Brilliant grinders. I'm using the Mazzer Super Jolly hopperless too, just pour beans into neck, tamp to weigh down the beans and grind. I use a latte spoon handle, with a slight bend at the end of the handle to get all the grinds from the chute.

It looks very similar in chute design and retention as my Robur. People for some reason always think that there is a massive amount of retention. It is OCD on single dosing at the moment. It is like women's fashion at times I swear. I look at the Eureka grinders and see all the grounds that end up inside the casing on the motor and switches as it is open from the top and even at the portafilter as well as vents for the fan. I wonder how well the Eureka grind mechanism with spindles and all the rest will hold up. The Mazzer design is epic and robust but is taken for granted as it has been around for so long. I guess that is the point, how often do you hear of them falling apart...eventually maybe.

Heya, I'm looking at buying a 2nd hand Mazzer Robur soon. In your expierence what is the grind retention?

The shoot wont clear as well with the opening blocked with a tamper! In normal operation it pumps or blows air that will aid in clearing the shoot. Yes I understand that the hopper also restricts air but there is lots of area that does leak in needed air for the cowel to clear. hold a candle at the out put of the grinder run it with out coffee watch it blow on the flame then plug the neck with your tamper and see the difference.

This is not the actual retention, you basically just swap older stocked grounds with newer. For proper measure you would have to open it and brush everything out and thats your actual retention and be sure to be in the region of 10-15g at least.
