Mazda MX30 Team Test | Fifth Gear Recharged

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

It’s Mazda’s first-ever production EV model and they’ve used the MX prefix to note that this should be fun to drive. It also has some funky design features with tiny suicide (backwards) hinged doors influenced by their famous RX-8 coupe. The team find out if Mazda’s first EV attempt is entertaining, and also practical. Watch our brand new series, in full, via Discovery+ www.discoveryplus.co.uk/show/...

    People misjudge this car, it’s a Honda E and MINI rival. When you judge it against premium small rivals it makes much more sense. I really like how it looks because it’s so creative, and it’s lovely inside.

    I have one. Great car and no range anxiety. I just stop after 100 miles and recharge while I have a coffee. No need to rush. The people who this will suit are happy with the shorter range and will love the interior. Best car I’ve had.

    If you use the car like it is intended, wich means daily comute to work, go shopping in nearest town, etc, it's a really nice little car. If you need to stuff in 4-5 people and go on 300 miles roadtripps, not so much. Very happy with our MX-30, as a second car for daily use. We drive usually 40 miles per day with it, sometimes 80, and charge it over night at home.

    And you’re using it exactly as Mazda intended. Obviously, Mazda designed this SUV BEV Coupe for discerning and highly intelligent customers who get it. Guess what? I want one too - it’ll fit my lifestyle perfectly! I don’t think those guys got it at all……🙄

    These chuckle-heads don’t know what they’re looking at. Plato thinks it’s a family hauler and the old top gear guy thinks it’s a road-tripper without the range. It isn’t for couples that have adult-sized children who still live at home and need to be driven everywhere. It’s, in fact, the perfect commuter car for most people and it meets the needs of the majority of daily drivers.

    The MX-30 was not designed to be a pure EV. Mazda themselves said before the launch of this car that they do not believe current EV technology is green enough nor ready for the general consumer. This exact is available as a PHEV in Japan, with a 2.0 engine combined with a larger battery for 50km of EV range. That is a much better powertrain for this car, and it's no wonder that the MX-30 is a poor EV when the company itself didn't want to make one.

  • @aaaa-ig6sc

    @aaaa-ig6sc

    2 жыл бұрын

    I don't know if they actually said that or you're filling in the dots. Phillipe Geffroy (Mazda France) just said there was no pressure coming from their customers for alternative fuel vehicles. But yes they have shown no real interest so far and burying their head in the grounds like Toyota (Toyota own a portion of Mazda funny enough), and will be stuck in the next decade as everyone starts moving to EV. Will Mazda exist in the future? Shame to see it go. My opinion on the MX-30 BEV is it's ugly, impractical, with a very short range. Only those with a second vehicle might consider it for city use, but with the likes of MGZS why would you choose it at the same price point. Those wheel arches 🤣

  • @ymtzlgn

    @ymtzlgn

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@aaaa-ig6sc I may be in the minority who thinks that the MX-30 actually looks quite good, but at that price point it makes no sense at all. There are much better alternative BEVs out there. If Toyota does take Mazda fully on board, then it might has a place as a semi-sporting brand between Toyota and Lexus. Mazda recently started making a premium push and judging by the CX-30 it has a much better interior than the equivalent Volkswagen or Ford. But you are right their future is definitely uncertain, especially considering their recent (and pathetic) move to rebadge the Toyota Yaris as the Mazda2

    Think of it not as a 4/5 door car but a 2/3 door car with easier access to the rear seats. Think of it as a "premium second car" for commuting and shopping. I rarely do more than 15 to 30 miles so the real world 100 mile range is fine. On the very rare occasion that my journey takes me beyond the range, I find a charger near a decent coffee shop and have a break while I add miles back into the battery. At my age (mid 60s) nothing is worth rushing for and if I were driving an ICE vehicle, I'd still stop for that coffee and break, so it would make little difference. I love the looks. I like the interior. But (for what is essentially a more 'premium' style EV) I especially like the lower price that having a smaller battery allows. I normally like the Fifth Gear reviews, but on this occasion they have completely misunderstood the car.

This is the BEV I want - a unique Japanese SUV Coupe with a premium interior and adequate for my lifestyle, battery size. I’m disappointed at how those guys didn’t understand what they were reviewing at all………🤨🤔

    Great video as always. I was thinking about the rear doors - perhaps there's a positive way to look at them: it's like having a 3-door car, only better? Rather than a 4-door but worse? i.e as a front seat passenger, you don't have to get out of the car and pull the seat forward - all you have to do is open the front door. I have this horrible cringe-ing feeling though about someone slamming the front door shut on the closed rear door! 😬

    In Canada (Quebec), the price for a 2023 MX-30 GS is 44,500$ + taxes. After that, you take 12,000$ off the price (credit from provincial & federal governments) and then, another 4,000$ off the price (Mazda rebate). So the final price is 35,100$ taxes included. Yes it has a lower range than the others in the same class (Kona, Soul, Bolt, Leaf etc...) but also has a lower price. I won't use the car in winter time as my wife has an AWD vehicle. I rarely drive more than 80 km/day (running errands) and will be using it from may 01 to october 31. BTW, I've done more than 180 km with 15% left. I must say that I'm a pretty smooth driver and I drive usually no more than 10-15 km/h over the posted speed limit. 😁 If it was my only vehicle, I would have bought a Bolt EUV with 460 km range (more than 12 months for delivery) !!! 😕

    I'd just wait for the electric Dacia to arrive for £15k, that being said I will keep driving my Alfa 159 2.4 Sportwagon until it dies or they stop selling diesel. Like many in the UK I have no access to home charger due to property type so would have to rely on fast chargers which sort of defeats to object when it comes to fuel/charging cost. So unless I win the lottery to afford a home with private drive for a charger, electric cars just won't work for me.
