Alfred McCoy Tyner (born December 11, 1938) is a jazz pianist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, known for his work with the John Coltrane Quartet and a long solo career.
He began studying the piano at age 13 and within two years music had become the focal point in his life. His early influences included Bud Powell, a Philadelphia neighbor. When he was 17, he converted to Islam through the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and changed his name to Sulieman Saud.

This is so respectful of the sheer beauty of the tune - but goes to those places Mr. Tyner can only go - he improvises an odyssey, a rhapsody, a ballade - his ballad solo playing tries to elevate/transcend the tune and open it to a higher spiritual plane -
