Sue. Gawd...I had an 'optical illusion' at 18:25, just as you turn to the door. I thought it looked like someone standing inside (level with the door frame), holding reddish flowers, with a boy sitting on the little raised wall. Only lasts an eyeblink, so I slowed it right down.
