REMEMBERING THE LIFE OF ROB BURROW AND HIS TRAGIC DEATH
Burrow died at Pinderfields Hospital from complications of motor neurone disease, on Sunday 2nd of June 2024, aged 41.
His health journey was a courageous battle against mnd, a condition that affects the brain and nerves, causing weakness that worsens over time.
Burrow’s final moments were spent surrounded by his loving family at pinderfields hospital in castleford.
As we honor the life of this legendary individual, we celebrate his humble beginnings and recognize the obstacles he overcame with unwavering resilience. His journey was marked by health challenges, yet he persevered with the steadfast support of his loving family. Additionally, we commend his remarkable achievements in the realm of rugby, showcasing his dedication and talent on and off the field.
In December 2019, just two years after retiring and shortly before his son Jackson's first birthday, Rob was hospitalized due to concerns about slurred speech. Following tests, he and his wife received devastating news in a hospital room that Rob had been diagnosed with MND and would probabaly spend less than two years to live at the age of 37.
According to Lindsay, his on their way back home, her husband was calm & was grateful that it happened to him and not his wife or children. Despite knowing that MND had no cure, Rob vowed to fight fiercely for his life.
The couple faced the difficult task of explaining the harsh reality to their child when asked if their father would die. With courage and honesty, they revealed that there was no cure for the disease.
Rob began raising awareness about the disease to support other patients and raise global awareness. His diagnosis deeply affected the rugby community, prompting his friends to launch fundraising campaigns to assist him and his family.
Kevin Sinfield, Rob's dear friend and former Leeds Rhinos Captain, played a crucial role in supporting him through his challenges. Together with fellow athletes, he coordinated various fundraising events In May, Burrow's wife Lindsey and Kevin Sinfield participated in the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon. They raised an impressive sum of over £15 million for charity in under five years.
Kevin stood by Rob's side throughout his journey, offering unwavering support until the very end.
As the disease progressed, Burrow experienced weakness and paralysis in his muscles, including those used for walking, speaking and swallowing. He underwent various treatments and therapies to manage his symptoms, including speech therapy.
He initially relied on assistive technology for communication as the disease progressed. Initially, he used a device that allowed him to speak through eye gaze technology. This system tracked his eye movements to select letters and words on a screen, which were then converted into speech.
In later stages, Burrow employed a more advanced system that incorporated an AI-generated voice. This voice was created using recordings of his natural speech, allowing him to communicate with his signature Yorkshire accent despite losing his ability to speak.
Unfortunately on Sunday 2nd of June 2024, at age of 41, Rob departed from this world, leaving behind his wife and three children - Macy, Maya, and Jackson. His parents Geoff and Irene Burrow, along with his sisters Rachel and Becky, were devastated by the loss.
