Great video and I'm going to try this this weekend. I did get in touch with my local Mazda dealer and they said it'll cost £138 (+VAT) just to 'assess' the issue on a ramp! Presumably they'd then want another £200+ to fix it! ...Bonkers!

@@aaanton11 Just to say I did this job this weekend and can't thank you enough for the superb video instructions. I would class myself as a nervous amateur and so pulling apart the car was a bit scary. I needn't have worried, all the panels just lifted off without any problems. I cleaned the area thoroughly, replaced the grommets, sealed everything with a rubber solution, used back-to-black on all the plastic parts, squirted around some oil and Waxoyl and put it all back together no problems. The parts cost me about £15 and so you've saved me in the region of £300! Flippin' marvelous! :) Just as a tip to anyone thinking of doing this. I found it was easy to remove the wipers and this then made removing the larger cowling piece much easier. This allowed really good access to the driver-side grommet.

Thanks very much, our MX5 kept getting condensation and I was blaming the roof. Just had it serviced and they mentioned as an advisory some plug hole needed fixing so I was going to get it done at some point. Then the starter wouldn't work so on checking the interior fuse box the floor was soaking ! I never realised as I don't use that side. Fixed the starter by changing the fuse in the engine compartment and stumbled across this video on this other problem ! I will sort it out. Bad design and not sure why that has not been included as a service item that needs checking and perhaps replacing. I noticed my garage must have looked at this because I now notice after your video they forgot to put the first screw black plastic cover back on. :)

Just done mine this afternoon after a few youtube videos and have to say you video was the most comprehensive and easy to follow. First MX5 only had it 3 weeks and this was the first job I've had to do but your video enabled me to do mine with confidence. I had ordered new ones rather than recycle the old as also came with the scuttle trim covers insets as advised they break easy, clip did break on one so it a good job I did. Thankfully didn't have dry carpet as caught early when spots of water appeared on the rubber mat in the foot well. Have been advised it's a good idea to do the one on the drivers side at the same time as the rubber on that is likely to be just as bad.

I spent an hour this morning looking for the source of the leak in my wife's car, a 2009 model. I couldn't find any faulty seals or any signs of ingress round the doors or roof. So I did a search on the internet and your very helpful video came up. As soon as I looked under the dash on the passenger side I could see signs of rust, and a couple of drips of water confirmed it. Now sorted! Thanks for posting this video :)

Thanks so much for this! I had exactly the same problem, and stumbled upon your video. When I removed the clip, I could see that the foam gasket was completely perished. I ordered a replacement clip and cover from mx5parts as I didn't have any silicone. Took about 30 minutes from beginning to end to get everything sorted. Street parking, so no hairdryer for me, had to take it for a spin with the roof down and heating on full blast into the footwell instead. Dried out nicely either way. It was bucketing it down yesterday, and the passenger footwell was dry as a bone afterwards. Great video, thank you again!

First things to do when buying an older MK3/3.5..... Lift front sill plate & use a decent waterproof mastic around the two fastener clips. Next, the same to the rear high level led brake light housing. Then fetch yourself a trombone cleaner & clean both rain drains. Finally, clean all rubber/foam seals & gummi pfledge (made my sonax) them. 16 yrs of MX5 ownership has taught me a lot about keeping out the rain.

Just finished mopping up the back of ours, left it too long. It made yours look like the sahara. I thought about erecting a "No Diving" sign behind the chair next to the deep end. I'm surprised the bolts did not look like something from the Titanic and were rusted tight. The bottom of the chair was rusty. That switch for the seat heating has always worked plucky thing, must be ex - SAS. I'm going to have to continue drying it tomorrow. January is not the best time for this sort of thing. Wife's birthday on Saturday, we are going to spend some quality time together with some sealant whilst she does the sealing and I give instructions whilst watching your video on the phone. We always argue and then get it done and make up ..... :D Of course the big question is of course ... why does the grommet on the drivers side not do the same ?

Great information on how to do the repair, just slightly concerned about the silicone that you suggest on the link, the Dow 781 is a Acetoxy silicone which can cause metal to corrode!

Well, changed the grommet both sides. Passenger side was easy - seal was broke in two. Drivers side - had to take the drivers side wiper off but managed to change the grommet without having to take the passenger side wiper off. All good - only issue was one of the little black covers snapped. Well tested with a hosepipe - no leaks anywhere.

Same thing I had to deal with. I would highly recommend you completely remove the seat and remove the carpet. Mold will start to grow in 24 hrs so it's very important to get it completely dry. You will have to cut the carpet at the rear of the console where it connects to other side that way you can completely remove the carpet so it will dry.

Very useful video for what should be a routine preventative maintenance on any NC MX-5 over 10 years. Notice that he doesn’t show how to do it on the driver’s side, where both wiper arms must be removed before the cowl trim can be removed. A little more complicated but it’s not a big deal.

Thanks so much for this video. I actually had the problem on the driver's side as well but that scuttle panel looked impossible to remove. I had to bend it up to get to the clip which I then cleaned and bonded back in 👍🏻 However the scuttle panel now isn't quite flush to the windscreen in the corner... will this be an issue? Thanks, Geoff

I am a firm believer in if its not broke, don't fix it, if it was leaking then repair it but there is always a chance of damaging the clip, a trim for a job that didn't need doing, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

Thinking of doing this i have the water in the footwells thought it might have come from the drain holes being blocked at the back ,which I have now cleaned .I am thinking if that was the cause of it but watching this I am thinking that it could be both . Just annoyed with the condensation that I am getting. I will need to get the windscreen replaced before the mot so when I will do I will get the windscreen guy to take off all the bits from the front and at the same time get the plastic bits replaced with new ones and add a little sealant just to be sure. Great video otherwise good tips and advice was thinking of getting a car wet and dry vac but will see what options with a possible heater to dry the inside of the car . Something to work on and think about Also maybe just reseal the boot rear brake light as well as I think that will stop the condensation. I am thinking this could be a good opportunity to check the seatbelts and clean them as this is another issue and maybe check the drain pipe to make sure it hasnt come loose while the seat is out Will keep you updated in a month of two but if any of you guys have any tips always welcomed .

@@aaanton11 Actually, after looking at the other side, it appears that the wiper arms need to be removed. This requires popping off the cap, and then using a metric socket to remove the nut. A little wiggling is necessary to free the arm from the splined shaft.
