The more videos like these, the better. Sure, there might be some details that are off or are a little misleading, but as long as it interests a few people, you did your job! Yes, any Mazdapseed parts on the FD's are extremely rare. Simply because the company no longer exists. There are a ton, but you covered the more common factory one's that were put into production cars straight away. There is numerous brochures listing all the parts though. The video would take forever.. :-) As for colours, you might never have seen a real yellow mica before. It's actually very gold dusty yellow. So it shines and sparkles in the day just like gold. Where as they had Sunburst yellow which is a standard colour for the Bathurst R edition. That's a non metallic paint. Flat yellow. Same goes with Chaste White and Pearly white. You can tell which one is the metallic one straight away. ;-) Apart from colours, you can get a rare colour on a rare model making the car extremely desirable. While most people would assume that the latest version of the RZ before the Spirit R is the rarest (which it is, considering the model). The rarest last production model of the FD is the Spirit R in Vintage Red. Yes, there are less of those than there are RZ models. :-)

Moral of the story buy an fc because a running fd is far outside of your price range.

As an owner of two in the past 15 years. I learned that the motor wasn’t unreliable, I was just broke. 35yrs old now and done with partying and festivals I finally got myself to bring these back to life. It’s the initial investment to replace every aging part that’s expensive. Especially if you’re trying to remain 100% stock. Switching to a stand-alone ECU made the car much more easy to love. If ya need a rebuild the replacement parts are much stronger than OEM so it’s well worth it. I’d say Maintaining it the same as a Camry except with more oil.

I had a 1994. I think it was an R1 because it had the black alcantara interior. Mine was silver. I took off that hideous spoiler - it looked spectacular! Specs from the factory indicated 0-60 at 4.9 seconds. I think that was a slight exaggeration. However, w/ the supper tight clutch, I absolutely adored that car! Of course, I did not get that ridiculous Bose stereo system. You are quite correct about how ugly all that plastic was. Additionally, it took up A LOT of space. The car listed for $43,000. However, my girlfriend at the time was reading, I think it was Car Driver, and saw an ad, a little small ad in the back listed by a dealer in Virginia, selling these cars for $25,000. How? I don't know. But, I pay $25,000 for that car. A great joy until I wrecked it!

Compression tests are not the be all and end all people. The readings between modules vary, and the compression can also be manipulated by doing things such as adding 2 stroke oil in to the housings before cranking. Rad Potential has a fantastic video explaining this top to bottom.

  • @collinwiedel

Yeah, true but modern testers have a variance of less than a single psi- and if you test your compression hot like you should, there is no real difference than if you premix or not

I guess just watch out for the ones that have the readings presented, go check it yourself to be sure.

Good video but disagree with the rotary not being as reliable as piston engine. I have a Fd and 3 piston cars. On my last video I did a pull and hit 8300rpm with no issues. If I would to do this in my 392, I would still being picking up pieces of my motor on the roadway. N/A rotary engine is as reliable as a piston N/A engine. Also a turbo rotary is as reliable as a turbo piston engine.

@@arrivendrive6831nah. Reliability has nothing to do with rpm and wankels definitely need more care to be as long lasting as any decent piston engine. I’ve put 80,000 trouble free miles on a 100,000mi+ bmw M20 with an added turbo. Have you ever heard of any wankel dealing with that? Mine have both needed rebuilds before 120k, and they were all well cared for cars (FC and FB with an FC engine).

The reason why they stopped selling them in the US was because 1996 was the first year of mandatory ODB2 compliance. Mazda had just put this car into production and would have to completely redo the electrical system to make it ODB2 compliant. The fact that it wasn't selling well was the justification to just pull the model from the US market rather than invest more money into the platform. Once again, the government screws over the car enthusiast.
