I did this on a 2001 Protege ES some time ago. It helps to loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt AFTER removing the alternator and accessory belts as, at least in my situation, the bolt was on very tight. The resistance from the belts helps keep the crankshaft from rotating and they can be clamped to further resist rotation. This is particularly true if you don't have an impact wrench.

Thank you for your video. I watched it many times before shooting my own timing belt and water pump video for the 626. It's almost an identical procedure for the FS Protege and FS 626/MX-6. Only difference is in the ignition system timing procedure (I have a distributor). Excellent video, thank you.

Great video worked like like a charm. When I pulled the belt I just marked everything where it was and noted # of teeth between the gears. Slipped everything back togeather and worked like a charm. Cost about 190$ for the water pump timing belt, tentioner and idler spring and gaskets. Also had to replace the motor mount... THANKS FOR THE VIDEO YOU ALL SAVED ME ABOUT 210$....

yes it can snap at any time. I had a 2000 Protege that i changed at 110k miles but it was because the water pump froze so while we had it apart we changed the belt. Had a 2002 Protege with 200k and the belt snapped going down the highway...luckily the Protege engine is a non-interference engine so it doesn't mess with the valves so you just retime it and your good. We did it on this 2001 Protege at 165k just as preventative maintenance...belt was missing no teeth a little dry rotted.

I'll answer everyone that keeps asking about your cold air intake. No it don't effect the mass airflow sensor. And no it don't hurt the performance of the engine. Actually give you better fuel economy. Now my cold air intake goes all the way down in front of my driver side tire right behind the bumper so I'm getting absolutely no warm air from the engine at all. So I have true cold air intake.

About last year I actually came to ur videos concerning the timing belt change. I changed it fine then it snapped last week again. What is usually the cause of the belt snapping- because it still makes the chirping noise. I loosened the tensioner a little to see if that helps but now it has that awkward sound. Any insight?

Did you bring timing gears to like top dead center or any special marks before making marks on belt? Or Mark belt where gears are when timing cover is off?

I recently replaced my 2001 Protege's water pump belt and we did none of this, all we did was loosen some parts like the alternator to relieve tension and the belts slid right back on. This however, was after the belt snapped.

Hi friend, I have a query what to do about a problem I have with my Mazda Protege '99. He recently left me stranded on the freeway due to a malfunction of the camshaft sensor (CMP). I already bought it and installed it but the engine still does not turn on. My question is if it should be done with a diagnostic computer? Sorry if I have a lack or a strange way of writing, I had to use a translator because I do not speak English.

Righty tighty (clockwise to tighten) , lefty loosey (counter clockwise to loosen), like any normal bolt (aside from early Chrysler lug nuts as I learned on the side of the road, in the mud and rain one night.

I am somewhat mechanically inclined and it took a good day to do it. Im sure a shop would do it in a couple hours but I would plan on most of the day. This was also not my first time doing it. We owned 3 Mazda Proteges at one time.

+John Egan no it does not. In a Honda it does. But with these engines it's driven with the accessory belts. It's much easier to change the water pump now, because the timing belt blocks access to it. No sense going back in to change it later when it's right in front of you.

No you don't ,,you can tie it back and access the water pump..it is a little harder to access , but easier than removing and replacing the belt.

You will need to mark the timing belt as the timing belt turns the water pump. So it will be out of time if you do not mark the belt.
